International Week

We are really excited about International Week next week! Each day, children will learn about one of 5 countries: Sweden, China, India, Mexico and  South Africa and will take part in a range of activities. There will be visitors to classes across the week who will talk to children about lots of different countries.

On Tuesday from 6 - 7.30pm we are holding a Bring and Share evening where many families are generously preparing and bringing in food from lots of different countries and cultures.  Please do join us for an interesting and tasty evening!

On Wednesday every class will take part in a Chinese Dragon Dance workshop, which takes place at the start of the 2024 Lunar New Year.

On Friday at 2pm, we are holding a concert, where lots of children and parents will sing, dance, play music and read poems from cultures and countries around the world. Parents are welcome to attend.

Great Books That Also Help Develop Empathy

Empathy Lab have just released their 2024 collection of children's books which includes picture books, novels, poetry, non-fiction, graphic and verse novels.  Each book offers young people different ways of experiencing, understanding and building empathy. Several explore the world’s big empathy issues, including war, climate change and the refugee crisis. Others help children understand different cultures and identities, name and share their emotions and gain insight into challenging life circumstances, such as being disabled or having a stammer.

Have a look at their recommendations for Primary school children here.

Friendship Games

Ten children from Year 5 and 6 took part on the Friendship Games which were held yesterday at Cambourne Village College. They took part in different sports and activities and had an opportunity to meet children from different schools.  A good time was had by all!

International Week

We are still looking for people to contribute to the bring and share evening. Any food can be contributed - food from different regions of the UK as well as from other countries. Please let Mrs Wheatman know if you can help. The more food we have, the better the evening will be!

It's not too late to put yourself or your child forward for the concert! Please let me know if you'd like to be involved. More information about the timing will be sent out once I know how many 'acts' there will be, but it will be towards the end of the school day.

Measles Outbreak

The following is an extract from the letter from the Director of Public Health sent out earlier this week to all families:

You may have seen in the news, the West Midlands is currently experiencing a large outbreak of measles with a rapid rise in cases. UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has therefore declared a national incident.

The Community and School Age Immunisation Service is running walk-in vaccination clinics for children who are not up to date with their MMR vaccinations. Details of upcoming clinics can be found here: https://www.cpics.org.uk/measles  Please check your child’s vaccination status before attending one of these clinics.

f your child is identified as a close contact of a measles case and they do not have satisfactory vaccination status, they may be asked to self-isolate for up to 21 days, during which they will not be able to attend school or childcare. Children who are fully vaccinated do not need to be excluded from school or childcare. If a child catches measles they will probably feel quite poorly and be off school for around 10 days. Vaccination can help keep your child in school.

During the day, each class had hot chocolate and there was a cake sale at the end of the day. All money raised will be donated tot he Marine Conservation Charity, which is close to the hearts of all the house captains.

Thank you to everyone who helped with this day, and especially Ava and Ben!

Free School Meals

The following message is from Aspens:

When pupils transition from year 2 to year 3, we want to make sure your child still enjoys a school meal every day even though Universal Free School Meals stop. 🍱🥦

There are numerous benefits to choosing a school meal. Not only do they provide essential nutrition, but they also offer great value for money and the perfect serving of brain fuel to support your child's learning journey. 📚💡

Did you know that your child could still be eligible for Free School Meals? You can easily check their eligibility by visiting: https://www.gov.uk/apply-free-school-meals

We are still looking for parents/families to contribute to the Bring and Share International food evening on the 13th; and for parents to come in and talk to children about a country they have a close connection with. Seacole Day

On Friday 2nd February it is Seacole Day. Children can come to school in their pyjamas or other cosy clothes. This is to raise money for the House Captain's Charity and we would be very grateful for £1 donation which can be made on MCAS.

Children will also be having a drink of hot chocolate during the day and there will be a cake sale after school, in the hall. If you would like to bake something for this, please bring it to the office on the morning of the 2nd February.

Covid Questions

We have been asked by a number of parents what the current guidance is for Covid.

As COVID-19 presents a low risk to children and young people, combined with high vaccination rates in the population, there are no longer specific rules relating to it in schools, colleges and other education settings.

Children and young people with mild symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough, who are otherwise well, can continue to go to school, college or childcare.

However, those who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people where they can. They can go back to school, college or childcare, and resume normal activities when they no longer have a high temperature, and they are well enough to attend.

Young Voices at the O2

Rosewood Class joined over 8,000 other children at the O2 Arena last night for the opportunity to perform in one of the world's greatest arenas and alongside some incredible artists! It was a very long day, with children not returning until nearly midnight, but they loved every minute of the day, and especially the performance.

Parents were able to attend and were blown away by the experience - as one parent said.

"Wow! We were not sure what to expect, but it certainly was not what we were treated to last night! It was fantastic, so thank you. Such a great experience for the children to be part of it all, and something I have no doubt they will remember for a long time."

Thank you to Mrs Culley, Mrs Wheatman and Mrs Collins for organising and staying up so late, and also to Jo as our parent helper.

Community Challenge!

Today in Collective Worship, each class shared what they are doing for their community challenge. Part of our school vision is to 'make the world a better place' and this is what we are aiming to do. More information is on the Class pages, and classes will be sending letters home so you know how you can help.

Acorn and Willow will be supporting the charity, Sal's Shoes, which collects pairs of pre-loved shoes and donates them to children in over 61 countries, including the UK. There is a shoe collection point in the front entrance.

Hazel will be 'greening' the environment, including the school building, with more plants.

Cedar are making links with local care homes so they can befriend elderly people and spend time with them.

Rosewood are becoming Litter Leaders and will be doing litter picking in school and the local community, including the rec in Bourn

Cherry are working on improving road safety around the school. They have already made contact with the Parish Council and we will soon have new signs around the school entrance.

Oak are focusing on developing their own first aid skills and providing first aid kits for others.

In undertaking these Community Challenges, we are particularly demonstrating the Bourn values of friendship, courage and justice.

Parking

The County Council have asked us to pass this information on to parents.

Parking enforcement changes – please think about where you park

From 1 February anyone parking on restrictions such as double yellow lines or zig zag lines near the school are far more likely to receive a parking ticket than before.

Cambridgeshire County Council was given Civil Parking Enforcement powers by the Government late last year and are doing a final push with South Cambridgeshire District Council to remind people of the change before tickets, with fines attached, begin to be issued by Civil Parking Enforcement Officers.

The safety of pupils and everyone in and around the school is really important and inconsiderate parking can make it more dangerous for people. Please use this change as an additional reminder to think about where you park.

In the past only the Police could issue tickets for illegal parking, but the changes mean it is now a civil matter and Council Civil Parking Enforcement Officers can issue the tickets for some matters.

For more details about Civil Parking Enforcement please visit Cambridgeshire County Council’s Civil Parking Enforcement page of its website.

Christmas Dinner

We really enjoyed our Christmas Dinner today! thanks to Jules and the Aspens Team for cooking such a delicious meal. The children pulled crackers and danced along to favourite Christmas songs! A great time was had by all!

Aspens had an additional member of staff helping in the kitchen today and Aspens sent us this feedback which they received from her,

"She has been in school catering for 20 odd years, and she said it was honestly one of the best lunches she's been to!  She said the food was good, but more than that, I think she felt the atmosphere of the school and the excitement of the children and the involvement of the staff just made it so special!"

 Panto!

The children enjoyed an online panto of Puss in Boots today!  They were a very enthusiastic audience!

 Merry Christmas!

Hazel and Willow Play

The children in Hazel and Willow class put on their performance of 'Hay You!' to the school on Tuesday, and then to parents on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening. Their singing and dancing was enthusiastic and joyful and it was a pleasure to watch!

Huge thanks to all the staff who were involved in producing and co-ordinating the play, which with two classes and 60 children is no mean feat! Thanks to Miss Grist, Mr Lennon, Mrs Vajzovic, Mrs Ford, Miss McCollum, Miss Sturman and Mrs Lauria.

Christmas Service

The whole school walked up to the Church this morning for our Carol Service, led by Revd Nigel, and we were joined by lots of parents. The orchestra played the carols, children read the nativity story and the choir also sang.

It was a lovely service and the children's singing was beautiful.

Thank you to parents who walked with the children to and from church.

 Online Safety Newsletter

This week’s online safety parents/carers guide, produced by National Online Safety as part of their #WakeUpWednesday campaign guide provides you with 12 top tips for how your children can enjoy a tech-free Christmas.

Year 5 Traffic Monitors

This week, Robbie, David and Albert were our Traffic Monitors. They would like to remind everyone to look both ways when crossing the roads.

Attendance

You may know that there is a big focus from the government on school attendance, with every day of school missed, whatever the reason, impacting on attainment. From the start of next term, we will email all parents their child's attendance half termly showing year to date attendance, which will give you the information that we use to monitor this. More information will follow in the new year.

 Acorn Nativity

Acorn class performed their Christmas play 'Whoops A Daisy Angel' to the school on Tuesday and to parents and family on Wednesday this week. The children sang and danced brilliantly which was all the more impressive as they have only been in school for just over 3 months!

Well done especially to Mrs Monks, Miss Simmons and Mrs Crome for all their hard work which made this such a special event.

Carols at Merribourn

The choir visited Merribourn Club yesterday at the Community Centre in Bourn. They sang Christmas songs and everyone joined in with the 12 Days of Christmas! The residents who came very much enjoyed the children's singing and we have already agreed to more visits in the future!

Christmas Dinner

It is Christmas dinner at school next Tuesday. Children can 'dress for dinner' - it could be party clothes, Christmas jumpers or other festive wear!

Can You Help Acorn Class?

After Christmas, Acorn Class will be learning about the different jobs that people do, as part of their 'People who help us ' topic. We'd love to bring this learning alive by having visitors come and talk to the children about their jobs. If you think you'd like to do this please can you let Mrs Monks know.

Lost Property Prevention

PLEASE label your child's clothes, bags and lunchboxes. Children regularly leave their things lying about, but we quickly reunite them when the things are named. We really want to avoid the huge pile of unnamed clothes we ended up with at the end of last year. Biro or Sharpies work well for writing names on labels. We may write your child's name on the label of unnamed clothes.

Staffing Changes

Mr Lennon (Willow Class teacher) will sadly be leaving at the end of this term for a post in a school much closer to home. We will miss him but wish him all the best for his new job (and much shorter journey!)

We have appointed Mrs Kirsty Hawkins who we are pleased to welcome to the staff team at Bourn. She will be teaching in Willow class with Mrs Vajzovic from the start of next term.

Christmas Capers

Christmas Capers was a huge success, with something for everyone to enjoy, from Santa's Grotto to a scented candle stall. Well done to the Year 6 children whose stalls were particularly popular!

Thank you to everyone in the BSA who organised the event and to all the other parents who helped in any way, from serving refreshments, putting together the hampers and running a stall - and much much more!

It was a lovely event and a great kick start to the festive season!

 Online Safety Newsletter

This week’s online safety parents/carers guide, produced by National Online Safety as part of their #WakeUpWednesday campaign is all about Disney +.

Christmas Decoration Day

This week, all the children spent time making Christmas decorations and cards. They had to apply lots of different skills, as well as patience and perseverance, and what they produced was very high quality! The papercrafts below are from year 4 and year 5.

Our Giraffe

Our giraffe, named Hope, is now off on her travels as she has gone to meet her other giraffe friends before being displayed in Cambridge next year.

The design of the giraffe was taken from the ideas that children submitted. The most common themes of our values, our House names, music, our class trees and butterflies were all included. We also took inspiration from the flowers and leaves from the stained glass by the office. Children in Rosewood class in particular wanted to remember their friend Lyla, so there is also a purple heart on the design.

All the children contributed to the painting, but the design and details were pulled together by Miss Nutland. I am sure you will all agree they all did a fantastic job!

 Hope, Our Giraffe!

 Online Safety Newsletter

This week’s online safety parents/carers guide, produced by National Online Safety as part of their #WakeUpWednesday campaign is all about the Online Safety Act, which was passed into law in October 2023. The aim of this important Act is to establish new layers of protection from children when they are online.

School Start Time

A reminder to parents that the school day officially starts at 8.50am when the register is taken. If children arrive at the gate at 8.50am, they are already late for the register by the time they get to the classroom.

As the children arrive in the morning, they complete morning work, which is core English and maths skills. This is also the time when children in KS2 take AR tests.

Children who get to the classroom after the register starts are missing nearly an hour's worth of core skills practice each week.

Cosy Clothes Day

Every now and again we have a Cosy Clothes Day just because... Next Friday is our first Cosy Clothes Day of this winter. Children can come in whatever clothes that make them feel nice and cosy!

 Book Bus After School Session

The Book Bus will be open after school on Wednesday 6th next week.  Please do drop in for a browse, to borrow books or just to read a story to your child. Thank you to Simone and Heath for running these sessions.

Year 5 Traffic Monitors

This week, Lucy, Tilly and Jadon have been on duty. They want to remind everyone to look both ways when crossing the road, as cars sometimes do come from both directions.

Please also ensure that you do not park over anyone's drive as we have been contacted again by neighbours who have been blocked in.

There was also the sad news that a cat was run over and killed during the morning school run this week. Please do take extra care to drive really slowly around the roads near school.

Thank you.

Music Concert

This week, parents, friends and families were treated to a music concert, complete with tea and delicious home made mince pies (courtesy of Jules from Aspens!) Performing were the orchestra, the school choir and many individual children who played the instruments they learn. The standard of performances  was excellent and the children and audience clearly enjoyed themselves very much.

This was the first public performance of the new school choir, who sang beautifully. Jo Davidson has done an amazing job in teaching the choir to perform at such a high standard in less than a term!

I would also like to especially mention Mrs Verwoerd for the incredible work she does with the orchestra. There are over 40 children involved and she manages to inspire and co-ordinate all of them so that they produce an excellent standard of playing. I am sure you will all join me in thanking her for everything she does to make the music provision at school so impressive.

Happy Diwali

Diwali is a major festival celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and the start of new beginnings for millions of people of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths. This year, the main day of celebration is on this Sunday. We were very lucky to have some parents visit the school today to talk to children in Acorn and Rosewood about Diwali. Thank you so much!

Children in Acorn each had a sparkler, which they loved!

Childhood vaccination rates have fallen over the past ten years and this week statistics show that over 102,000 children aged four and five years old starting in reception are not protected against catching measles, mumps and rubella. Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in a classroom can catch the disease if just one child is infectious. If you are unsure if you or your child are up to date, check your child's red book or GP records and make an appointment to catch up any missed doses. "We don't like it when people don't follow the rules because it's dangerous for kids. Someone could get hurt. On Thursday, there were lots of people who didn't obey the rules - some cars parked in the bus area and some parents and children crossed behind the bus when it was reversing, which isn't safe."

Please remember to cross between the blue cones. Thank you.

 House Captains

We are very proud of all the children who put themselves forward for election. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of the whole school and say why they would make the best House Captain - even more so when there can only be 2 Captains in each house.

 Developing Empathy

This week, in Collective Worship, we read the book, Something Else, by Kathyrn Cave and Chris Riddell. It is all about a creature that was rejected by others because he wasn't like them. we asked the children to think how he felt when he was rejected, and how they would feel if they were in his shoes.

You can watch a video of the story being read here.

Year 5 Traffic Monitors

This week, Iris and Lewis have been on duty. They have reminded people to cross the road between the blue cones where it is safest.

PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS BAY, ON DOUBLE YELLOW LINES OR ON THE YELLOW ZIG ZAGS. This makes the roads unsafe and puts children at risk.

If You Have a Concern

From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.

Absence Reporting

If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email

absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.

Please remember to cancel any pre- ordered lunches if your child is off sick or you may be charged by Aspens for it.

 Contact Details

It is really important that we have more than one phone number we can ring if your child is ill at school. Please can you check your details on the MCAS app and check the numbers are up to date and there are back up numbers if the priority number is unavailable. Thank you.

NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL

A reminder that we have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: peanuts, sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, almonds, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.

 The School Day

The school gates open at 8.35am. Morning Registration is at 8.50am and the school day finishes at 3.05pm.

Bourn Community Challenge

Over the next week, children in each class will be deciding what their 'Community Challenge' for this year will be. The aim of this is to make the world around us a better place for other people, wildlife or the environment. This could be the school, the local area or further afield.  Each class will work on their Challenge over the year and will give regular updates. We want the whole school community to be engaged so please do talk to your children about what ideas they have and maybe add some of your own! We will share the Challenges for each class once they have been finalised - watch this space.

You can find further information about What's New this year by clicking below. These are slides from the Welcome to the year Ahead presentation.

Gardening Club

The new Gardening Club have started the year by harvesting the potatoes and onions planted last year. They were very pleased to deliver these to the kitchen for them to use!

 Phonics Workshop

On 28 September from 6-7pm, we will be holding a Phonics information evening, to introduce parents to our new Phonics Scheme, Little Wandle. There are quite a few changes to how we teach and when books will be coming home, so please do try to attend if your child is in Acorn, Willow or Hazel classes. All other parents are also welcome to attend. Please book a place here:

Please remember to support your child in returning books borrowed as they will not be able to take a new book out if one is still outstanding.

Each class has a session on the Book Bus every 2 weeks (alternated with a Nature reserve session).

Online Safety Newsletter

This week’s newsletter is all about online financial scams and exploitation and it a very useful explanation of all the ways in which people attend to defraud people online through phishing scams, identity theft, deceptive advertising, social media scams. It also gives parents advice on how to support your child in identifying these too.

Mr French is currently servicing all the bikes to make sure they are safe! Children in Year 5 and 6 will be doing cycling first - please remind your child to bring in their helmet!

CB23 Schools Careers Convention

The Network BC23 Schools run a highly successful Careers Convention for Year 5 pupils (and year 6 pupils this year) in all of the primary schools in Network CB 23 and it is held at The Great Barn in Bourn!

The aim of the day is to introduce the children to a wide range of career options and help them to make connections between learning and “working life” whilst still at primary school. We hope that by doing so, we will inspire them to value learning, open their minds to new possibilities and help them raise their own ambitions.

The organiser is looking for new exhibitors for this year’s convention. They are keen to have a wide range of careers and jobs; from Accountants to Zoologist, Bakers to Yoga instructors, Lawyers to Engineers, pilots, TV engineers, photographers, HGV drivers to Surveyors and everyone in between.

If you can help or know of someone who would be perfect, then please contact Jill Foster at the email address below and she can provide more details and an exhibitor’s form. Information about the event in previous years is on the Network CB23 website.  www.networkcb23.com/careers-convention.html

Traffic and Parking

Yesterday there was a serious situation whereby a fire engine was stuck as a result of inconsiderate parking. The outcome of this could have been disastrous.

I am asking all parents, again, to think about the safety of others when you park. Do not park in the following places, even if you are late or there are no other places nearby to park:

- in or behind the bus bay

- on double yellow or yellow zig zag lines

- across people's driveways (even slightly)

- where there is a dropped kerb

- the private road up to the residential garages

-on corners

Please do let the school know if you see parking on these areas, so we can remind individuals as necessary.

Parents are encouraged to park at the Manor Barn car park and walk from there. It's only a short walk and the fewer cars we have around school the safer it is for everyone, especially your children.

If You Have a Concern

From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.

Message from Parents' School Preference Adviser

My name is Tiff Christian and I am the Parents' School Preference Adviser for Cambridgeshire, as part of the SENDIASS team. I have recently been appointed after a long period of vacancy and would like to introduce myself to you and your families.

The service offers families advice and support when applying for schools, either when admissions open for transition on the 11th September 2023 or for in-year applications. I am able to advise how the transfer and admissions process works, as well as supporting the understanding of policies and criteria for different schools. Also, I can support in the appeals process and issues concerning transport.
