8 September 2023

Welcome Back!
The children have settled brilliantly into their new classes and new routines, with the Year 6 setting an excellent example as positive role models to the rest of the school.
A quick snapshot of the learning happening in each class before break today!
Parent Meetings
All parents are invited to the Welcome to the Year Ahead Meeting on Thursday 14 September. We will start with a 30 minute session in the hall and this will be followed by 2 sessions in the classroom.
Please note, Acorn Class parents only - the first classroom session will be 5.30-6pm, and the second will be 6.30 - 7pm.
Phonics Information Evening
On 28 September from 6-7pm, we will be holding a Phonics information evening, to introduce parents to our new Phonics Scheme, Little Wandle. There are quite a few changes to how we teach and when books will be coming home, so please do try to attend if your child is in Acorn, Willow or Hazel classes. All other parents are also welcome to attend. Please book a place here:

House Captains
Children in Year 6 have the opportunity to put themselves forward to be House Captains. They are currently preparing their applications and voting will take place soon.
Getting Ready for Cycling Lessons!
At Bourn, we view cycling as an important life skill. Cycling is part of our PE curriculum, from teaching children to ride balance bikes in reception, Bikeability in Years 3,4 and 5, and cycling lessons in PE. Mr French is currently servicing all the bikes to make sure they are safe! Children in Year 5 and 6 will be doing cycling first - please remind your child to bring in their helmet!
Bourn to Run - Sunday 17 September
A reminder to sign up to Bourn to Run - registrations close today. Lots of the children are already signed up to the 3k race and lots of those not already signed up are really keen to join! Online registration ends today but you can also register on the day.
It is also a really fun day, so even if you don't want to run - come along and cheer on the runners and enjoy the atmosphere!
To register click here https://bourntorun.com/
This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the school, and provides funds to buy things to improve the experiences of your children whilst they are at Bourn
CB23 Schools Careers Convention
The Network BC23 Schools run a highly successful Careers Convention for Year 5 pupils (and year 6 pupils this year) in all of the primary schools in Network CB 23 and it is held at The Great Barn in Bourn!
The aim of the day is to introduce the children to a wide range of career options and help them to make connections between learning and “working life” whilst still at primary school. We hope that by doing so, we will inspire them to value learning, open their minds to new possibilities and help them raise their own ambitions.
The organiser is looking for new exhibitors for this year’s convention. They are keen to have a wide range of careers and jobs; from Accountants to Zoologist, Bakers to Yoga instructors, Lawyers to Engineers, pilots, TV engineers, photographers, HGV drivers to Surveyors and everyone in between.
If you can help or know of someone who would be perfect, then please contact Jill Foster at the email address below and she can provide more details and an exhibitor’s form. Information about the event in previous years is on the Network CB23 website. www.networkcb23.com/careers-convention.html

Traffic and Parking
Yesterday there was a serious situation whereby a fire engine was stuck as a result of inconsiderate parking. The outcome of this could have been disastrous.
I am asking all parents, again, to think about the safety of others when you park. Do not park in the following places, even if you are late or there are no other places nearby to park:
- in or behind the bus bay
- on double yellow or yellow zig zag lines
- across people's driveways (even slightly)
- where there is a dropped kerb
- the private road up to the residential garages
-on corners
Please do let the school know if you see parking on these areas, so we can remind individuals as necessary.
Parents are encouraged to park at the Manor Barn car park and walk from there. It's only a short walk and the fewer cars we have around school the safer it is for everyone, especially your children.
If You Have a Concern
From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.
Absence Reporting
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email
absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Please remember to cancel any pre- ordered lunches if your child is off sick or you may be charged by Aspens for it.
Contact Details
It is really important that we have more than one phone number we can ring if your child is ill at school. Please can you check your details on the MCAS app and check the numbers are up to date and there are back up numbers if the priority number is unavailable. Thank you.
NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
A reminder that we have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: peanuts, sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, almonds, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.
Lost Property Prevention
PLEASE label your child's clothes, bags and lunchboxes. Children regularly leave their things lying about, but we quickly reunite them when the things are named. We really want to avoid the huge pile of unnamed clothes we ended up with at the end of last year. Biro or Sharpies work well for writing names on labels.
Message from Parents' School Preference Adviser
My name is Tiff Christian and I am the Parents' School Preference Adviser for Cambridgeshire, as part of the SENDIASS team. I have recently been appointed after a long period of vacancy and would like to introduce myself to you and your families.
The service offers families advice and support when applying for schools, either when admissions open for transition on the 11th September 2023 or for in-year applications. I am able to advise how the transfer and admissions process works, as well as supporting the understanding of policies and criteria for different schools. Also, I can support in the appeals process and issues concerning transport.

Thank you!
A huge thank you to all the parents who have helped the school over the past year. Without your help, we would not have been able to offer the same level of experiences and support to the children.
Specifically, we would like to thank:
- parents who helped with swimming, and who gave up their time to attend resuscitation training
- parents who have come on our school trips as an extra pair of hands (and eyes)
- parents who have offered to be Parent Helpers this year and who have listened to children read, or practice their maths
- parents who have transported children from school to various locations for different trips, visits and events
- parents who have come in to share their expertise with the children during events such as Science Week
- Year 6 parents who created the Year Book and organised a fun Year 6 Leavers' BBQ for the children
- parents who have come in and helped with activities such as cooking and other DT activities
Thank you to the BSA
A huge thanks to the BSA again this year. After Covid, and under Catherine the new chair, the BSA is thriving with a Committee of active and dedicated parents. I would like to thank Catherine, the Committee and all the parents that have helped with specific events over the last year. The BSA raises valuable funds for the school, which is especially important now that budgets are tighter than ever.
Goodbye to Our Year 6 Children!
Today is the day when we say our last goodbye to the children in Year 6. They have been in primary school for 7 years and have grown beyond recognition from the little Acorn children who started their school life in 2016 (although looking at the Yearbook, some of them still have exactly the same cheeky grins as they did back then!)
The Leavers' assembly was a wonderful and moving celebration of each and every one of them. We know that they will go from here, into their secondary education, taking forward everything they have learned and which has turned them into the fine young people that they are today. They will continue to work hard, and be open minded, generous and kind hearted in all they do.
We will miss them a lot, and look forward to visits in the future!
Shackleton House Winners!
Well done to Shackleton House for winning the House Cup this year! Here are the House Captains with the cup!
More Goodbyes!
We also wish a fond farewell to 3 members of staff.
Miss Bryan joined us for this year and has worked in Year 6 and with individual children. She has been a great support for the children and has been a real asset to the school during this time.
Miss Riberaud is leaving us to take up a new post as Head of Modern Foreign Languages. She has taught Year 6 this year and has been brilliant at steering the children through their SATS, the residential trip and their epic performance of Treasure Island!
Miss Ivory is leaving us after four Years teaching Year 4 at Bourn. Her caring and nurturing approach has brought out the best in the children she has taught. Her kind and caring nature, and enthusiasm for learning - and reading in particular has enabled the children to believe in themselves. We wish her all the best for the future.
End of Year Picnic
It was lovely to see so many parents, friends and families for our end of year picnic. Thank you for joining us.
See You in September!
School starts again on Tuesday 5 September. We look forward to seeing you then! Have a wonderful summer!

Year 5 DT Week
Children in Year 5 made pizzas this week, with expert advice from Jules in the kitchen.
Science Week
As part of science week, we have had many visitors, many of them parents, who talked to the children about the scientific aspects of their work. The children have learned from Parminder Ruprah about making chocolate, made models of DNA chains with Isabel Nett, learned about making proteins with Clare Rebbeck and about radiation and X-Rays with Diane Witney. We also had a visit from Chris Wakefield from the Cambridge University Archaeolgical Unit to talk about archaeology and who showed the children many of their finds - some of which we got to keep in school! Rachel Thorley from Churchill College Cambridge also taught the older children about making electrical circuits.
Spotlight on SEND
Our Education Inclusion Family Advisor, Samantha Stacey, has provided us with the EIFA Summer Holiday Programme 2023, which consists of three online workshops aimed at parents/carers and families who would like to learn more about topics such as challenging behaviour, sibling rivalry and what effect parenting styles can have upon children and young people. Please see booking information on the poster.
Year 6 Performance
Last night, Oak Class put on their production of Treasure Island. The audience were wowed by their singing, acting and dancing and the sheer enjoyment of all the children as they performed! It was wonderful to see what confident and courageous young people they have become. We will miss then hugely but know they will go onto further great things in their secondary education.

Developing Resilience
Encourage children to talk about people they know who have overcome adversity including people in the public eye, and people in their own family and community. Encourage stories about a diverse range of people, including people from non-English speaking backgrounds, people from a range of professions and people who have experienced different types of adversity (e.g. natural disasters, political oppression).
Explain to children that facing challenges in life can be useful – they help us grow as a person and give us knowledge and skills that make us better prepared the next time something challenges us.

Year 6 at Rock UK
Year 6 have had a fantastic week on their residential trip to Rock UK. They have challenged themselves day after day with rock climbing, abseiling, high ropes, kayaking, biking and so much more! This is a highlight of the year and we always see children achieving so much more than they ever thought they could! Thank you to Miss Riberaud, Miss Simmons and Miss Bryan who gave given up their entire week - without willing members of staff, these residential trips could not take place.
Snacks and Drinks
Please could you ensure that any snacks that children have for playtime are healthy. Please do not send in crisps, biscuits or sweets.
Please could you also ensure that children have water only in their water bottles.
Developing Resilience - Be a Supportive Role Model
Adults in children's lives are such important role models, so the more they can model resilient behaviours the better. Be calm and consistent. Admit to your mistakes and how you can do better next time, The more positive adult connections and child has, the more resilient they will be. This article has lots more information.
Online Safety Newsletter
This week it is all about Anime. Many people assume that anime is safe for the children because it's animation. However a large amount is actually geared towards adults, often featuring swearing, graphic violence and nudity.
It is easy for children to get drawn into anime through many crossovers in video games.
If your child likes anime, please do read the separate newsletter to find out more.
Celebrating Differences Day
This week, the children were celebrating differences of all kinds, both in class and in a special assembly. They wore their favourite clothes today as a visible symbol of how everyone is different and likes different things!

Cedar Class Assembly
Cedar Class assembly today was all about The Ink Garden of Brother Theophane, one of the texts studied in Year 3. It is set in a monastery where the monks live, study and work. The children made dyes from various plant materials and used them to dye fabrics. The children also recreated the story of Brother Theophane and created a fantastic film - acted, directed and filmed by the children themselves!
Acceptable Use of IT
Please ensure you read the 'Acceptable use of the internet: agreement for parents and carers' sent out, via email, by Miss Hensleigh yesterday. In order to confirm your agreement, please indicate this on the My Child At School App.
Developing Resilience - Show Your Child How to Face Fears
If your child avoids anything scary, they'll never gain the confidence they need to handle feeling uncomfortable. Whether your child is afraid of the dark, or they are terrified to meet new people, help your child face their fears one small step at a time.
Cheer them on, praise their efforts, and reward them for being brave and they'll learn that they're a capable kid who can handle stepping outside their comfort zone.
Online Safety Newsletter
This week, the newsletter is about what Parents and Carers need to know about influencers.
Top Tip: reinforce your child's awareness that real life isn't as picture perfect as they see on TV, magazines or on social media, where they only show the best versions of themselves.
Celebrating Differences Day
On Friday 9th June we are holding a 'Celebrating Differences' day. During the day, children will cover a range of learning points including:
- - I am starting to understand that sometimes people make assumptions about boys and girls (stereotypes)
- - I understand that everyone's family is different
- - I understand what racism is
- - I can tell you what bullying is
- - I understand that it is OK to be different from other people and to be friends with them
Pupils in KS2 will also learn about visible differences and the effect that stereotypes in film and on television, can have on people who look different.
Please note: this will also be a non-uniform day with the theme of 'Wear One of Your Favourite Outfits'.
If you have any questions about this, please contact Miss Hensleigh.

A huge well done to all our Year 6 children this week, who have taken their SATS tests! They had tests in Grammar, Spelling, Reading and 3 Maths papers! They have worked hard and put a lot of effort into doing their best - and that is all anyone can ask from them. They have been brilliant.

Developing Resilience - Prepare your child for the path...
The old saying goes, 'prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child'. As parents, most of us know that preparing our kids for the path is more important than preparing the path for them, but it is so hard to watch them struggle. We know we shouldn’t make things easy, but we jump to the conclusion that smoothing the path makes their self-esteem stronger.
Edward Hallowell, author of The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness says:
It sounds counter-intuitive, but the best thing you can do for your child’s long-term happiness may be to stop trying to keep them happy in the short-term.
The parenting author, Elmore explains that wise parents “inoculate” their kids. He uses the example of travelling to a developing nation that requires immunizations. The traveller gets inoculated, which actually means that a small dose of the disease is injected into the body so that the body builds up enough antibodies to fight off the disease when the traveler arrives in a foreign country.
This is a picture of what we must do for our kids. In order for them to face adversity well, we must introduce small doses of it early on. In order for them to possess the discipline necessary for hard work or stressful jobs, we must expose them to challenges in smaller amounts so they are ready to face larger ones when the time comes. In a sense, they build up antibodies. They become inwardly strong and prepared for what’s ahead.

This week, Year 3 and Year 4 have taken part in Bikeability training with external coaches from outspokentraining.co.uk. They did really well, with an instructor commenting that they are 'talented cyclists.'
Children in Key Stage 2 also have cycling lessons as part of the PE curriculum.
Earlier this year, Year 5 completed a four day cycling course.
If you would be interested in becoming a cycling instructor, please click here for more details.
Acorn Class Sponsored Bike and Scooter Ride
This week, Acorn children brought in their bikes and scooters to ride as part of their sponsored ride. They rode 10 laps of the playground and did really well. They have raised over £300, which will be used to pay for the Living Eggs (an incubator and eggs which will hatch into chicks) If there is any money left over, the children will decide what they would like to spend this on (within reason!)
Year 5 Maths Challenge
This week, a team of 4 children: Yusuf, Logan S, Max and Vishnu represented the school in the Year 5 Maths Challenge which was held in Histon. They worked well together as a team and really enjoyed the experience - well done!
Developing Resilience - Go Outside!
Exercise helps strengthen the brain and make it more resilient to stress and adversity. While team sports are the most popular method of consistent exercise for kids, all children really need is time spent outdoors engaging in a physical activity. If team sports don’t appeal to your child, encourage them or introduce them to cycling, playing tag, or even just swinging at the playground. These are all great ways for children to engage in free play that also builds resilience.
Resilience helps kids navigate the obstacles they encounter as they grow. It’s not possible to avoid stress, but being resilient is one of the best ways to cope with it.
Celebrations!
The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Resilience. More details are on the Class Pages every week.

Spotlight on SEND
Reading is such an important skill for children but we do understand that reading at home can be tricky. If you are finding it hard to share books, why not try sharing audiobooks together, possibly in the car on journeys? You could also watch CBeebies bedtime stories together here or try the Oxford Owl website, which has advice and support, games and activities and free reading resources for 3-11 year olds.
Online Safety
The Online Safety newsletter today is all about iPads. Setting limits on iPad use is essential.
The 'Downtime' function allows you to tell the iPad to lock itself (you don't have to be the bad guy!!) at certain periods ie mealtimes, bed time etc. The 'App Limits' removes access to certain apps once they have been used for a specified length of time each day. The iPad can display a reminder when these limits are nearly reached, letting your child mentally prepare for the end of their gaming or viewing time.
Year 4 Photography
As part of the Computing curriculum, year 4 have been studying Digital Art and have produced some interesting images. They have also had a visit from Jean-Luc Benazet - a professional photographer, to learn more skills and tricks of the trade! Thank you, Jean-Luc.

Remembering Lyla
Today we had a special assembly to remember Lyla Blue Glennan, who died two years ago. Children and staff wore the things that Lyla especially loved - the colour purple, fancy dress, unicorns, sequins and dinosaurs. The children in her class spent some time at the cherry blossom tree that is planted in her memory and let go of an eco friendly balloon. They then went on to our amazing Book Bus where Mrs Balls read the story Only One You.
Book Bus - Phase 2
After the success of the bus itself, we are now fundraising towards the landscaping of the outside space so that in the summer the children can take their reading in to a beautiful garden area. We also need to get some blinds for the top deck windows for those who still wish to enjoy the bus (it gets very hot!) We would like for the bus to be carbon neutral and aim to get green energy via solar panels or a wind turbine (mini of course). We also want to diversify the range of books we have available for the children - we still have lots of shelf space that we would love to fill with some great stories that represent the children reading them!
If you would like to donate, please click the link here.
Developing Resilience - Resilient Parenting
Resilience relies on how we think of our lives. Stress is defined as the feeling that something is more than we can handle. If we think of challenges as something we can overcome, then we can overcome them more easily. The perception makes a difference.
Watch out for using the words 'always' and 'never' when facing challenges. Try to notice when you use these words and ask yourself, 'is this true?' Stop your assumptions and predictions for a while and see what changes.
This information is taken from the following article which is very interesting and easy to read - How to Be a Resilient Parent.

Online Safety
Every week, Miss Hensleigh sends out an Online Safety Newsletter full of helpful information about how to keep children safe online.
Children may appear safe when they are in the comfort of their own bedroom, but when 97% of children have access to the internet and 67% of 8-11 year olds playing games online, they can quickly and easily come across content that you would not want them to see. Today's email gives advice for parents from National Online Safety about ways of keeping your child safe.

Goodbye Mrs Armitage
We said a fond farewell today to Mrs Armitage. She has been at the school for 16 years and has built up the orchestra and music teaching in the school to the wonderful position we are now in. She has been dedicated to the school and was instrumental in raising the £12,000 needed to buy our grand piano, which is played every day in school. Mrs Armitage has inspired hundreds of children to play and listen to music and her passion for music has really rubbed off on all of us! As one of the children wrote in her card. 'Roses are red, violets are blue, when I think of music, I think of you!' We will all miss you very much, Mrs Armitage!
Book Bus - 50/50 Walk
Tomorrow, Lyla's family and friends are taking part in a sponsored 21 mile walk to raise funds for the Book Bus. We are aiming to develop some of the ground near the bus into a reading Garden!

Developing Resilience - Being a Resilient Parent
"Assuming that parenting worry is ever going away only makes us feel worse. We cannot and should not aim to control everything. Rather, we can shift our perspective to accept that stressful things happen over and over again. When we try to fix everything we face and reach for a perfect picture of happiness, we undermine our best intentions. The perception that parenting or any other part of life can be anything other than imperfect and changing pushes us far from our most skillful and resilient selves."
Read the full, and very interesting article here.
Grandparents' Tea Party
Yesterday, our grandparents were entertained by individual musicians and the Bourn School orchestra! Whilst they ate scones and jam and drank cups of tea, they were able to listen to children playing drums, piano, flute, clarinet. guitar, and cello. There was also an opportunity to sing along! Thank you to all the children who played, and also to Mrs Armitage and Mrs Verwoerd who organised the concert and co-ordinated the whole event. Thanks too to the parent helpers who helped set up and serve tea. A lovely time was had by all!

Year 3&4 Performance
This week, Cedar and Rosewood Classes performed their Easter Extravaganza of Songs from the Musicals! A packed house was entertained by singing, dancing and acting and the energy and enthusiasm of the children for their performance was fantastic. Many children sang solo parts, which they found nerve wracking before hand, but they did it! Unfortunately there were a number of children who were off sick for the Wednesday performance but they were still an important part of the team effort of this performance. Well done to all involved in this production.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Keep Things in Perspective
Even when your child is facing very painful events, help them look at the situation in a broader context and keep a long-term perspective. Although your child may be too young to consider a long-term look on their own, help them see that there is a future beyond the current situation and that the future can be good. An optimistic and positive outlook can enable children to see the good things in life and keep going even in the hardest times. Use history to show that life moves forward after bad events, and the worst things are specific and temporary.
Friday Celebration Assembly
I am always happy to give out certificates and awards on a Friday. If your child has achieved a belt in Karate, passed a music exam, swum 10 metres or won a rosette in show jumping, please do send in the certificates to me and I will award them in assembly.

Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Effort is Hard Work
Research shows that children who persist and excel recognize that success comes from hard work and practice, not luck or money or genetics. If children believe that performance is due to effort, they will be less likely to give up and will work harder when the going gets tough.
Teach your child the 10,000-Hour Rule: “Did you know that studies found that the best artists, musicians, swimmers and skaters practiced at least 10,000 hours, or ten years, to reach their success? Success is all a matter of how hard you work.”
Mid Year Reports
The Mid Year reports will be coming home today. There is a section on Learning Behaviour and Mindset. My Headteacher's comment is related to how hard each child works in school. It is almost entirely the case that when a child is achieving well they also work very hard.
Some children have excellent Effort scores, but still find work difficult and may be below Age Related Expectations. If this is the case for your child, please praise their effort above everything else. Some children need to practise more than others to achieve the same result, (and this often feels very unfair), but we must all give the same message. It is ONLY through hard work that they will improve and if they work hard, they WILL improve. It might take a lot longer, and they might feel like giving up, but please keep reminding them that they will get there in the end.

Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Using Courage
When your child is nervous about doing something, but you know it is within their capability, use the phrase, "Face your fears and do it anyway". This is a phrase we use in school with children when they are nervous about something - perhaps speaking or playing in assembly, acting or singing in a play or even putting their hand up in class. Once they have done it, praise them for their courage and ask them how they feel now. They will always be pleased with themselves!
Seacole House Cake Sale 10 March
Today is Seacole Day, and children came to school wearing yellow or wearing medical outfits in recognition of Mary Seacole's work as a nurse in the Crimean War. The money raised today is being donated to the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity the charity chosen by the House Captains.
Grace and William, Seacole House Captains did a very informative presentation to the whole school about Mary Seacole. They also organised a cake sale after school with cakes handmade by themselves. Well done William and Grace!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
This week, the children were really lucky to have had a sneak preview of the Bourn Players production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! We listened to Truly Scrumptious (Maddie and William's mum), Caractacus Potts (Molly and Josh's dad) and Jemima (Molly in Year 6) sing 3 of the most famous songs from the film. The children absolutely loved it. The performances are on 23rd, 24th and 25th March in the Performance Hall at Comberton Village College.
Year 5 Bikeability
This week was very cold, windy and there was even snow - and this was the week when Year 5 children did their Bikeability training. After their session on Wednesday, many of the children got so cold and fed up and were on the verge of quitting the course. However, our Year 5s are tougher than that! After warming up and a pep talk or two on being resilient and wearing more layers they turned up again the next day and completed the course! We are so proud of all of them for not giving in and completing their course. Red Nose Day
On Friday 17th March, it is Red Nose Day. As a school we will be raising money for comic relief. On the 17th, children can come to school dressed in something red. It can be something very small like a red bracelet or a red homemade mask or it can be a whole red outfit! During the school day the children will also be taking part in a quiz within their classrooms.
To donate, your child can bring £1 into school on Friday 17th or you can scan the QR codes on the comic relief posters, which have been put up on some of the doors and windows of the school, including the office door.

Please do take a look.

Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: 'Safe' Mistakes
Make a point of letting your child make 'safe' mistakes. It is sometimes hard not to step in but it is important not to protect children from every trip, fall or mistake. Once a mistake has been made, you can help your child develop resilience by helping them recover and learn from it. For instance, if your child breaks something that belongs to them, help them through their feelings of sadness/anger and think about what they have learnt - rather than replacing it or mending it for them or saying it doesn't matter.
Spotlight on Support Services - Emotional Support for Young Children
There is a lot of helpful information here on how to support young (and not so young) children with regulating their emotions. Research shows that children who understand their emotions are able to form stronger friendships, calm themselves quickly when they are upset, perform better in school, have fewer negative thoughts and can regulate emotions.

We will be holding an interactive workshop for parents on Thursday 2 March from 7 - 9pm. Life Education Centre
The 'Life Bus' is currently with us and most children have now had their sessions, although some will be going on the bus on Monday. The children have been very enthusiastic and have enjoyed meeting Harold the Giraffe! Different year groups have focussed on different topics:
'We learned that we are all different and there's not a single person in the world that's the same.'
'We learned how alcohol, cigarettes and vapes affects people's bodies'
'We thought about right and wrong decicions in the future about alcohol and smoking. We learned how to say no.'
'We learned about how to keep our bodies and brains healthy and how to get better when you are poorly,'
'We learned that medicine can be dangerous if you take too much or take it when you don't need it.'
Update from School Council
The school council came up with the idea of re-opening the school tuck shop. The school council would also like to provide each class with the opportunity of having a low maintenance class pet (e.g. snail, butterflies, stick insects) as year 3 have fish, and the running of the tuck shop would help raise some funds towards the purchase of these and the accessories that go with them.
The school councillors designed a survey to find out other pupils’ opinions about the reopening of the tuck shop and to find out if positive, what items children in the school would like to purchase from a tuck shop.
The School Council ran a Tuck Shop this week which was very popular. There will be a Tuck Shop Week during the last week of each half term.
Thank you to the School Councillors and Miss Nutland for all the work on setting this up.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Not Yet is Fine!
Not yet is fine! The Power of Yet is a key growth mindset message so it is important to break it down in order to acknowledge what it really means. Practise, practise and more practise… and then sometimes even more practise. Even after lots of effort and working hard, your child may still find something tricky and them not being able to do it yet… is fine. Sometimes some people need more time to learn spellings or times tables and as long as they just keep practising, they will get there. If your child ever gets upset about it taking them a long time to understand or remember something, reassure them that one day their effort will pay off in the end.
Spotlight on Support Services - SENDIASS
Do you need any information, advice, or support (IAS) to help with your child’s special educational needs or disability (SEND)? It also makes it easier for drivers to see where people are crossing. Thank you.
Mental Health Week
Next week is Mental Health Week and Taskmaster Education has teamed up with Place2Be to create an extremely exciting week of activities for children across the country. We are one of the many schools joining in with these activities. There will be lots going on in, including every class taking part in a week-long treasure hunt! The Taskmaster Treasure Hunt involves the children being given a clue each day and at the end of the week there will be a chance for them to submit their final answers and potentially be in with a chance of being added to the Taskmaster Hall of Fame. As well, in true Taskmaster style, the children will also be given a task to do each day, which will link with the theme of mental health week. We are all very excited for the week ahead and we look forward to sharing lots of pictures of all the activities, with you, next week!

The 'Life Bus' will be visiting Bourn on Thursday and Friday next week and the following Monday. Each class will have a slot over those days.
There are also opportunities for parents to go on board and find out more about what their children will be learning. These sessions are:
Thursday 2nd February from 8.55 to 9.15 and Monday 6th February from 8.55 to 9.15.
As there is limited space on the bus, booking is required. Please go onto My Child at School (MCAS) and book under 'Clubs'.
World Thinking Day 22 February
World Thinking Day, formerly Thinking Day, is celebrated annually on 22 February by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. It is also celebrated by Scout and Guide organizations around the world. To support this, we would like to invite all children at the school who are members of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs or Scouts to wear their uniforms on that day.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Stepping outside the comfort zone.
We love seeing children’s love of reading blossoming as they progress through the school and as children become more confident readers they tend to begin to find their favourite type of books. This is great and we love helping children find books that they will enjoy but it is also important that they continue to challenge themselves with reading so every now and again we might ask those who love story books to try out a non-fiction book. When visiting a local library or whilst book-shopping, encourage your child to look at new or different books, as well as the ones they know they already like.

The House Captains, Ella and Molly are organising a quiz for children in school They are also asking children to wear purple and/or green on that day, in recognition of the suffragette colours and their long fight to enable women to have the same democratic rights as men. Please can children bring in £1 on that day, which will go towards the charity that the House Captains have nominated, the Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity.
Lost Property
We have had to get a bigger container for lost property as there is now so much of it. It is in the entrance hall so please do come and have a look if your child has lost an item. All these items are unnamed - a named item doesn't stay lost for long.
From now onwards, any items of clothing still left at the end of each half term will either be donated to the BSA (uniform with logo) and other items will be taken to charity shops.
Please name everything - click here for suppliers of name labels.
Top tip - attach gloves to elastic and thread through coat sleeves so you child can't lose their gloves!
Children's Activities outside School
Keep sending in your photos of what your children do outside school. We will be putting the display up next week, so if you'd like your child to be part of it, please email photos to Debs on office@bourn.cambs.sch.uk
Young Voices!
Year 5 had an amazing time at the O2 Arena on Monday, singing with thousands of other children from schools across the country. They sang and danced the evening away from their seats which were so high that a few almost got vertigo. It was a long day, and a late night but the children and adults loved the whole experience. They sang some of the songs for the whole school in assembly today. (Apologies for the wrong date for the assembly being in the news letter - my fault entirely.)

Public Speaking Competition
Yesterday, 4 pupils from Bourn took part in a Public Speaking Competition held at Peterhouse College at Cambridge University. Adrian and Miriam spoke on the subject, 'If you could live in one season only, what would it be and why?' with Adrian favouring summer and Miriam preferring winter.
Rishabh and Isabel spoke on the topic of, 'You can invite anyone in the world to lunch with you - who would it be and why?'. Rishabh would invite the author Rick Riordan and Isabel would invite Banksy, the mysterious graffiti artist.
They had to speak on stage in a lecture theatre in front of an audience of parents, teachers and children of 10 other schools. It was a nerve wracking occasion, but all the children used their Bourn value of courage and were brilliant! Congratulations to Rishabh, who was Runner Up in the Year 5&6 Category!
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week:
Being a growth mindset role model! When a meal doesn’t go to plan or a drawing you did doesn’t look quite right rather than say “I can’t cook Shepherds Pie” or “I'm rubbish at art”, focus on the effort and the fact that you are learning something too by saying “I’m finding it quite tricky to draw this cat, I think I need a bit more practice.”
Gong Xi Fa Cai (Mandarin) Gong Hey Fat Choy (Cantonese)
Happy New Year to our families that celebrate the Chinese New Year! Each Chinese year is associated with an animal sign according to the Chinese zodiac cycle, which features 12 animal signs in the order Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. 2023 is the year of the rabbit. What year were you born in?
Spotlight on Support Services - Pinpoint
Pinpoint is a local Parent Carer Forum and hub for information, signposting and events for all things SEND. No formal diagnosis is required to access support from Pinpoint – a child may be on a waiting list, accessing services, had a referral turned down, or just be struggling. Pinpoint hold weekly virtual coffee mornings called 'Tii Hubs' during term times where parents/carers will always find a friendly face to chat to and can meet others in similar situations. They also hold professionally supported workshops and events including sessions around autism, ADHD, sleep, anxiety, mental health and more! Full listings of their upcoming FREE sessions can be found on the Pinpoint website.

Parking
Please could all parents who drive to the school avoid parking across the drives of the school's neighbours, and most definitely never park on someone else's drive. Thank you.
Kids Smartwatches
There are lots of fun watches for children that are also have the capability for electronic games, taking photos, taking videos, messaging and making calls.
We do not allow children to have mobile phones, cameras or electronic games in school, as part of our approach to keeping all children safe, so it follows that devices that have this capability can also not be allowed in school. Please can you ensure that if your child has a watch with these functions, they do not wear it to school. Many thanks for your understanding.
Year 4 Needlework
The whole of Rosewood Class was nominated for a certificate this week as they all worked so well on their needlework, persevering through the difficulties. Driya and Simone produced these beautiful samples.
Children's Activities outside School
We will be putting up a display board of all the things that children do outside of school. Please do let us know what they get up to and send us a photo. The ones we have seen so far have been brilliant! Please email to Debs on office@bourn.cambs.sch.uk

Life Education Centre
At the start of February, the school will have a 3 day visit from the Cambridgeshire Life Education Centre, who work with Coram Life Education, a national charity serving the needs of children in the UK. They deliver ‘life skills’ based, primary drug prevention programmes to young people aged between 3-11. Each year group follows a carefully developed, age-appropriate programme, which are delivered in a high-tech, interactive mobile classroom (below).
If you would like to see what each class will cover, please visit their webpage here. There will be opportunities for parents and carers to visit the Life Bus too - more details nearer the time.
Huge thanks to the BSA who are funding this, which would otherwise have cost £8 per child.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Learning from Mistakes
At the end of every week, in addition to asking your child about what they have enjoyed at school today/this week, also ask them whether they made a mistake that they learnt from this week. They may initially find this quite a difficult question to answer but it is likely that there will be something, such as: “I missed out a full stop and noticed when I was editing” or “I forgot to work out the second part of the maths problem in Maths, the first time I tried it”. Make sure after they tell you the mistake that they focus on how they can learn from it. For example: “I missed out a full stop and noticed when I was editing, so then I went back and checked that I hadn’t missed anymore in the rest of my work”. Learning from mistakes is one of the most important elements of a growth mindset.

Thursday lunch!
Thursday is school Census day, and some elements of funding are worked out based on the number of children having a school meal on that day, so it would really help if as many children have school lunch on that day as possible - especially in EYFS and KS1. It's hot dogs and chocolate chip cookies. Please book your child's meal on the Aspens app.

Glockenspeil Lessons

Welcome Back
It was lovely to see all the children again yesterday but I'm sure they (and we!) were all glad it was only a 2 day week as it's a bit of a shock to the system getting up early again! Community Assemblies will start again next Friday and we are pleased to let you know that Class Assemblies are starting again, with Cherry and Cedar this half term. We will be writing out about clubs next week.
Please remember to order your child's school lunches again as the kitchen cook to order. As the Aspens kitchen staff are so good, they noticed how many dinners weren't ordered yesterday and put in an extra 30 baked potatoes to make sure there was enough food for everyone.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Helping your child with anxiety about transitions
Coming back to school after the Christmas break can be difficult for some children. Children also offer suffer from anxiety about going to new places or being apart from their parents or family members. There are a number of ways that can help your child through these difficulties. Click here to see a larger version of the sheet below. Different ideas will work for different children. I think that the pocket pebbles works really well.

Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Disappointment with Christmas Presents
One of the hardest challenges at Christmas is how to respond when your child is disappointed with a gift they did - or did not - get.
Children often either want a gift someone else is getting, they don’t want to give a gift to someone because they’d prefer to keep it, or they’re disappointed because they received a gift they don’t like -it's a minefield I remember well!
This article is really helpful in giving hints and advice on how to deal with these tricky situations. I especially like the suggestion of role playing ahead of time - 'what will you do if you get a gift you don't like?'
Children often do the unexpected and we all know how easy it is for a child to be disappointed. They haven’t quite developed a filter yet, and it’s hard to mask their disappointment. By preparing them for gift giving events ahead of time, it’ll make these situations easier to handle!
Merry Christmas!
We wish all our families a very happy Christmas and New Year, with just the right amount of fun, food and peace! We look forward to seeing everyone again in the 2023!

Christmas Dinner with Pigs in Blankets!
Yesterday, children and staff alike had the most amazing Christmas dinner cooked by the Aspens team; Jules, Linda, Emma and Alex. You may have noticed that the original menu didn't include pigs in blankets as food prices have gone up so much. However, one of our parents noticed this and offered to supply the school enough pigs in blankets for everyone! This was such a lovely and kind gesture and meant so much to the children who LOVE pigs in blankets! A huge thank you from everyone for your thoughtfulness.

Snow!!
The week started with a heavy snowfall and continued with sub zero temperatures. As well as being cold, it was very beautiful and the children had a fantastic time playing in the snow and building snowmen!
Thank you Jason!
You may have noticed that on Monday morning, the school drive and all the pathways were completely clear of snow. This was entirely due to the efforts of Jason Neville, our Site Officer who began at 5.30am and single handedly cleared it ready for the staff and children. We are very grateful to have such a dedicated Site Officer!
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week:
Use strategies to show you and your child can handle tough times. Try, even in casual conversation, just to say, "You know, I'll always be there for you. Always trust that you can come to me." When they do come to you in those tough times, listen instead of reacting. When we react to what they are sharing, children often withdraw. This is because our reactions add to their existing stress and worry, especially if they think they have to worry about our emotions. During tough moments, calmly say, "You're going to get through this and I'll be by your side" This is part of preparing your child for the path rather than preparing the path for your child.
Celebrations!
The following children have been presented with the Values Awards and the Award for Resilience. More details are on the Class Pages every week.
As we were in Church today, we will hold our Celebration Assembly on Monday.
Farewell Mrs McInerney
Today is Mrs McInerney's last day at school (although she will be popping in again on Monday!) We said a fond farewell and wish her all the best for her new adventures. Willow Class will miss her.
From January, we are pleased to share the news that Mrs Katie Vajzovic will be the teacher in Willow Class on Thursday and Fridays.
Acorn Nativity
Children in Acorn class performed their play 'Wriggly Nativity' and they were fantastic. They have only been in school just over 3 months, so to be able to perform in front of the school, and then to parents is a great achievement! Well done to Mrs Monks and Miss Simmons for all the hard work they put in to make this happen - and a huge well done to all the children!
Hazel and Willow Christmas Play
This year, the children in Willow and Hazel Classes performed their play 'Lights, Camel, Action' to rave reviews! One parent wrote, "It was clear how much the children enjoyed it and we were so impressed with how well they performed." The children were brilliant, and sang and danced their way through the play.
The audience was also very impressive with lots of excellent audience participation!
Again, well done to the team of staff who produced this play - always a particular challenge co-ordinating more than one class! Thank you to Miss Hensleigh, Mr Lennon, Mrs McInerney and Mrs Vajzovic
Sleeps Til Santa - Star Radio!
Star Radio visited the school today to record the children singing 'Sleeps to Santa'. The children sang brilliantly as always and they said that it was the quickest recording they have done as they sang so well! The song will go out live on Star Radio next Wednesday at 6.30am, 7.30am, and 8.30am - when there will only be FOUR sleeps til Santa! Listen on www.star.radio or on 100.7FM
Carol Service in Church
We held our Christmas Carol service in Church this morning. Children from the different classes read the Christmas story and we sang our favourite carols. It was wonderful to see so many parents there too. Thank you to all the parents who walked to the church with the children.

Lost Property
There are, at the same time, lots of items of clothing missing, and lots of items in lost property! At the last count there were 27 items without a name, which we are unable to return to their rightful owner. Please, please, please could you ensure that every item of clothing is named and that you impress upon your children the importance of looking after their belongings.

Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Bouncing Back
Try looking up 'Famous Fails' with your children to encourage them to realise that great things take lots of effort to success, for instance, Dyson Vacuums.
Currently, Dyson is one of the top-selling vacuums of all time. However, founder James Dyson’s road to the top was lined with failure. He tested 5,271 prototypes before finally found a vacuum that worked - but even then, he couldn’t find an American or European company to license and manufacture his product. As a result, in 1993, he created his own manufacturing operation. Just two years later, Dyson vacuums were a worldwide sensation, demonstrating that it pays to never give up.

Congratulations!
Over the last year, as well as teaching full time, Miss Hensleigh was also studying for a Masters Degree in transforming Practice at Cambridge University.
Her Dissertation was on 'The Power of Yet and All Things Growth Mindset: a small-scale study on the creation of a growth mindset".
I am sure you will all join me in congratulating Miss Hensleigh on achieving a Distinction in her Masters!
Road Safety Patrol
Our Year 5 Road Safety Monitors this week are Jack, Florence and William and they want to remind children to look both ways when they are crossing the road.
Developing Resilience - Tip of the Week: Coping
Of course, none of us want our children to get hurt, either physically or emotionally. But we must also acknowledge that they must be exposed to some challenges so they can develop and practice coping skills. If we take away opportunities to develop resilience, or undermine their abilities by doing too much for them, we can send the message that we don't think they are capable. Our challenge as parents and educators is to give our children some room to fail, fall of their bikes, scrape their knees and at the same time teach them how to ride steadily and confidently over the rocky paths that lie ahead.
We need to prepare our child for the path....
... and not try to prepare the path for our child!
Gardening Club
This week, children in gardening club spent some time planting yellow and purple primulas to go in pots by the front door. They did a great job!

School Council Advent Calendar
The School Council decided they would like to make a whole school Advent Calendar. There are 21 days on it as there are 21 days in December until we break up. That means there are 3 children in each class who's names were drawn to open the 'window' for the day. Inside is a little treat plus a reading, message or prayer, written by the School Councillors.

Grandparents Tea Party
Yesterday, we held a lovely tea party for a full hall of grandparents and the older members of the local community. The orchestra played different pieces and children also played their instruments for individual pieces. We had children playing drums, guitars, piano, violin clarinet, recorder and cello. There was also an opportunity for everyone to sing some Christmas carols.
A huge well done to all the children who performed - some of whom were very nervous but did it anyway - showing real courage!
Thank you also to Mrs Armitage and Mrs Verwoerd - who are the chief music makers in school - we couldn't do what we do without them.
Does Your Child Sleep Well?
Did you know, around 50% of children (80% of children with SEND) will have a sleep issue at some point? The Sleep Charity has launched a National Sleep Helpline to ensure that parents have access to high quality, evidence-based advice.
The helpline number is 03303 530 541. It is open Sunday - Tuesday & Thursday 7-9pm and Wednesday 9-11am.
You can read more here: https://thesleepcharity.org.uk/national-sleep-helpline/
Everyone functions better after a good night's sleep - so it is good to know there is help available!
Road Safety Patrol
Our Year 5 Road Safety Monitors this week are Jack, Florence and William. We are really pleased to report that most children and their adults are now crossing in the safest place, which is opposite the end of the school drive.
Growth Mindset Tip of the Week
The power of believing that you can improve - the Power of Yet.
Watch this 10 minute video clip of Carol Dweck, who researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet?
Thinking about failure differently makes a huge difference!
Does your child speak another language at home?
Schools are funded based on a number of different elements. If a child has English as an Additional Language, this brings in a small amount of additional funding. We can only gain this income if we know if this is the case.
Even if your child is also fluent in English, if you speak another language to them at home (not necessarily all the time), please can you inform us of this and what the language is. This will then be recorded on your child's record and will enable the school to gain a small amount of additional funding. Every little helps!

Christmas Trees
The Manor Farm Christmas trees will be on sale from Saturday 26th November. Not only are the trees freshly cut from a local supplier, but there will be a donation to the school from every tree sold. Thank you once again to Manor Farm for this very generous contribution to the BSA.
Christmas Lunch
This will be on Tuesday 20 December - please book your child's lunch through the Aspens app/website.
On that day, children can 'dress for dinner' in any way they want - Christmas jumpers, fancy dress, or smart/party clothes.
Uniform Reminders
Please can children only wear trainers on PE days.
We have a PE uniform for days when children have PE lessons. The uniform is either plain black tops/hoodies or items with the school logo. Please do not let your child wear other sports items that are branded, patterned or with logos or pictures on.
Thank you for your support with this - when all children wear the uniform, it creates a more harmonious atmosphere as children don't need to compare themselves to others.
Items of second hand school uniform are available free of charge to any parent experiencing financial difficulty. If this is the case, please email Debs at office@bourn.cambs.sch.uk in confidence.
Please ensure all items of uniform are clearly marked with your child's name.
Lost Property can be found in the hallway outside the office. Please do check this if your child has lost an item of clothing.

Thank you to the church who kindly agreed to fund this activity for the children. Thank you also to the parents who helped walk the children to and from the church.
