Bourn to Run 2025

This year’s Bourn to Run has raised an incredible £12,500 for Bourn Primary Academy. This is the biggest fundraising total ever. These funds are so vital in ensuring that school is able to offer the provision that it currently can.

My sincere thanks go to the dedicated team that organise the event before the day, on the day and after the event has taken place.

Thank you also to the sponsors -  Bourn Quarter, Mortimer/RE, Bourn Airfield Development, The Outdoors Project, Bourn Hall, Cambridge Design Partnership, Lalbagh, Studio Fogg, One Body Physiotherapy and Hay & Rice for supporting and contributing to the event.

I would also like to thank everyone who was able to come on the day and support the event, both the runners and spectators alike. It really is a tremendous event and so crucial to school.

Safeguarding

Miss Hensleigh has recently undertaken her Safeguarding Lead training. This means that the Safeguarding team in school comprises of me as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) with Mrs Wheatman and Miss Hensleigh being Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DDSL)

Around school

The children have settled back into school after the half term break incredibly well this week and it has been lovely to hear all about what they have been doing during the holiday. We have also noticed that we are having fewer children arriving late into school - thank you for your support with this. The early morning work that the staff plan for the children really does add to their learning and so being in school for this helps with the children's academic progress and understanding of the topics that we are looking at in school.

Also - I just wanted to remind everyone that our wonderful Book Bus is open from 3:15pm every Thursday. Please do make use of this excellent facility.

Parent Consultations

Thank you to everyone who attended the Parent Consultation sessions this week. I trust that you found these sessions useful and informative. We really do value all of your support and the Parent Consultation process is an excellent way of communicating to you how your child is doing in school.

Gardening Club

Our Gardening club have recently been very busy making these pine cone bird feeders. I am sure you will agree that they are most impressive.

Safeguarding

Should you have any concerns in relation to an adult or child's welfare whilst school is closed for the Half Term please can I ask that you follow the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Partnership Board advice which can be found here.

Around school

This week I have been most impressed by the children and their mathematical vocabulary. I can see how the children have been working diligently on learning new mathematical vocabulary and then applying it to their learning.

Our writing development journey can also be seen from my lesson visits and the children's ability to speak about their prior learning and how they are building on it in the lessons is impressive.

Autumn 1 Reflection

As we draw to a close on the first Half Term of this academic year I just wanted to share with you all a few reflections. Bourn Primary Academy is clearly a very special place to be. We have an effective Governing Body, dedicated and hard working staff, a very supportive community, parents and carers who want the very best for the children and most importantly talented, enthusiastic children.

I would like to also take this opportunity to 'thank you' for your very warm welcome to Bourn. I look forward to working with you all next term on our school journey and wish you a restful and relaxing break.

A message from Vince Chaney

I'm letting you know that I have stepped down as Chair of Governors after five years in the role. It's been a real privilege to work with the staff, governors and the whole school community to give our children a great start in life.

Roxanna Glennon and James Davenport have been elected as Co-Chairs and I know they will do a great job leading the board.

Being a governor has been a very rewarding experience for me. The board are looking for new parent governors at present, so please get in touch with Roxanna or James if you are interested.

On behalf of the whole school I would like to thank Vince for his dedication, hard work and support of the school over the recent years.

Attendance and illness

I thought it might be useful to share the following guidance over whether children should or should not come to school if they are suffering from an illness. Please click here to be taken to the NHS guidance on 'Is my child too ill for school?'

Around school

CB23 Careers Convention

This was an excellent event hosted by the CB23 cluster group for Year 5 with lots of stalls and information about potential careers that the children could consider. It also allowed the children to think about the different skills needed in different roles and what they may be interested in as a job in their future.

EYFS allotment visit

Earlier on in the week the EYFS children visited the local allotments where they saw the chickens and eggs that had been laid. I was fortunate enough to be in the class just after they returned and the children spoke very enthusiastically about their trip and the number 4 (number of chickens they saw) and 5 (number of eggs laid).

This week we announced our new School and Eco-Council representatives.

This year Eco-Council will be:

Congratulations to our new Eco and School Council members for making it through the selection process. We look forward to hearing about their work to improve our school and community.

Around school

This week around school I have been most impressed by the children's attitude towards their learning and general behaviour. The children speak confidently about what they are learning, how it is linked to what they have learnt before and can explain what 'success' looks like in the lesson. This is allowing for progress to be seen and a real sense of achievement to be felt by the children.

Next week on Friday (3rd October) it will be our Harvest Service and therefore there will be no Community Celebration Assembly. Should you wish to come and join us for the Harvest Service you are most welcome to, please see the email from Debs for details.

Welcome

Welcome to the Autumn term 2025. Whilst the weather did not feel the most welcoming on Wednesday morning it was great to see so many children with smiles on their faces clearly happy to be back at school and ready to learn.

I have been most impressed with all the learning that has been taking place in school over the past three days -whether this be reasoning in maths, fantastic mathematical vocabulary being used to describe 2D shapes, understanding of the punctuation requirements for writing or the excellent resilience and determination shown in PE session.

I am also very much looking forward to the Bourn 2 Run event being held later on this month and look forward to seeing as many of you there as can make it. Please do feel free to cheer me on as I run the 10km event!

Thank you

I wanted to take this opportunity to say "Thank you" to the whole Bourn community as you have all made me feel so welcome. Bourn is clearly a very special place to be and I feel honoured to be part of it.

I have enjoyed meeting so many of you over the past few days and look forward to meeting more of you in the upcoming days.

I have been most impressed by how polite and respectful the children are and how articulate they are when I have been speaking with them.

Year 6 Leavers Assembly

This morning we had a fantastic Leavers Assembly for our Year 6 children who are moving on to secondary schools. There were tributes from Miss Hensleigh and there wasn't a dry eye in the house (the adults at least) when their Acorn buddies sang 'You've Got a Friend in Me'.

The children shared their memories of Bourn and specifically their time in year 6 and at Rock UK. This is the year group that were in Acorn class when I joined in January 2019 and I remember the tiny versions of them so well. I wish them all the best at their new schools and I know they will go on to shine!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

End of Term Picnic

We had a vey enjoyable end of term picnic at lunchtime, although slightly cut short by a sudden downpour! It was lovely to see so many parents and families. A special thankyou to the BSA who gave everyone an ice lolly!

Thank you!

A final thank you to everyone at Bourn - you have made my time here so special and I have been blown away by the kind words and gifts you have given me. I will always remember Bourn as the most special school and the best place to end my career as Headteacher. I will miss you all xx

Words of Wisdon (maybe) from a Retiring Headteacher

As I reflect on my long career as a parent, teacher and headteacher - and now a granny, I'd like to pass on some of the things I have learned along the way - in no particular order...

1. Let your children be bored from time to time. You are not their entertainments committee and they need to learn how to while away an hour or two by themselves. The long term gain will be worth the short term moaning, I promise!

2. Phones - I have a lot to say about phones and children! Resist giving your child their own phone for as long as you can, and set up strict rules when you do. Put your own phone down and talk instead. Give your children a book or colouring to keep them amused when you're out instead of a phone... I could go on!

3. Being on your child's side is not the same as always taking their side. If they have done wrong, let them be accountable for their actions. Support your child through those uncomfortable feelings rather than trying to remove them.

4. All children lie - it's a developmental fact and not a sign of them being a bad person! By the time they are school age they will build up, minimise or deny their part in the re-telling of events. If you hear the words, '...for no reason', or ,'I didn't do anything' - be sceptical! If it's something that happened at school, it is helpful to say, 'my child said this happened - please can you tell me more?'

 5. Prepare your child for the rocky road of life. Things will happen, sometimes life changing things that we wish our children didn't have to deal with. We can't stop things happening but we can give our children the tools to deal with them and the support they will need to get through them.

6. Remember the importance of context and that your child's account of what happened is the account of a child - there will always be more information you need to know - just ask!

7. Keep things in perspective, which may be one of the hardest things to do when you have small children. Keep big words (and big emotions) for the really big things - try to use 'upset' rather than distress; use 'worry' rather than anxiety; 'easily annoyed' rather than 'anger issues'.

8. Remember the power of the Growth Mindset. Intelligence is not fixed and with effort, you - and your children - can achieve anything you set your mind to.

9. Enjoy your child's childhood as it is so fleeting. In a blink of an eye they will be leaving home and having children of their own!

 10. Delight in the magic of children and their unique outlook on life. Write down the funny things they say to keep alongside the photos. Children are the best of us.

Year 6 Leavers' Play

This week, the children in Oak class performed their play The Island that Rocks to the school on Wenesday afternoon and to their parents on Thursday evening. The play was full of wonderful songs which the children sang beautifully. The acting was excellent and they received rapturous applause after both performances. Well done, Oak Class you were AMAZING!!

Thank you to Jean-Luc Benazet for the photographs.

The Year 6s continued their exciting week with their Year 6 Leavers BBQ on the school field after school on Friday. They had a great time with delicious food and drinks, games such as tug of war 9with the children beating the adults!), welly wanging and a colour run! Thank you to the parents who organised this, led by Feliz. The children had an amazing time!

THANKYOU

I wanted to say thank you to all the children, staff and parents who made by Leaving Assembly assembly so wonderful. The children from each class performed a poem, song or shared memories of my time as headteacher and each class gave me cards filled with lovely drawings and messages. Thank you also to Mrs Wheatman, Miss Hensleigh and Vince Chaney (Chair of Governors) for their kind words. I have been given some wonderful gifts, including a hammock to hang in my garden in Norfolk, where I will sit and read my books and think of you all. I haven't quite retired yet - we still have 2 days of term next week, but the focus will quite rightly be on our Year 6 leavers on Tuesday. Thank you everyone who was involved in making my final Friday assembly so memorable.

Walk for Mrs Monks

On Wednesday, the whole school (every adult and child) went on a walk ro the woods near the school to remember Mrs Monks. We chose to do a walk because last year Mrs Monks did the Macmillan Mighty Hike along the Norfolk coast. We stopped in the woods and had a drink and a snack, listened to the rustle of the leaves and thought about Mrs Monks. The children were brilliant and we had a lovely time. Mr Monks came too and was very touched by the event.

Year 5 Maths Challenge

Four children from Year 5 took part in the Finals of the Cambridgeshire Year 5. This was the first time in many years that Bourn has reached the finals! Well done to Ivana, Elisha, Myra and Shrirang!

This week we held a tea party to show our appreciation to all the parents, volunteers and other people from the village that help in the school in any way. We are very grateful for the time and effort everyone puts in to making the school an even better place for the children. The choir ang some lively songs and children in Years 5&6 played the piano for our guests too. Thank you to Jules from the kitchen for making deliciour scones too!

I would like to mention Catherine Byfield, who is continuing as Chair; Dee Sturdy who is continuing as Vice Chair; Simone Glennen who is continuing as Secretary; and Mimi Wheeler, who is stepping down as Treasurer (although remaining on the Committee) and Lucie Zubrik who is taking on the role of Treasurer. Thank you also to the committee members and all those who help at specific events.

Year 6 Residential

This week Oak Class have been on their residential trip to Rock UK. The children have engaged with all the activities which they have enjoyed immensely.

A huge thank you to Miss Hensleigh, Mrs Ford and Mrs Collins for looking after them 24/7 since Monday morning! Residential trips are only possible if there are staff willing to take on this responsibility, so I know how grateful the children and parents are!

Acorn Class Assembly

The children in Acorn class performed their class assembly today in front of the whole school and parents. They performed brilliantly. I'd like to share one parent's feedback which sums it up beautifully:

The message, beautifully expressed through the use of color, was both brilliant and captivating. It was a thoughtful and creative presentation by the little ones that left a lasting impression. Our sincere appreciation goes to the teachers for guiding them so wonderfully.

Acorn Class Trip

Acorn class had a lovely time at Wandlebury where they took part in lots of nature based activities, such as pond dipping. They were extremely excited as they left and enjoyed themselves so much that a few fell asleep on the way back! Thank you to Mrs Garrad, Mrs Crome and all the parents who helped on the day.

 Willow Class Trip

This week, Willow Class went on a visit to Hamerton zoo where they saw lots of different animals including tigers! They also went into the sloth enclosure to meet some sloths! Thank you to Mrs Wilson, Mrs Lauria and Miss McCollum together with the parents who helped with this trip.

Hot Weather Monday & Tuesday

The forecast for Monday and Tuesday is for very high temperatures. I have sent an email outlining measures we will take to keep the children as cool as possible.

The uniform requirements will be relaxed on these days only so children can wear more comfortable clothes. Please ensure any tops cover shoulders and that your children have suncream on before coming to school.

Sports Day

The children had a wonderful time at Sports Day and I even overheard 2 Year 6 children saying it was 'the best day ever!' Mr Puckey organised a great morning which was in two parts - a carousel of activities and then running races, finishing with the gorgeous Acorn and Oak Buddies relay. Throughout the morning, children showing our values were given Values Awards of 10 extra points for their house.

Well done to Seacole House who won Sports Day!

A huge thank you as ever to Mr Puckey and the staff for all their extra work in organising and supervising Sports Day.

I'd also like to thank the parents who volunteered to help with the activities. Without your help it would not have been able to run in the same way.

Humanities Quiz at Bourn

This week Bourn hosted the CB23 Humanities Quiz, where teams from schools in the CB23 area compete by answering questions on subjects including Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, Violent Planet, World Religions and history and geography general knowledge. Well done to Elynn, Sam T, Locke, Hartej, Maddie and Simone.

 Late Arrivals

The school day starts at 8.45am with the register. Children arriving at the gate at 8.45 will be late for the register by the time they get to the classroom. They will also have missed much of the early work, reading time and responding to marking that is done before the children go to Collective Worship.

Please can you ensure that your child is in their classroom before 8.45am. Thank you.

Deadlines

There are increasing numbers of incidents where deadlines are missed (payments, permissions for trips and activities, lunch orders, purchasing tickets for events such as the disco).

We have always tried to be very accommodating, but this is now happening with such frequency that it is creating significant extra work for staff, which is not fair.

Deadlines are set to ensure the smooth running of an event, to promote inclusion and to help those organizing the event. Where a deadline is set, we ask that you do meet this. Failure to do so may result in your child not being able to participate. This applies to both school and BSA events.

Many thanks for your consideration in this matter.

Year 3 & 4 Singing Performance

This week Cedar and Rosewood Classes performed to the whole school and to parents. They sang and danced brilliantly to a range of exciting pop songs including Believer, Baby, Azizam and a finale of The Greatest Showman. Their enthusiasm and joy in performing was evident and they received great reviews! Well done Year 3 and 4 and thank you to Mrs Camisa, Mrs Woodruffe, Mrs Collins and Mr Romeo for all your hard work in preparing this.

Willow Class Assembly

Willow class also performed this week in their class assembly. They shared what they had learned and were all able to recite the story of The Gingerbread Man. They also sang Count on Me by Bruno Mars!

Father's Day Breakfast

This morning, lots of children and their dads came for a special Father's Day breakfast, cooked by Jules and organised by Catherine and the BSA. They had a choice of pancakes, bacon or sausage butties and a choice of drinks. The children also made key rings and other crafts. Thank you to everyone who helped with this fantastic event and Happy Father's Day on Sunday to all the dads and grandads.

Thankyou!

A huge thank you to JJ and the Bourn Village Store who have nominated the school and BSA to receive a donation of £850 from the Nisa Making a Difference Charity.

Shops can nominate a local charity and Bourn shop chose us this time! Not only is the shop and post Office a vital part of the local community, but by supporting the shop you are also supporting the school and the village community.

 Swimming Lessons

These will start next week. A reminder that children will only be allowed to swim if they are wearing a swimming hat and are not wearing any jewellery, including earrings
