Christmas Carols
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our outdoor Christmas carols this morning. It was really good to see the orchestra play for an audience and they did so well with the 6 pieces they played. Willow class's retelling of the Christmas story, with actions was also wonderful.
Thank you also to the BSA members who organised hot drinks and mince pies and organised the raffle of 8 wonderful hampers, which has raised much needed money for the school.
The children all had great fun in the 'snow' on their way back to their classrooms!
School Meals
The first week of the pre-ordering system has gone really well. Thank you for logging on to the Aspens system and ordering your child's meal. This has meant that the cooks are able to ensure that every child receives the meal they want.
Don't forget to pre-order meals for when we come back in January!
If you owe the school money for dinners before Aspens took over, you will have been contacted by the school office. Please could you make the payments as soon as possible. Many thanks.
Merry Christmas!
We wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year! Click here to see a bigger version of the Christmas card to you from all the staff.
Christmas Films
The links for the class Christmas films will be emailed to parents today. I have just watched them and it is clear that the children have really enjoyed putting on their performances. Each key Stage 2 class performed songs in different languages, and there was some very impressive Spanish speaking in the Year 6 film.
Bourn Butterflies Calendar
A reminder that you can still purchase the Bourn Butterflies 2022 Calendar produced by Pete Innes from Bourn shop. It costs £5 (cash please) and all proceeds go to Bourn School. It would make a lovely Christmas gift, while buying local and helping support the school.
This year, Pete made a special trip to Fermyn Wood to find the elusive Purple Emperor in honour of Lyla and her favourite colour.

Covid Update
With the news that cases are rising quickly, we are anticipating possible changes to how schools are required to operate in the Spring term. To date, schools have not been given any more notice of changes than the general public, so we will probably all find out at the same time. We will email parents if there are any changes as soon as we are able.
NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.
Christmas Dinner
Our Christmas dinner on Wednesday was delicious! The cooks began cooking at 6.30am and produced an excellent Christmas dinner for over 200 children and staff. Thank you to Leanne, Linda and Chantelle.

School Meals
You should now have received information about how to register and log into the Aspens Select website for ordering your child's school lunches. The menus are on the school website here.

Our Christmas dinner day is on Wednesday - children are welcome to dress up, dress down, wear Christmas jumpers, whatever they like!
Christmas dinner will be on 15 December and parents will need to order this via the new system.

Children in Cherry class have been learning to take effective digital photographs, using the cropping tool to improve their composition. This week, they focused on taking photographs of each other and applying black and white effects. They were all very impressive!

The school gates will open just before 9.30am. The BSA will provide refreshments and we will also draw the winning tickets for the fabulous Christmas Hampers.
It's not too late to donate to the hampers or buy tickets!
Bus Update
You may have noticed that our Book Bus now has real doors which are air tight and water tight. They were fitted by the amazing Cambridge Window Company, who donated their time to fit the doors and to U70.co.uk who provided the doors free of charge. Thank you so much - we really appreciate it. Thank you also to the Virtute et Fide Lodge and the City and University of Cambridge Masonic Lodge Charitable Trust who donated £500 for books which have now arrived.
Did you know that only 5% of children’s books published in 2019 had a black, Asian or minority ethnic main character, despite 33.5% of schoolchildren being of black Asian or minority ethnic origins. We bought these books from The Little Box of Books, a company that specialises in books that contain diverse characters from different ethnic backgrounds, different family situations and with a focus on gender equality.

The classes are working hard on their Christmas videos and they will be premiered on Thursday 16 December (we will send you the links!)

Happy Hanukkah!
This year, Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, began on 28 November and will end on 6 December. To celebrate the victory of the Maccabees over King Antiochus, the Jewish people tried to light the 7 pronged menorah, and although they only had enough oil to light the menorah for one day, the oil lasted for 8 days, hence the 8 day 'Festival of Lights'. A Happy Hanukkah to all those who celebrate.

Covid Update
There are now additional restrictions nationally which affect all of us, as well as concerns about the new Omicron variant. From this week, children aged 11 and over need to wear face coverings on school transport, so some of our older year 6 children are now wearing coverings on the school bus.
We will continue to keep the whole school community informed when we have a positive case. There are currently positive cases in Willow, Cedar, Rosewood and Oak classes.
If your child has any symptoms, please do a lateral flow test as these seem to have been good at picking up cases that have then been confirmed by PCR.
Isolation rules for confirmed Omicron cases are different. All contacts of suspected Omicron cases must isolate, regardless of age or vaccination status. When you get your PCR test, it will tell you if Omicron is suspected.
You can read our Outbreak Management Plan on the website to see how we are reducing the risks. Thank you for your support.

Thank you to the Staff
I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all our staff. We have worked really hard to get the new caterers in place as quickly as possible and this has involved Lesley and Debs in the office in huge amounts of work behind the scenes. Alongside this, they answer literally hundreds of phone calls and emails every day and keep the school running. A huge thank you also to all our teachers and teaching assistants. The teachers spend untold hours planning lessons, activities, trips and plays as well as communicating with parents to support the learning and well being of the children. they nurture and care deeply about the children. Our team of teaching assistants are worth their weight in gold! They are flexible, resilient, supportive and creative and are absolutely dedicated to supporting the children and their teachers. I'd also like to thank Jason and Fiona for their work in keeping the school clean and well looked after. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I'd also like to acknowledge the catering staff, who have been with us for many years and who now work for Aspens. We are so pleased they are still working in Bourn and are now producing new meals to new recipes!
School Meals
The children have loved the new school meals! They are especially happy to have the choices that they have and have given feedback such as 'fabulous' and 'it's like being in a 5 star restaurant'!
For the first three weeks of the new menu, the children can choose on the day so they have an opportunity to decide what meals they like. From 13 December, if you would like your child to have school lunch, these MUST be ordered in advance (before 9am on the day). We will send details of the Aspens Select website next week, to allow you time to register.
The pre-ordering ensures that all children will get the meal you have ordered.
A meal should be ordered for every child, including those in KS1 who have infant free school meals and other children in KS2 who have free school meals.
Look out for the email with details next week.
Christmas dinner will be on 15 December and parents will need to order this via the new system.
BSA Newsletter
Look out for the BSA newsletter today! If you would like to be involved organising events to raise money for the 'extras' that school budgets don't run to, please email bsa@bourn.cambs.sch.uk. It's a great way to get to know new people and get involved in the school!
We really do need new people to get involved and join the team.

On Wednesday, Mr French and Mrs Wheatman took 44 children from Key Stage 2 to Milton Country Part for the South Cambridgeshire Cross Country Competition.
Just under 400 children from 11 primary schools took part. They competed individually and for their team. Children from Bourn were amazing!
Amelie and Mia came first and second in the Year 6 girls race; Thomas came second in the Year 4 boy race and Albert came second in the Year 3 boys race!
Not only that, but in the overall team results, Bourn came second in Year 5/6 and fourth in the Year 3/4 team competition.
Well done to all who took part and represented our school - with a special mention also to Zach who won the Spirit of the Game award!
Thank you also to the parents who helped supervise the children - we couldn't have done it without you!

Children's Charity
The House Captains have now chosen the charity that they would like the school to fundraise for this year. The charity they have chosen is Frank Water, which is a charity funding access to clean water in India.
We are proud of the House Captains for doing their own research into different charities to make this decision.
Funds raised will be through House Days, which is something we started before the pandemic and had to discontinue.
The first House day will be Mary Seacole Day on Tuesday 23 November. See below for details.
Mary Seacole Day
Mary Seacole was a British-Jamaican nurse and businesswoman who set up the "British Hotel" behind the lines during the Crimean War. You can read more on our website.
Her House Day is on 23 November, which is her birthday. For this day, children can come dressed in yellow (Seacole House colour), dressed as a nurse (remembering that there are male and female nurses) or wearing their own clothes. Please can children bring in £1 which will be donated to Frank Water.

New Lunch Menus!
We have sent out copies of the new menus that will be in place from Monday 22 November. We are really pleased that we will soon be able to offer the children a choice of three different hot meal options each day, as well as two pudding options. For the first 3 weeks, ordering and payment will remain the same as it is currently. From 13 December, you will need to pre-order using the Aspens system. We will send further information about this next week.
Anti Bullying Week
Next week is anti bullying week, and the theme is 'One Kind Word'. We have all been working hard all term to remember the impact of our words. We have been focussing on the '3 Gates of Speech'.
"Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates. At the first gate, ask yourself, 'Is it true?' At the second gate ask, 'Is it necessary?' At the third gate ask, 'Is it kind?'
The children will be doing different activities through the week to help them identify what bullying is, and how to make sure that they behave in ways that are kind.
The Anti Bullying Alliance have produced a very helpful parent pack which can be accessed here.
Odd Socks Day - Monday
We will start Anti Bullying Week with Odd Socks Day. All you need to do is wear odd socks (or bright tights)! I's a great way to celebrate what makes us unique!
Children in Need - Friday
To end the week, it is Children in Need Day. After all our excitement of being on the radio and on local news with the Great Fancy Dress Singalong, we mustn't forget the day itself! Children can wear whatever they like on Friday, in exchange for a donation of £1 (or whatever you would like to donate) which will go to Children in Need. Don't forget to stay glued to the TV on Friday evening's programme to see if they use the clip of Bourn Primary singing our hearts out!

NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus).
One child's allergy has increased in severity this week, resulting in emergency hospital treatment. It is possible that the allergy was triggered by contact with someone who had eaten one of these foods.
We are asking all parents to look really carefully at the contents of snacks and packed lunches they send in to school, and to err on the side of caution by not sending an item in to school if it 'may contain' any of these ingredients.
Staff do check the snacks of the younger children, and if a cereal bar etc contains one of these ingredients, we will give your child a piece of fruit for snack instead. I am sure you will understand that we must do all we can to keep our children safe in school.

Parking and driving around school can be difficult and congested. Mark Proud has kindly offered the use of the car park at Manor Farm for school drop off and pick ups. You can park there and walk down to school, building in a little fresh air and exercise, and reducing the traffic around school!
Polite Request from the School's Neighbours
I have been contacted by neighbours of the school who are concerned to have seen parents using mobile phones when driving. I have also had reports of cars not observing the 20 mile per hour speed limit in the roads around school. Please follow the rules of the road, keeping your children safe and ensuring you set your children the best example.

Big Fancy Dress Singalong!
So our moment of fame has arrived! After filming us singing and dancing before half term, the children were on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire this morning singing, 'I'll be There' by Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan. Click here to listen to their wonderful and enthusiastic singing! (at 3hrs 38)
There is also a link to the BBC Cambridgeshire Facebook page with a video and text that says "Oh my goodness, aren't the children and staff of Bourn Primary Academy utterly fantastic!"
There is also an interview with me, (at 1h 36 mins) talking about the experience! We don't know if the film of us singing will be used - we'll have to keep our eyes peeled on Children in Need night on Friday 19 November.
New Caterers!
We are very pleased to announce that from 22 November, school lunches will be provided by Aspens, a company experienced in providing delicious meals in schools. We have been through a rigorous selection process, which culminated in presentations by two companies. The School Council tasted and looked carefully at the food produced by both companies and asked questions. Their opinions were taken into account when making our final decision.
Next week we will send out more information about the new catering service, changes to the menus (which will include choices each day) and changes to the ordering and payment systems. We are very excited about this change and we know that the food offer for your children will improve greatly.
Celebrations!
Values Awards and Presentation Certificates will also be on the Class Pages every week. Children who have been awarded certificates this week are:
Acorn: Milo and Georgie
Willow: Felix, Grace, Isaac and Theo O
Hazel: Jameson, Yasmin, Mela and Locke

Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road. This week, Ned, Lucy and Caitlyn were on duty. They have noticed that people are getting better at looking when they cross the road. They would like to remind children and parents that the safest place to cross the road is on the bend opposite the school driveway.
Please cross from here.....

Big Fancy Dress Singalong!
There was HUGE excitement in school yesterday! Not only did children (and staff) dress up in fancy dress, but they were also greeted by a giant panda on their way into school!
The excitement built throughout the morning until the BBC arrived to film the whole school singing 'I'll Be There', the Children in Need song. All the children gathered in front of our bus and then....Pudsey Bear arrived! Pudsey led the singing and joined in with the dancing too!
Pudsey then went into Cedar Class and they sang the song again, whilst being filmed! Pudsey also met a group of children who were interviewed for the radio. We don't know whether we will eventually be on the TV - this is out of our hands, but if so, we think it would be on the Children in Need programme on 19 November on BBC1. Even if we don't end up being on TV, we had so much fun! It was a great day!
Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road. This week, Cecilia, Seth and Seb were on duty. They have noticed a great improvement in the parking of cars, and said that on Thursday and Friday, they saw almost everyone looking carefully as they crossed the road. They are really pleased that the roads around school seem to be safer than they were. Thank you to everyone for putting our children's safety first. One thing the children would like to remind everyone to do is to keep looking both ways as they cross the road, because electric cars travel so quietly you can't always hear them coming.
Berry
In memory of Berry, the most gentle dog, who was patted and hugged every day by so many children on their way in to school. We will miss you, Berry.
Celebrations!
Values Awards and Presentation Certificates will also be on the Class Pages every week. Children who have been awarded certificates this week are:
Acorn: Alfred and Sienna
Willow: Ayden, Valentina, Josh and William B
Hazel: Forrest, Ranaldo, Isla and the whole class for the presentation of their umbrella designs in science!
Cedar: Lewis J, Annabelle, Zachary and Ethan

Bourn Book Bus Progress
Over the past few weeks, many people have volunteered to paint the bus and it is really taking shape. We still have a lot of work to do both inside and outside, but the bus is now very stable as it is resting on many concrete blocks. Thanks to Barry from KLM Autos for doing this for us!

Green Team
Mrs Tagger had a really hard time appointing the Green Team representatives for this term as so many children applied and were so passionate about why they wanted to be on the Green Team. This can only be good news for the school - and the planet. The representatives for this term are as follows:
Acorn: Gus and Kaylah
Willow: Zahra and Valentina
Hazel: Callum and Severn
Cedar: Lucienne, Finley and Rosie
Rosewood: Florence, Michael and Hanna
Cherry: Grace, Flora and Ellie
Oak: Emily C, Mustafa and Joel
A quote from Kyla's form, "I want to save the planet and I will do it." With determination like that, the world is in good hands.
Harvest Festival
Thank you for all the donations of food and essential items which we will be taking to the Trussell Trust Food Bank. Thank you also for the donations of money today as the children wore non uniform. This money will also be donated to the food bank to help them provide food for families who are really struggling.
Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road.
This week, Isabel, Avish and Eliza have been on patrol. They noticed that lots of children (and some parents) were not looking both ways when they cross the road. They spoke to all the children in Zoom assembly on Wednesday and asked them to remember to look properly. They saw a good improvement on Thursday.
Thank you to the Year 5 children for volunteering to help make the roads around school safer for everyone.

BBC Big Fancy Dress Singalong for Children in Need
The school will be taking part in this event next week, and the local BBC will be filming us singing the song By Your Side by Calvin Harris. Children will be wearing fancy dress for that day, but we have just been notified by the BBC that it will now be Thursday 21st October.
Bourn Butterfly Calendar
Many thanks to everyone who bought a copy of the Bourn Butterflies calendar produced by Pete Innes last year. In addition to brightening up a few walls, your kindness helped raise over £100 for the school to buy gardening equipment and tools that fit little hands.
We are delighted that Pete has produced another calendar for 2022 – with an even more special beneficiary in the form of the school’s Bourn Book Bus appeal in memory of Lyla Blue Glennen.
Finally – in honour of Lyla’s favourite colour purple – Pete made a special trip to Northamptonshire’s Fermyn Wood to find ‘his Majesty’ the Purple Emperor - pictured below.
The Bourn Butterflies 2022 calendar is now available from JJ’s shop – sized A4 and priced £5, with all proceeds going to the school’s Bourn Book Bus appeal.

Opera Singers in School!
On Thursday the whole school experienced amazing and inspirational performances from Meeta Ravel, a professional soprano and Julian Close, a bass opera singer. They spent time with year 2 and 3 children and helped them to understand what goes in to putting on an opera, how they came to be in the profession and how they prepare for their performances. Children in Key Stage 2 also had the wonderful experience of singing with them.

Eco Committee
Message form Mrs Tagger to all those children who submitted application forms: "I would like to thank you all for your wonderful Green Team application forms. I am extremely proud to work in a school where so many children care for our world. Your ideas and comments are amazing!
As there were so many application forms handed in from around the school I have had to take a little bit more time to read through them than I expected. It’s a process that I don’t want to rush so thank you very much for your patience".
Harvest Festival
We will be holding our harvest assemblies in school on 14 October. We would like children to bring in items of food to donate to the Food Bank. They are short of specific items and there is a list here.
On 15 October, we are asking the children to wear their own clothes and to bring in £1 which will also go to the Trussel Trust Food Bank to help them provide food for families who are really struggling.

Homework on Google Classroom
We have now set-up Google Classroom for homework for all children in Willow, Hazel, Cedar, Rosewood, Cherry and Oak Classes. Please login to Google Classroom and accept the invite for your child to join their new Google classroom.
Your child’s home-learning map for this half-term has been uploaded to the ‘Classwork’ page and can be found in the folder titled ‘Autumn 1’. If your child has completed one of the optional home-learning tasks or chooses to do so, in the future, you will now be able to upload/‘hand-in’ a picture of any of the tasks that your child has completed, onto Google Classroom.
Please note that during the last week of every half-term your child’s class teacher(s) will provide a brief piece of effort-based feedback on the work that your child has produced.
Raising Resilience
This programme is run by Bounce Forwards and is for parents of school aged children who want to learn about emotional resilience to enable them and their children to be the best version of themselves in the small everyday moments.
The course is online and lasts 6 sessions, starting on 4 November 2021. Click here for more information and how to book.

Parent Consultations
These will be held on 20 and 21 October via Zoom as last year. You can book an appointment via My Child at School App. Bookings will go live on 4 October at 6pm. Zoom links for the appointments will be sent out the day before.
Parking Issues
As well as residents contacting the school, South Cambridgeshire District Council has now also raised concerns with me about the parking of cars in and around Hall Close and Riddy Lane during school drop off and collection times. They have asked specifically that the school send out a reminder to parents to "not park in a way that prevents residents from accessing their own properties." PLEASE think of others and do not park over other people's drives - even for a couple of minutes.
Recycling Crisp Packets
We have now started the crisp packet recycling project in school. These packets can't go in normal recycling bins but can go through a specialist recycling process. There are boxes around school so if you have any at home, please send them in with your child and we can save a bit of landfill space.
Eco Committee
This week, children are able to apply to become a member of the Eco Committee. There is an application form and children who are interested are asked to apply for a place. You can help your child with the form which they may bring home if they want to complete it at home. Selections will be made based on the application form.

Jane Bradford
I am writing to share the very sad news that Jane Bradford, one of our governors, died yesterday morning. Jane had been a foundation governor for a number of years and was a great support to the school, particularly in our links with the church.
Jane was instrumental in organising the wonderful Easter Experiences that the church put on for the children, both in Church and this year in the school grounds.
Jane was also a very keen gardener and she and her husband did a lot of work helping to develop our Reflection Garden under the willow tree. Jane was a kind and generous person and I know that anyone who knew her will miss her greatly.

House Captain Elections
Every year the children elect two House Captains for each of our four houses. This year, twenty children in Oak class put themselves forward for this role and every one of them would have made an excellent House Captain. However, there can only be two Captains per house and I am pleased to announce the House Captains are as follows:
Pankhurst: Theo P and Matteo
Hawking: Aoife and Freya
Seacole: Emily R and Jude
Shackleton: Katie and Chloe.
The children's acceptance speeches in Zoom assembly on Monday morning showed how pleased and honoured they are to be taking on this role. Well done to each of you!
School Lunches
As mentioned at the Guide to the Year Ahead meeting, we will be changing lunch provision later this term. We are in the process of asking school lunch companies to tender for the provision of lunch at Bourn. This is an opportunity to review the food on offer and make improvements to the menu and increase the choice for children. We will be sending out a survey for parents so you can let us know the kind of food that your children would like to eat.
There are strict guidelines for provision of food in school, (eg limited amount of sugar and salt over the week) so all dishes will have to comply with this. We are also asking the children what kinds of food they would like and have had some interesting and very do-able suggestions.
School Council
The ballot boxes were out again as voting in the different constituencies of the school began this week. I had the privilege to hear some of the candidates' speeches this week and I am delighted that so many children are keen to serve their peers on the school Council
The School Councillors for the Autumn term will be announced next week.

Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road. This week, Declan, Lucy and Angiolina have been on patrol. They report that "hardly anyone now parks in the bus bay which makes it much safer for everyone. More children are crossing in the safest place and they are getting much better at looking both ways." Thank you to Year 5 children who volunteer to do this role, helping to make the area around school a safer place.

Hair & Headlice
As often happens in September, we have had cases of headlice in school. Please can all parents check their child's hair carefully and treat if needed.
In order to prevent the spread of headlice, children must have long hair tied back. This helps everyone avoid the pain of combing out nits. We have spare hair bobbles so will be able to give your child one if they forget.

House Captain Elections
Every year the children elect two House Captains for each of our four houses. This year, twenty children in Oak class put themselves forward for this role. They wrote speeches and presented them in KS2 and KS1 assemblies. Following the presentations, each child had a ballot paper, made their choice and posted it in the class ballot box. We talked about the importance of making up your own mind, and not being influenced by others' opinions. We also talked about the importance of ballots being secret. This year, we have moved away from having one boy and one girl captain for each house. We asked children to vote for the two people they thought would be best at the job. The votes are being counted today and results announced to the school on Monday.
All the adults who listened to the speeches were incredibly impressed by the high standard and quality. I said to all the children who put themselves forward how proud I was of their courage and willingness to stand, knowing what stiff competition there was. I know that each and every child that stood would have made an excellent House Captain and whether they are voted in or not, they will continue to be excellent role models.
Next week, the election process for School Council will begin.

Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road. This week, Molly, Logan and Ellie were on duty this week and they have the following message: "Please remember to look both ways when crossing the road. Thank you for not parking in the bus bay."
Thank you to all the children who volunteer to do this duty to help the roads outside school be as safe for children as possible.

Absence reporting
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Covid Absence Isolation is now only required for a person who has tested positive for Covid. If you live with someone who is positive, you do not need to isolate. A Guide for parents is here on our website. Please continue to let us know if a member of the household is positive. If you have particular concerns about sending your child in to school in these circumstances, please contact me or Debs.
Thankyou
Thank you for getting the children in to school before 8.50am. This has had a positive benefit for the children as they are able to start the register and morning lessons promptly.
NO NUTS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe nut allergies. Please, please double check that any snacks you give your child, specifically cereal bars, do not contain nuts. Thank you.

Book Bus Update!
Much progress has been made on transforming our old bus into a new and exciting Book Bus.
Over the holiday lots of parents and staff worked on getting the inside ready for the next stage of development. The floors and sides have been boarded and it is now complete with electricity and a heating and air conditioning unit!
The first undercoats of paint have been put on and we will soon start more painting of walls, ceiling, window frames and railings.
The replacement of the old doors, and the transformation of the outside will hopefully begin soon.
We have already had over 1400 books donated by so many generous people and we can't wait to get them into the bus, ready for children to borrow!
We would especially like to thank Paul Church for donating not just the electrical equipment on the bus but also his time in installing it. For photos of the bus, as it looks now, please click here.
Welcome to Acorn Class!
We have loved getting to know our new little Acorns during their sessions this week! They have explored the whole school and visited big brothers and sisters! The small groups have really enabled the children to have lots of time and attention as they settle in to a new learning environment. The teachers have been able to really get to know the children too.
Road Safety Message from Cherry Class
Every day, children from Cherry Class monitor the driving and parking of cars and the safety of children and adults crossing the road. This week, Karl, Ned and Flora were on duty and they have the following message:
"People were parking over people's drives and they did not like it at all. Please stop parking on drives, on the corner or in the bus bay.
We think some cars drive too fast. Please drive slowly because if a child is crossing and not looking there could be an accident.
Please don't run across the road or let your child run across the road.
Please teach them and show them how to look both ways and cross in a safe place. Please be cautious about crossing the road in general."
Thank you to all the children who volunteer to do this duty to help the roads outside school be as safe for children as possible.
Celebrations!
Values Awards and Presentation Certificates will also be on the Class Pages every week. Children who have been awarded certificates this week are:
Willow: Juliette, William D, Theo F, Sofia
Hazel: Rocco, Elynn, Severn, Lauren
Cedar: Tristan, Jaxton, Albert, Joe
Rosewood:Hattie, Vishnu, Alex and Bo
Cherry:Molly, Karl, Jake, Daisy
Oak: Mia, Olly, Theo P, Lola
'Welcome to the Year Ahead' Parent Meeting
We will be holding an online information evening for parents on Thursday 16 September starting at 6pm with a presentation from the Headteacher and Chair of Governors with an opportunity to ask questions. This will be followed by two 15 minute sessions by each class teacher.
Each session will be repeated so parents will be able to attend more than one. The Zoom links for these meetings will be sent out on the morning of 16 September.
Homework
We will continue to follow the Bourn approach to homework (more detail here) which is a combination of essential and optional homework. We will use Google Classroom to set both of these elements from 17 September.
This week, the homework will be on the Class Weekly Review, which will be published on the class pages.
Lunchtime monitors
Each day, 3 children from Oak Class help in the hall during lunchtime. They have been extremely helpful and have ensure that lunchtime is as efficient as possible by clearing away plates, and helping younger children.
NO NUTS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe nut allergies. Please, please double check that any snacks you give your child, specifically cereal bars, do not contain nuts. Thank you.

Covid Absence Isolation is now only required for a person who has tested positive for Covid. If you live with someone who is positive, you do not need to isolate. A Guide for parents is here on our website. We are working through the guidance as new scenarios emerge. I completely understand the nervousness involved in sending a child in to school (as is required) when a member of the household is positive. We would like to ask parents to give their child a lateral flow test daily during the time when a member of the household is positive. Whilst we can't require this, it is a way that we can, as a school community, protect each other whilst keeping children in school. Please continue to let us know if a member of the household is positive.
The school gates open at 8.35am. Please can all children be inside the gates by 8.50am when the register is taken. Thankyou.

New Website!
I hope you have been able to look at our new website! Our aim was to make it easy to navigate and find what you are looking for.
There is now a search button and a translate button so it can be translated into any language.
We have reviewed every page and made some updates, so it would be useful to read through as much as you can.
We have created an entire section on each subject in the curriculum. The teachers have worked hard over the last year reviewing our curriculum and making sure it is interesting and exciting and builds on previous years’ learning.
There are Quick Links to each class page on the right hand side of the screen. From next Friday, each page will be updated and will provide the same information as the current Weekly Reviews. We will still email you weekly with a link to the class page to make it as easy as possible.
There are galleries of photographs showing different events and activities, and we will add more as the year goes on. If you scroll down the front page, there are 4 buttons which will take you to Newsletters, the school calendar, lunch menus and the school calendar, which we will be updating over the next week. We welcome any feedback you have!
Welcome Back!
It has been wonderful to see the children back again they look like they have grown so much over the summer (maybe it was all that rain!)
The children and their new teachers are getting to know each other better and have had a great two days in their new classrooms.
The Year 6s in Oak Class look very smart in their red uniform. They can’t wait for the new Acorns to start and are looking forward to meeting their new Buddies.
Today we had our assembly outside, and once a week we will hold Key Stage assemblies in the hall. It has been lovely to get a little more normality in to the school day. However, we will closely monitor the situation and will be able to increase or reduce our preventative measures accordingly.
Amazing Bus Progress!
Despite it being the summer holidays, amazing progress has been made on the inside of the bus, thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers. Next week’s newsletter will have a full update!
