On Wednesday, over 40 children from Key Stage 2 competed in the Cambridgeshire Sports Partnership Cross Country Competition at Milton Country Park. (click for a longer article). There were 600 children from 17 different school competing and all our children showed determination and resilience when running.

Overall, Bourn came 3rd in the Year 5/6 races and the Year 3/4 races!
Well done to everyone who took part. Thank you to Mr French and Mrs Wheatman for taking the children and thank you to all the parents who came to help supervise and support.

Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
The Grit Workbook for Kids: CBT Skills to Help Kids Cultivate a Growth Mindset and Build Resilience by Elisa Nebolsine.
This workbook is recommended by therapists and aims to help adults and children develop grit - an essential element of a growth mindset. It contains 28 different activities to help children manage emotions, bounce back from setbacks and be open to new things.
Odd Socks Day
Today the children wore odd socks and brighly coloured tights as part of Anti Bullying Week. This is a symbol of individuality and to show we are all different, have different tastes and all look different.

Road Safety Patrol
Our Year 5 Road Safety Monitors this week are Anna, Yuyan and Ava. They spoke to children in assembly today to remind them to cross in the safest place opposite the school entrance, not to cross where the bus parks and to look both ways when walking across the road.
Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
We don't need resilience when things are easy and it is natural for your child to feel ever so slightly uncomfortable when they face a challenge. Sometimes, they may not even want to engage with it to begin with but this is where having a growth mindset is so important and where resilience is key. Encourage your child to give these challenging things a good go and remind them that it is ok to find things tricky.
The Value of Friendship
Every week, on a Tuesday afternoon, Year 4 go to help Year 1 with their computing skills for 10 minutes. From this, it is lovely to see the children developing skills in patience, kindness and leadership roles. The children are proud of how their partners are developing and we are proud of how seriously they take this role.

After School Clubs
We now have more clubs running after school. As well as Book Club, KS1 Multisports Club and Cycling Club (invitation only), we now have Orienteering, Chess and Journalism Clubs running across the school.
Potential Grandmasters in action!
Road Safety Patrol
Our Year 5 Road Safety Monitors this week are Hector, Millie and Skye. They do a great job of monitoring the traffic and how people cross the road. This week, they have been shocked by the number of people who cross the road opposite the bus bay which is at a blind bend AND that lots of cars drive quickly around the blind bend. The more this happens the more likely a serious accident is. Please let's reduce the chances of an accident by NEVER crossing opposite the bus bay or at the blind bend, and driving very slowly around the corner.
Kids Club - Breakfast Club
Kids Club are now running a Breakfast Club (childcare) every morning from 7.45am to 8.45am. There are spaces so if you are interested, please email info@cambridgekidsclub.com
Spare Sheds??
If you happen to be getting rid of a shed that is still in relatively good condition, please could you let us know. Our Resources Shed is about to collapse...!
Free School Meals
Did you know, the school receives extra funding for children eligible for Free School Meals, so even if your child gets free school meals in Key Stage 1, it is worth applying if you are eligible.
You can apply for free school meals if you receive any of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
- Universal Credit
TO APPLY, complete this application form on the Cambridgeshire County Council website or call 01223 703200.
Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
Be kind to yourself! Rather than feeling bad about your mistakes, try and identify how you’d treat someone else in your situation. If someone was to fail at a task you know inside out, would you tell them they’re useless or would you encourage them to learn?
Celebrations!
The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Resilience. More details are on the Class Pages every week.

Trading Cards
Children should not be bringing in toys, especially trading cards. These have caused a lot of upset when children have traded and then change their minds. I know they can be expensive so we don't want children to lose them either. Many thanks.

Hedgehogs!
This week, all the children have learned all about hedgehogs and how to look after them. Judith Large from Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity visited the school and did a talk to each Key Stage, showing fascinating pictures, including the cutest pictures of baby hedgehogs. The children were so keen to support the charity, the House Captains have decided that this is the Charity that houses will raise money for this year. Find out more at www.swccharity.org

School Council - Carved Vegetable Competition
The School Council organised a 'Carved Vegetable' competition this week and there were over 35 entries which showed amazing artistic talent and imagination. All the entries were displayed in the hall and the whole school voted for their favourite designs. The winners were: Shrirang, Cameron and Anna with the designs below.
All the entries are being displayed as part of a Harvest Vegetable Trail around the streets of Bourn. Children will bring home a leaflet today about how to take part in the trail. Thank you to Miss Nutland and School Council for organising this fun event.
Long Hair
If your child has long hair, please can you ensure that it is tied back. This is the best way to prevent the spread of head lice. Thank you.

Teddy Bears Picnic
Last week, Acorn Class spent time in the Nature Reserve going on a Bear Hunt! They made sandwiches to eat when they were there and when they had finished they had to go and hunt down their teddies who had hidden themselves in the woods!
Bourn to Run
The Bourn to Run committee are delighted to announce that the event raised just shy of £8000, which is absolutely super and more than they have ever raised before! This will have a hugely tangible impact on the children at the school and the experience they receive, especially given the current economic climate when costs are rising but funding is not. From this £8000 they will also make a community donation to the Bourn church and Bourn Sports Club.
Whether you or your child ran the 3k or 10k, came down to the Rec to experience the atmosphere, bought a burger, liked us on Facebook, marshalled for the event, promoted us to friends or family….. a huge huge thank you; is only with your support that we could make the event the success it was!
As we wrap up Bourn to Run for 2022 we are already thinking about next year and we are very much hoping that Bourn to Run will be back in 2023, so if you would like to get involved in any way, please do get in touch: info@bourntorun.co.uk Again, thank you for all your support.

Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
People with a growth mindset understand that positive improvement is possible.
They believe that to achieve their goals, they must:
- View failure as a part of learning
- Put in the time
- Embrace the challenge
- Develop new strategies to overcome each challenge
Working towards a goal without these views is unlikely to lead to positive results. Developing a growth mindset won’t do much without putting in the necessary time and practice to develop a new skill.

Visit to Cambridge Mosque
Year 4 and Year 5 visited Cambridge Mosque this week to learn more about Islam, mosques and Islamic art, which Year 5 will study later this year.
Cambridge Central Mosque is an eco mosque and so a lot of wood is used as it can be regrown. They also have solar panels on the roof and motion sensors for water and light. Please see Rosewood and Cherry class pages for more photos and information. Thank you to the parents who helped with this trip.
Reading at Home
Reading with your children is one of the most important things parents can do to help support their academic development. Even when children are reading 'chapter books' independently, it is just as important to hear them read aloud. You can listen to their pace and expression as well as ask the odd question about what they have read. Please record in their reading record (KS1) and encourage them to meet their AR target in KS2. Every child has a personalised target so they are all achievable.

Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
Enjoying the process of working through a challenging task or problem is all part of having a growth mindset. So, when you're out on a walk with your child or you have some spare time in the evenings try and come up with a Maths problem or riddle that they could try and work out. For example, "I'm thinking of a number. It is even and has 2 tens. What could my number be?"

Harvest Assembly
The whole school visited the Church today for our Harvest assembly and it was lovely to see so many parents there too. Each class shared work that they had done on food, harvest and foodbanks. We heard poems and songs, looked at artwork such as the food collages made by Hazel Class and heard about the importance of donating to foodbanks. We finished with prayers from Cedar Class. Thank you to all the parents who helped with walking down to the church.
Chess Club Plea
We are starting a Chess Club for beginners (KS2) next half term on Thursdays after school. If you are a parent, carer or someone else in the community who is interested in Chess and would be keen to help with the club please contact Mrs McInerney rmcinerney@bourn.cambs.sch.uk. Thank you!
Lunchtime Gardening Club
We are about to start two lunchtime Gardening Clubs - one for Year 1&2 and one for Key Stage 2. Our first task is to tidy up the allotments. If you have any garden trowels or forks that you no longer needed, we would be happy to take them off your hands! The children would also like to plant more spring bulbs, so if you have any left over, please send them our way too! Many thanks.
Celebrations!
As we had our Harvest Service in Church today, we will have our normal Celebration Assembly on Monday.
Appeal for Parent Helpers
Last week we sent out a letter asking parents, carers and grandparents if you would be able to commit to a regular slot each week to helping in school. This could be as little as 30 minutes after drop off. Thank you to those who have already responded. There will be a meeting after school on Monday 10 October for you to find out more. If you are interested but not sure, please come along to find out more.
BSA Bag Drop
The BSA are once again holding a Bag Drop - your chance to clear old clothes, shoes, scarves, hats or handbags! Please bring them to the school gate on the morning of Wednesday 2 November when they will be collected. If You Have a Concern
From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.
Absence Reporting
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Please remember to cancel any pre- ordered lunches if your child is off sick or you may be charged by Aspens for it.
Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
When your child finds a task tricky, aim to help and guide, rather than doing it for them. This can be anything from putting shoes on to maths homework. It might take more time in the short time, but will be so much better for your child (and you) longer term!
School Gates
These have now been repaired but still remain temperamental as they are quite old. It will really help if they are not touched at all, and the yellow posts in front of them are also not touched. The black boxes on the yellow posts are the sensors and can be knocked easily, which then need repairing! Thank you.
NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: peanuts, sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, almonds, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.Tel: 01954 719282 Email: office@bournschool.co.uk

We now have a foodbank donation point in school. You can bring in items to donate at any time, but we would like to make Friday the day to remember to bring in donations. This is what we have so far - can you help fill it up?

Bourn to Run - 25 September
There are now about 100 children from school signed up to take part in this fantastic event! That's HALF of the school - amazing! Whether you are running or not - do come along to the Bourn Rec on Sunday morning. This event is a major fundraiser for the school so your support is greatly appreciated.
I would like to say a huge thank you to the Bourn to Run Committee who have given so much of their time and energy to organise this fantastic event.
Road Safety Patrol
Our Year 5 Road Safety Monitors - Ella, Thomas, Millie and Vishnu have been on duty today. They would like to remind everyone to cross at the safe crossing place and not opposite the bus stop.

Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
When your child says the phrase, I can't do something, tell them to add the word yet at the end.
For example, if they are upset because they don't know the 8 times table, say, 'You don't know it yet, but if you practice enough, you will get there. I can help you.'

New Climbing Frame
The children in Key Stage 2 have been exploring our new climbing frame and are loving it! It gives them opportunities to challenge themselves as well as improve their balance and ability. Huge thanks to the BSA for raising funds to make this possible.
Welcome to the Year Ahead Meeting
The Welcome meeting last night was well attended and it was lovely to be able to do this in person again. For those who were not able to attend, the class presentations will soon be up on the website.
The main presentation was, 'Building Resilience and a Growth Mindset' and the slides can be found here.
Friday Foodbank
We now have a foodbank donation point in school. You can bring in items to donate at any time, but we would like to make Friday the day to remember to bring in donations.
Food banks in the Trussell Trust food charity network provided more than 2.1 million emergency food parcels between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022. Of these, 832,000 were for children. This represents an 81% increase compared to the same period five years ago. Any donations you can make will help those in need in our local area. The foods most needed are listed here.
Bourn to Run - 25 September
This fantastic event raised much needed funds for the school. Please do sign up to run the 3k or 10k race - or just come along to show support! We currently have around 50 children running which is amazing, but it would be great if there were even more! See more details here www.bourntorun.com
Driving to School
A reminder that the school asks parents to operate an unofficial one way system when dropping off and picking up children. This makes it easier for everyone.
Please can I also remind parents not to park in the bus bay, on double yellow lines, on the zig zag lines or across our neighbour's driveways - even for a couple of minutes.
You are welcome to park in the car park at Manor Farm and walk from there.
Celebrations!
The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Resilience. More details are on the Class Pages every week.
Acorn: will start from next week
Willow: Alexander and Genevieve
Hazel: Woody and Emily
Cedar: Sam B and Millie
Rosewood: Theo and Maddy

Pankhurst: 195 Total: 312
Seacole: 204 Total: 337

School Gate
The mechanism for one of the electronic gates is currently broken. This happens when the gates are pushed or forced open. Please can you ensure that you don't try to get through them when they are closed, and that your children don't push them when waiting in the morning. The work to repair and replace is costing over £3.500 so we need to look after them!
Individual Photographs
Children will be having individual photographs taken on Thursday 22 September. There will also be sibling photographs taken. If your child has PE on that day, we ensure they have their photo taken before having PE. They can come in normal uniform and can change into PE t- shirt/kit afterwards.
Book Swap
We have set up a Bourn Book Swap in the entrance lobby. We would love you to browse the bookshelf and borrow a book, swap it for another and donate other books you have read.

Clubs
We are currently putting together a programme of extra curricular clubs for children. You will receive an email over the next week detailing what is on offer.
Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
When praising your child for achieving something - focus on praising the effort. If they think they are brilliant at football because they scored a goal...what will they think if they don't score a goal next week?

We are greatly saddened by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. For our children, their parents and many grandparents, she has been the Queen for the entirety of their lives. She has been a constant and steady presence and just knowing she was there was a comfort to so many.
Today, we held a short assembly where I spoke to the children about the death of the Queen and the impact of this. Mrs Verwoerd played the National Anthem on the piano and we then held a minute's silence, followed by prayers led by the vicar, Reverend Steve Day.
In Memory of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II
To those who pray, we offer prayer and thanksgiving for one who gave her whole life in service of others.
We also pray for Charles our new King, for Queen Camilla and all the Royal Family, as they take on fresh responsibilities. We pray for a grieving family, for the King and his loved ones, for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
This morning, the children watched a presentation in their classes about the life of the Queen, and were able to ask questions and talk about her.
We talked about our new King, King Charles III, and how when we sing the National Anthem (which the children learned as part of the platinum jubilee celebrations), the words will now be 'God save the King'.
We remembered the good times, including our Jubilee celebrations and of course, the Queen's tea with Paddington Bear.
