Bourn School Supports Charities in the UK and Across the World
Build Africa
For the past two years, we have supported a charity called Build Africa, and each of our Houses has raised money to support one of four Child Ambassadors through this scheme.
Build Africa is an African education charity which believes in the power of education to help to end poverty. They work to give children the education they need and fight the inequalities that stand in their way, partnering with remote and rural communities where children are leaving school without vital basic skills.
Sadly, this scheme is no longer operating, so the children will vote in early September to decide which charity to support which will support people in different countries to have a better life.
Lisa Kent Trust
As a school we also have links with the Lisa Kent Trust, which is a local charity run from Elsworth dedicated to giving children in The Republic of The Gambia the education that they deserve. We have already sent a large number of learning books to a school in The Gambia as a gift and we hope to do more. Our donation was mentioned in their newsletter here.
Local Food Banks
Our harvest festival donations are taken to one of the local Food Banks, supporting people locally who do not have enough food to eat. At the start of the first lockdown, when food was in short supply in the shops, we also held an impromptu food bank donation and donated a large amount of food to the Trussell Trust Foodbank based at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Arbury, Cambridge. This was featured on the BBC Look East lunchtime news that day.
Our excess produce from our allotments was also donated to the wider community via the Cambridge Botanic Gardens ‘Grow a Row’ scheme, which encourages schools to share surplus fruit and vegetable produce.
Comic Relief and Sports Relief
Every year, we take part in activities to raise money for these worthwhile charities.
We are all looking forward to being able to fundraise more actively in 2021/22 as we will be able to mix bubbles and spend more time together as Houses, coming up with amazing ideas to raise money.
