What we have been learning this week...

This week has been International Week so we have had lots of additional exciting lessons and events!
We learnt about Mexico, its geographical features, food and festivals. We focused on 'El Dia de los Muertos' - the Day of the Dead and created some crafts related to this special occasion. We made moveable skeletons and decorated 'las calaveras' - paper skulls embellished with flowers and patterns. We learnt about India with a very informative presentation and read the story of Ganesh. We used this as inspiration to design mini 3D elephants, decorated with Indian-inspired designs and patterns. We learnt some key facts about Sweden and the children carried out some  research so that they could produce some information leaflets as a travel guide. They have also created some art work based on Scandinavian folk art which looks fantastic! We enjoyed a presentation by Delilah on New Zealand, and tasted some New Zealand sweets. The children also created a fact file on South Africa and made some Ndebele art work, which is based on colourful geometric patterns and used to decorate many different items from buildings to fabric and beadwork.

Activities we enjoyed this week...

We really enjoyed the presentation about India by Sheethal and Archana. They shared so much interesting information and taught us a great deal including some words in Punjabi! We enjoyed creating our mini elephants too!

We also really enjoyed the Bring and Share evening on Tuesday where everyone had a wonderful time enjoying whole variety of tasty food and drinks from different countries very kindly cooked and provided by parents.

What we have been learning this week...

This week has been Children's Mental Health Week. We had some really interesting discussions about how to keep yourself physically and mentally healthy. We talked in detail about the theme of this week: 'My Voice Matters' and how important it is to be able to express your likes, dislikes, opinions, concerns and worries. We completed a fun activity where we wrote down key facts about ourselves. We read them out and had to guess who the factfile belonged to...it turns out we know each other very well indeed! In English, we completed some persuasive writing based on 'The Highwayman'. We used the AFOREST features to add persuasion to our texts. In Art, we completed our unit on Islamic Art by answering some key questions and completing complex Islamic geometric patterns on squared paper. In Maths, the children have been learning how to multiply fractions by an integer and how to use this as an operation when solving word problems. They are beginning to see the link between multiplying a fraction being the same as dividing by the denominator.  In PSHE, the children learned about the cultural influences of other countries. We looked at what different foods, music and sports we now have that originated from other countries and learned about global trade.

Activities we enjoyed this week...

In RE, we are learning about Hinduism and the pathway to Moksha. Today, we studied the pathway of devotional love to God called Bhakti and watched some very interesting videos about how Hindu people worship.

We also enjoyed our Geography lessons where we found about trade and industry in South America. We enjoyed looking at products and finding out their countries of origin as well as mapping South American export products on a map and talking about trade routes and transport.

How you can help...

Please encourage your child to complete homework on time. If there are any problems, encourage them to bring it in early and talk to us so that we can help them complete it.

Please encourage your child to read every night and to practise their spellings regularly throughout the week. Thank you.

What we have been learning this week...

This week, in English, we have revised similes and metaphors and how to use these to extend description. We then completed some amazing narrative writing based on 'The Highwayman' and created diary entries for Tim the Ostler describing his love for Bess. The children did an excellent job of choosing ambitious vocabulary and employing figurative language to great effect. In Geography, we continued with our studies of South America and the Amazon. We explored the different layers of the rainforest and watched an incredible virtual reality video showing a 360 view of the rainforest and river. In Maths, we have been learning how to add fractions, and multiplying fractions and mixed numbers by a whole number (integer). We have also revisited multiplication and division word problems to reinforce calculation skills. In Music, we looked at the composer Philip Glass and listened to several of his film scores and 'Music in Eight Parts'. We recorded what the music made us think of and our reactions to each piece. In Science, we carried out an experiment to see which metal has the most resistance when conducting, testing gold, silver, copper, nickel and steel.

Activities we enjoyed this week...

We enjoyed our narrative writing work on 'The Highwayman':

What we have been learning this week...

This week, in Art, we continued our studies of Islamic Art by exploring arabesque art. We learnt that this art form is made up of three key features: symmetry, spirals and balance. Arabesque art is made up of Rumi motifs - we practised drawing these, interlinking and extending them to form intricate patterns.  In Science we carried out an experiment to investigate the best type of material to act as an insulator. The children tested 4 or 5 different materials and regularly took the temperature of the ice cube inside the materials to measure the rate of it melting.
In maths, the children applied their division column methods to solve a range of problems. They are very confident in using column method for multiplication and division now. In RE, we have been looking at examples of dilemmas in Hindu narratives.
We also spent time rehearsing our Assembly this week. We really hope you enjoyed hearing us perform some of our songs from Young Voices. We certainly enjoyed performing them!

What we enjoyed this week...

In Geography, we continued our unit on South America by looking at human geographical features and sorted information for each South America country using additional data and statistics. We also explored the Amazon rainforest, completing our own research into the weird and wonderful animals that live there!

What we have been learning this week...

What a busy week we've had! In English, we have continued our study of 'The Highwayman' by analysing the main characters. We explored the relationships between them and then used the text to glean and infer information on the protagonists' appearance and personalities. In Geography, we have continued our study of South America by looking at the animals of the Amazon Rainforest. We then completed our own research to create fact files for an Amazon animal of our choice. In Art, we learnt about Girih tiles and how 5 geometric shapes are used to create intricate patterns. We then recreated these using paper tiles and created repetitive patterns in Girih style. In the lesson, we used an online tessellation programme and some children were keen to try this at home. Here is the link for any budding artists: https://girihdesigner.com/editor.html  In Maths, the children have moved seamlessly onto multiplying 3 digits by 2 digits the formal written method. They have applied this to some problem solving and we have also been learning about the relationship between division and fractions and had a fun time today playing Battleships!

What we enjoyed this week...

We REALLY enjoyed our visit to the O2 this week for our Young Voices concert! After months of rehearsing, we were so excited to participate in this amazing event and it didn't disappoint: 8,000 children, talented live acts, fabulous musicians, amazing singing and an appreciative audience in an awesome setting! We all had such a fantastic time and created lifetime memories. Thank you SO much to Mrs Collins and Mrs Davidson whose help was invaluable. Thanks also to parents who attended who we were able to excitedly wave to after Mrs Davidson managed to spot them across the massive arena!

What we have been learning this week...

Wishing you all a Happy New Year! We have been very busy since our return to school starting our new units of work. In English, we have been working on the poem, 'The HIghwayman' by Alfred Noyes. We have explored the archaic language within the poem and have spent time making sure we understand the narrative by watching animations and re-reading the text several times. So far, we have analysed the use of colour within the poem, learnt new vocabulary and used the text as the basis for some drama. In Geography, our new unit is based on a study of South America. We have done lots of map work looking at the different countries within this continent, explored physical and human features, key landmarks and climate. In Art, we have started our new unit on Islamic Art. In our first lesson, we looked at the key components of this: calligraphy, architecture, textiles, geometric and arabesque shapes. We started the unit by created a symmetrical and geometric pattern using a limited palette. In Maths this week, we have been learning about long multiplication. This is new for many of the children and is complicated in that it involved many steps in calculation and understanding how to lay it out. In Science we started out new unit of work on materials. The children enjoyed testing the properties of a variety of materials in order to compare them and can use scientific vocabulary to describe the properties and how they're suited for different purposes

What we enjoyed this week...

We enjoyed representing some key scenes from 'The Highwayman' through freeze-frames. Can you guess which part of the poem we are representing?

We also enjoyed developing our knowledge of South America with map work and creating climate graphs:
