Staff Goodbyes
We said a fond farewell to Mrs Tagger yesterday and wish her all the best for the next stage is her life's adventure. We also wish Miss Walsh the very best as she leaves us to train as a teacher. Mrs Petrou is finishing her time in Year 5 and we have loved having her back in the school.
Finally, we say farewell to Mrs Balls, who is taking early retirement after 33 years of teaching - she deserves a gold medal!
We aren't saying good bye (just farewell), as all of these lovely people are keen to keep in touch with the school and do the odd day's supply teaching!
Mrs Balls

Goodbye and Good Luck to our Year 6s!
We said a very fond farewell to our wonderful Year 6 children today. The Leavers' Assembly was very well attended and parents, grandparents, siblings and other family members joined us as we heard their memories from the children of their time at Bourn Primary.
Mrs Culley and Mrs Wheatman presented each child with a special book from the school as they read insightful and often funny character descriptions of each child. They were also all given a lovely olive wood cross and prayer card from the church.
After the assembly, parents and children went into Oak Classroom to watch a video made up of photographs of all the children from Reception onwards.
We wish all our Year 6 children the very best of luck for their secondary school. We have loved having you here but know you will do brilliantly!
Design and Technology Week
Many classes have been focusing on DT this week - despite the heat of Monday and Tuesday! Oak Class have made bird boxes, Rosewood Class have been cooking Mexican food and Willow class have designed their own T shorts, which they wore today - some excellent examples are below!
Photos of our Bus
We have now put together a Gallery of photos of the Book Bus from start to finish. You can have a look at them in the News & Events tab of the website or by clicking here. We can't wait to start using the bus in September! Also have a look at the Cambridge Independent this week as there is a great article about the Book Bus.

End of Year Picnic
It was lovely to finish the term with cooler weather and a picnic on the back field. We hope you enjoyed joining with the children for the last lunch of the year.
Thank you to the Staff
I want to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Bourn for all their hard work this year. Whilst the teachers teach the children brilliantly, they certainly couldn't do what they do without the amazing team of Teaching Assistants, who provide support not only for the children but for the teachers as well. The Teaching Assistants also provide supervision at lunchtime and are out with the children in rain and shine (a lot of shine this week!) The Leadership Team, which includes Mrs Culley and Mrs Wheatman, undertake so much work which helps move the school forward. Often this is unseen, but without it, we would all soon notice the difference. Mr French has continued to provide excellent sport provision and his organisation of Sports Day was very successful. Mrs Armitage and Mrs Verwoerd have re-established the orchestra this year (after Covid) and they are back to full strength, playing beautifully at Friday assemblies. We changed the catering provision this year and the staff who now work for Aspens have provided a vastly improved offer for children. Our cleaners, Jason, Fiona and Moya have done a great job of keeping the school clean, especially the additional lunchtime cleaning. Finally, I would like to mention Lesley, our Finance Manager, who ensures an excellent control of the budget, and Debs, who is head of the 'Control Centre' - otherwise known as the office! I am sure that few people fully appreciate the extent of Debs' role - as well as answering 100s of emails and phone calls a day, she is also responsible for a range of processes and systems - without which the school would not function properly. Thank you to each and every member of staff - they are dedicated to their role, they care for the children and do everything they can to make the school as good as it can be. We are looking forward to seeing you all next year. Have a great summer everyone and we will see you on Monday 5 September!

Year 6 Performance
Oak Class put on a fantastic performance of their play 'Let the Games Begin!' to the school on Wednesday morning and to their families on Thursday evening. All the children worked so hard on making this an excellent performance and the singing was out of this world! Well done Oak Class! You were amazing!!
Writing for Refugees
Rosewood Class have been working extremely hard over the past weeks to create a book to raise money for refugees. The children were inspired by reading Onjali Q Raúf’s novel The Boy at the Back of the Class. One of their class' parents arranged for them to have a personal zoom call with her and it was extremely inspiring. Onjali told them a lot about refugees and what they face. Following this, the children came up with the fantastic idea to create a book to sell to raise money for refugees.
The children wrote poems, stories, comic strips and fact files at home and put a huge amount of effort into this.
Haiku about Refugees, by Vishnu
Refugees are brave,
Looking for a friend,
Let them share our land.
We are extremely proud to say that they have raised a total of £575 for the Choose Love charity. Copies of the book are reserved for Year 4 families but if you would like to donate or find out more about what we have done, please visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/ccppx-writes-for-refugees
Hot Weather
We will continue with non-uniform for Monday and Tuesday next week so children can wear light clothes to keep them cool. We will carry on using the front field where there is more shade and make decisions throughout the day whether the children will be better inside or outside during lessons and play/lunchtimes. We will continue to encourage children to keep drinking water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Swimming lessons will continue up to the last day of term. Please ensure your child has sunscreen on before they come to school and bring a named bottle of sunscreen if they are bringing some each day. Thank you.

The Book Bus is Open!
Today was the day when we officially opened our amazing Bourn Book Bus - a non fiction library in memory of Lyla Blue Glennen. It has taken over a year of hard work and dedication by a group of staff, parents and Lyla's family - and lots of fundaising from the whole school community. So many local businesses and individuals have given up so much time, and donated so many resources, we have been able to create something truly wonderful! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who has been involved in any way in making this dream a reality!
our VIP who helped with official cutting of the ribbon!
A Day of Stories!
As part of the Book themed day, children in EYFS and KS1 took part in sessions with Preacher the Storyteller, who took them on wild adventures of imagination!
Children in KS2 worked with author Keith Hatton to design a most incredible animal!
A Special Treat!
As a little extra treat, all the children had a Mr Whippy ice cream after their lunch!
All Aboard!
The children got the opportunity to visit the bus during the afternoon.
Summer Fete
We held our first summer fete for 3 years! It was a great occasion to see families and childlen at stalls, on zorbs and taking part in so many other activities.
Thank you to the BSA and everyone who helped on stalls and with the overall organisation of the day. An enormous thank you goes to Louisa Harvey, without whom the fete could not have happened.
The BSA is a very important part of our school, and as well as organising fun activities for children and families, they raise money to provide the children with facilities they would not otherwise have. We will support a big recruitment drive in the new school year - please have a think about how you could contribute!

What is Your Dream for our School
We are developing a vision for our school over the next 3-5 years, and we’d really value your input.
The vision will lay out what the school will look and feel like, but most importantly, what being at Bourn means for our children. It also aims to describe what our children will have learned/be like (e.g. skills, knowledge, mindset and relationships) when they leave Bourn. We want to gather your thoughts as very important members of our school community.

Is your child interested in Archaeology?
Cambridge University is part of a Festival of Archaeology being held on Saturday 16 July. Learn about rock art, learn to 'hunt' with a bow and arrow, make clay pots and much more. Children in Year 3 learn about the Stone Age and I'm sure lots of children would be very interested in taking part.
You can find out more information here.

Spelling Bee
Four children from Key Stage 2 took part in the CB23 Schools Spelling Bee competition on Monday this week. They worked as a team and contributed well to each round. The winning team only scored 2 points more than our team, so they did really well! Well done to Mia, Ella, Rishabh and Kiko.
Year 3&4 Cricket Tournament
Ten children from Years 3 and 4 took part yesterday in the South Cambs Kwik Cricket competition. they played four matches and won every game - which meant that Bourn won the whole tournament! We are even more proud of the fact that they were nominated for the 'Spirit of the Games Award' too! We talk about 'losing with dignity and winning with grace' - the children have certainly shown they can win with grace. Well done to all the team, and thank you to Mr French and the parents who helped transport the children.
Bourn to Run
Bourn to Run is a 3k and 10k race, organised by the BSA. The varied and challenging 10km course race can test even the most experienced runners. For everyone else, the 3km fun run around the village of Bourn is a much gentler event, attracting fitness enthusiasts and fun runners! You can even do it in fancy dress!
After a two year forced break it is back with a bang! We’d love to see as many runners from the school as possible, pupils, staff and parents. For all non runners there’s LOADS to do on the rec including Zorbs, Face Painting, BBQ, ice creams and more, so something for everyone.

Athlete Visit
We were so lucky this week to meet Alistair Patrick Hestleton.
Alistair is an Athlete Mentor for the Youth Sport Trust, a children’s charity working to ensure every child enjoys the life-changing benefits that come from playing sport. Alistair was a footballer from a young age but in 2006 was involved in a car accident fracturing his skull and spending two months in a coma. He subsequently went on to represent Team GB at the Paralympic Games and was inducted into the 2017 National Football Museum Hall of Fame.
As well as talking to all the children in assembly, Alistair spent time with each class, leading games and talking to them about positive attitudes and being resilient in the face of setbacks. He really inspired all of us.
“I am trying to hold the light and shine the torch for anyone who had their dreams taken away from them. I am living proof that if you keep believing and keep trying, you can always get to your dreams.”
Cedar Class Trip
Cedar Class went to Milton Country Park this week to practice using a compass and reading maps in their orienteering activity.
Willow Class Trip
Willow Class went on a trip this week to Hamerton Zoo, where they learned about lots of different animals and had a great time in the adventure playground too!

If you have a concern
From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.
Absence Reporting
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Please remember to cancel any pre- ordered lunches if your child is off sick or you may be charged by Aspens for it.
NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
We have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: peanuts, sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, almonds, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.
Please do check any cereal bars to make sure they don't contain traces of these products. We have a child in school who has had extremely severe reactions and we want to all we can to avoid this happening in school. Thank you for your support.
Swimming
Please can all children with long hair wear a swimming cap if possible, as we are already finding a lot of hair in the filters! If you don't have a swimming cap, please ensure long hair is plaited rather than just tied back as this reduces stray hair. Thank you.
Friday Assemblies
A reminder that parents are welcome to stay on a Friday for our Celebration Assembly.
*Please note that these may need to be cancelled at short notice depending on the weather. Even light rain will mean we can't have instruments outside. Thank you for your understanding.*
New Speed Limit In Bourn
Highways England has approved a new 20mph speed limit in Bourn covering:
- All of Caxton End
- The lower half of Alms Hill extending along the High Street to Gills Hill – i.e. just after the Caxton Road turning to the where there’s a flashing speed sign on Gills Hill.
- All thorough Hall Close and Riddy Lane.
This will be implemented on Monday 18 July. You may see painted “20” signs on the road – this is where the 20mph roundels will be placed. This is good news which will help to keep children and families safer on the road.

Book Bus Launch!
We are getting closer and closer to our grand opening of the Book Bus on 8 July!
Parents are invited to join us at 11am outside the bus for a 30-minute launch event as part of an exciting day of book-related events for the children. The children will be able to explore the bus during the day and parents will be able to jump on board to have a look later on at the Summer Fete, which is after school on 8 July.
Thank you very much to all the parents who came to help with cataloguing the books for the Bus - just over 1700 books that will soon be on the bus for children to borrow!
Hard work!
We talk to the children a lot about the importance of working hard. We often give out certificates for music exams, gymnastics and dance competitions and all sorts of other activities. Nothing worthwhile is achieved without putting in hard work and effort. The children in our school really understand that they need to work hard to improve at whatever they do. This also requires them to be resilient and think of different ways of working things out. Keep up the hard work, children - you are brilliant!
Friday Assemblies
A reminder that parents are welcome to stay on a Friday for our Celebration Assembly.
*Please note that these may need to be cancelled at short notice depending on the weather. Even light rain will mean we can't have instruments outside. Thank you for your understanding.*
Lost Property
There is a huge amount of lost property in the entrance hall. Unfortunately it is all unnamed so we don't know who to return it to. Please can you check your children's uniform has a name in it - even biro works well - then we can return it to your child! If you know you are missing something, please come and have a look.
Uniform
On PE days, children should wear the school PE kit, not just sports clothes. Tops should be plain black, as should any jogging bottoms or leggings. Shorts can be blue or black. Thank you for your support in keeping our uniform looking smart.

The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Working Hard. More details are on the Class Pages every week.

Etheldreda Project - Success for Bourn!
You may remember that Miss Nutland led a project to design one of a series of wall hangings to be created and displayed in Ely Cathedral. We have heard that our school's design is a winner!
All the winning designs will be made up into wall hangings for St Catherine’s Chapel next year and will form part of an exhibition that will run from 7th July 2023 to 14th July 2023 in St Catherine’s Chapel at the Cathedral.
Here is a reminder of our design. Well done to Miss Nutland and all the children who took part in creating the design.

Platinum Jubilee Day
We have had a wonderful Platinum Jubilee Celebration Day today!
We started the day with a Celebration Assembly, and a parade of crowns and costumes from each class.
We then all sang Land of Hope and Glory and The National Anthem to the accompaniment of the orchestra who have been rehearsing these songs for a number of weeks.
Children then learned more about the Queen in their classes before all joining together for a grand 'street party' lunch on the field.
We planted a commemorative plant in the courtyard- a buddleia which produces beautify purple flowers and attracts butterflies. We think the queen would approve. Alongside this, we buried a time capsule from each class, to be discovered some time in the future!
The cake competition was great fun, with lots of entries being submitted either in photo form or in real life. Thank you to those who donated their cakes to the staffroom - they were very much appreciated (but tasting didn't form part of the judging process!) The winner of the cake competition is Ava, whose crown shaped cake impressed all of us! Runners up were Jessie and Anna.
The were lots of amazing crowns too. Thank you to everyone for taking part in this. Again, it was very hard to choose a winner as there were so many well designed and crafted crowns. All the staff nominated 3 crowns and the overall winner of the crown competition is Poppy, with Annabel and Tristan coming 2nd and 3rd.
Celebrations!
The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Working Hard. More details are on the Class Pages every week.

School Disco!
The first school disco since Covid struck took place yesterday with over 180 children attending. There was lots of excitement and crazy dancing!
Thanks to Catherine, the BSA team and other parent helpers for making this event happen.
Book Bus - Can You Help?
We are now at the exciting point of cataloguing all the lovely new books onto our new library system. This will be done, with the Library company on 8 and 9 June. We are looking for helpers for the morning or afternoon on those days (9-12 or 12.30 - 3pm). It will involve scanning books, so not onerous, but there are a lot of books!
If you would be able to help, please email office@bourn.cambs.sch.uk
Millions of Words!
In the time since we started Accelerated Reader in the Autumn term, children in KS2 at our school have 'officially' read a staggering 110,900,151 words! Of course, the actual number is way more than that! Keep reading everyone..as Dr Seuss once wrote. ' “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
More Jubilee Photos!
We had a street party style lunch on the field!
Each child made a flag for the bunting that was put up on the fences.

A plea from the office - there were a lot of forgotten swimming kits this week which resulted in a lot of worried children and urgent phone calls home. Please check your child's swimming days on the class newsletter.

The Bee Garden
Mrs Tagger has spent a long time deliberating over the many fantastic entries into the Bee Garden competition. So much so, she couldn't choose an overall winner! Therefore, she has chosen to combine the ideas from Hugo in Willow, Driya in Cedar and Joel in Oak Classes. Their ideas will be created next half term. Well done and thank you to all who entered.

Choir for the Queen
St Paul's Cathedral asked schools to create a Choir for the Queen to sing the National Anthem. The children learned this is assemblies over the last couple of weeks and here is our recording of it! WE hope you enjoy it!

Platinum Jubilee Day
We are holding our Jubilee celebration on Friday next week!
The whole school is encouraged to come dressed in red/white/ blue or dressed as royalty. There is a crown competition so it would be lovely to see as many crowns as possible - the more elaborate the better!
We will be starting the day with a grand celebration assembly and a Crown Parade, as well as singing traditional songs to the orchestra.
Children will be learning about the Queen and taking part in fun activities in the afternoon.
We will be having a traditional street party lunch with a long, long table on the field complete with table cloths and bunting. Children can either bring a packed lunch or order one through Aspens.
It would be great if any parents or grandparents were happy to record a short video of them talking about their experience of the Diamond Jubilee, the Golden Jubilee, the Silver Jubilee or the coronation. Please send these to Miss Ivory.
We will also be holding our very own Platinum Pudding Competition. Your child or children can choose whether to make or design their own pudding and bring/email a picture of the pudding into school to give to Miss Ivory. These will then be placed on display and we will vote for the winning pudding.
If you fancied sending the real thing in for staff to 'test' do feel free! (If you do, please make sure there are no nuts, thank you)
Fingers crossed for a sunny day!
Swimming
Swimming starts next week for Oak, Acorn, Willow and Hazel.
Thank you to those parents who have offered to help supervise the children in Key Stage 1. We really appreciate your support.
Please can all children come in wearing PE kit, just in case we have to cancel swimming for any reason (weather, pool issues etc) in which case they will have an alternative PE lesson. Please ensure that any child with long hair has it tied back (or in a swimming hat) for swimming and ensure earrings are removed.
Suncream
As the weather improves, it is really helpful if children come to school with suncream already applied. This should last the whole day unless they are swimming.
If your child is swimming in the morning, they can re-apply suncream afterwards before lunch play. please show your child how much to use and how to apply it as staff aren't able to do this for them.
Please can all suncreams be named clearly. Please don't send children in with suncream if they don't need it as they love putting lots on....!

Rock UK
This week, the children in Oak Class have been at their residential at Rock UK. They have had a wonderful time and have learnt a range of new skills from kayaking to abseiling to archery! They have also learnt a lot about themselves, how to embrace new challenges and support others. The children enjoyed lots of exciting and exhilarating experiences such as the climbing tower, the new aerial adventure course and the Big Zip Wire!
Parking
I have been contacted by neighbours living on Riddy Lane letting me know that parents have parked across their drives. Please don't do this, even for a short period of time.
Parents are welcome to park at the car park at Manor Farm if there is nowhere else to park.

Near Accident
This week, there was a near accident when a child ran across the road without looking when coming to school. Thankfully the car was driving slowly so was able to stop just in time. Please can all parents talk to their children about how to cross the road safely and model this. This includes NOT crossing in front of or behind the bus and minibus which is a dangerous place to cross.
Year 5 Road Safety Patrol
This week, Ella, Daisy and Monica have been on duty. They are also worried that children aren't looking both ways when crossing. They have spoken to all the children in assembly about this to remind them.
Swimming
Swimming starts next week for Cedar, Rosewood and Cherry and 23 May for Oak, Acorn, Willow and Hazel.
We still really need helpers for Willow and Hazel classes. If you are able to help, please let Debs know. Many thanks.

Goodbye to Mrs Taylor
We said a fond farewell to Jo Taylor, who is leaving us today. She has been at the school for nearly 10 years and has had such a positive influence on hundreds of children during this time. Children in Willow and Hazel Classes had made special cards and children in the other classes contributed to a big book of memories and thanks. Jo has been an integral part of the school and I know we will all miss her hugely.
Year 5 Road Safety Patrol
This week Molly, Eliza and Seth have been on duty. During our Friday assembly today, the spoke to all the children (and parents) about the importance of always looking both ways when crossing the road, and also about staying under the speed limit when driving in roads around the school. Did you know the speed limit on Riddy Lane is 20mph?
Big Bourn Bee Challenge
Mrs Tagger is holding a competition for children to design a bee friendly space for one of our allotment raised beds. The winning design will be brought to life by the winner and The Green Team! All children have been sent an application form and they need to be with Mrs Tagger by 13 May
Planting Potatoes
Children in all year groups have been caring for 'potato babies' over the last few weeks. Green Team reps were responsible for finding the best possible spot for the potatoes to begin their ‘chitting’ process in the classroom. Chitting is the process of forcing seed potatoes into growth before they are planted out.
Potatoes chit best in a light space in a frost free environment. Our windowsills were a perfect spot!
Once the potatoes had a few strong shoots, it was time to plant them in our school allotment. Over the next few days Green Team reps will be responsible for earthing the potatoes. This process protects developing potatoes from the light which turns them green and poisonous.

Assembly starts at 9.05am. Thank you to our Year 6 'Greeters' who ensure the parents are signed in and shown to their seats.
*Please note that these may need to be cancelled at short notice depending on the weather. Even light rain will mean we can't have instruments outside. Thank you for your understanding.*

Bikeability!
Children in Year 3 and 4 took part in training in how to ride a bike safely - we have never had so many bikes in our bike shed!
Well done to everyone who took part. It would be great to see even more children cycling to school!

Remembering Lyla
It is now a year since Lyla Blue Glennen died. The children in Hazel class spent yesterday afternoon remembering their friend Lyla. They all wore purple ribbons on their wrists and went out to the cherry blossom tree where they recalled special memories of Lyla. They said a prayer and sang a song whilst we set off a purple balloon. They then spent time in the Nature Reserve, creating environmental art with the theme of a picture for Lyla. The children in the class all took home a glazed heart that they had made in art lessons.
Year 5 Road Safety Patrol
This week William, Karl and Ned have been on duty. This week, you may have noticed them holding up banners (designed by Year 5 children) reminding everyone to drive slowly and showing the safest place to cross the road safely.
PE Uniform
Children come to school in PE uniform on the days they have PE lessons. The PE uniform includes a plain black sweatshirt or hooded top and plain black PE bottoms. None of these items need to have the school logo, but they do need to be plain and black - no patterns, no other colours please.
Sun Cream and Allergies
Please be aware that this sunscreen now contains almond oil. We have children in school with nut allergies. Please do not use this sunscreen on your child before they come to school or send this one in with your child.
Celebrations!
