Grafham Water
The children in Year 4 had a wonderful time at Grafham Water this week. They took part in adventurous activities such as raft building, high ropes and sailing. They all challenged themselves and achieved more that they thought they could! Thank you to Mrs McWilliams, Mrs Wheatman and Mrs Collins for taking the children and looking after them so well!

If anyone has any planks or off cuts of wood, please could you consider donating them to the school. These will be used to make a couple of work tables for the Nature Reserve and some bird or bat boxes.

New Willow Structure
After school on Friday, the staff will be helping to plant a new willow tunnel in memory of Mrs Monks. This is something she was really keen on us getting for the children, so we felt it was a fitting tribute.
Hopefully it will be finished by the time you arrive on Monday, but it is really important that the children don't play in it until it is a little more established please.
We will be organising a whole school event in the summer term to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Hawking House Day
Today was Hawking House Day and the House Captains, Jonathan and Albert shared very interesting information on collective worship today about Stephen Hawking and how he overcame his disability to become one of the greatest minds in history. They had also writtena scavenger hunt for all the school, finding clues about Stephen hawking. Well done Albert and Jonathan!
Jo Ford's 25 years at Bourn!
Many parents will know Jo Ford, who is one of our amazing TAs. We have just celebrated 25 years of her working at Bourn Primary. She had a lovely day of celebration, which we called her Silver Jubilee and she was Queen of the School. Children entered into the spirity by bowing or curtseying when they saw her! A huge thank you to Jo, on behalf of all the staff and children she has worked with over those 25 years!
Collective Worship on Fridays
On a Friday, we hold a Community collective Worship where all parents are invited to join us to celebrate the chidlren's achievements over the week - both in school and out. If your child has achieved a certificate, medal or award for any activity they do outside school, please do bring it in and we will present it to them!
We do ask that all parents are seated on the chairs at the back of the hall before we start. If you need to leave before the end this is not a problem. Please could you also ensure that the fire exits are always kept clear.

Year 5 Bikeability
The Year 5s brought the sunshine with them for their Bikeability lessons this week. The children went out and about with the instructors, learning how to manage road junctions, parked cars and develop their cycling skills to make them safer on the roads. The instuctors were very impressed! Well done Year 5s!
World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day, all the children took part in book related activities all day! They had time on the Book Bus, spent time with Reading Buddies from different classes and they all looked fantastic. We wondered at times if we were at Hogwarts there were so many Gryffindors!
Thank you also to the BSA for running the ever popular Golden Tickets stall. There were lots of excited children waving around their winning tickets after school!

Life Education Centre
This week, all the children had a lesson in the Life Education Bus. The lessons taught in the bus were age and stage appropriate and the objectives were matched against the Cambridgeshire PSHE scheme of work. The sessions involved a variety of discussion points such as how to keep our bodies healthy and how to make good and safe choices. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the BSA again for kindly contributing to half the cost for the visit. This has been a fantastic learning opportunity for all of our children.
Book Bus
Please note that the Book Bus will not be open after school next week. Many thanks.
Junior Bake Off Opportunity!
We have been contacted by Ollie, the Assistant Producer at Love Productions; the production company behind The Great British Bake Off, The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down.
They have recently opened applications for the 11th series of Junior Bake Off; a Channel 4 programme that celebrates the culinary talent and ambition of children aged aged 9-15 years old who are budding young bakers.
Filming would take place from July 2025, but our applications close on Sunday 23rd March 2025.
Interested bakers can apply online at - www.applyforjuniorbakeoff.co.uk
I am sure there will be lots of interest in this - feel free to bring in any practice bakes to the office!!

World Book Day
We are looking forward to World Book Day next week. The whole school will be exploring The Day The Crayons Quit and will take part in lots of exciting and creative activities
Children are invited to come to school dressed in bright colours to represent the crayon, or in a costume of a character from a favourite book.
House Points
The collection and addition of House Points got into a bit of a pickle over the last half term and it has proved impossible to get an accurate number for each House. Miss Hensleigh and the House Captains have met to discuss and a new system will be put in place from next week. We have therefore decided to start from zero again from this half term.

Yesterday, Rosewood class went to the Roman museum in St Albans as an end point to their Roman history topic. As well as visiting the Roman hypercaust in Verulamium Park, the children also had the opportunity to handle real Roman artifacts and look around the museum. The museum staff were very impressed by the children's knowledge. Thank you to Mrs McWilliams for leading the trip and the parent helpers too.

Uniform Reminder
A number of parents have asked me to clarify the uniform expectations, specifically the PE kit.
Children should only wear PE items on their PE lesson days. All items worn should be plain, with no additional design or logos. Even if a hooded top or sweatshirt is mainly black, this is not the uniform expectation. Trainers should also be black or mainly black.
Second hand uniform with the school logo is always available to buy from the BSA. PLease email Debs what you need and she will pass this on. These are better value and good quality. If you don't choose to buy items with the school logo, plain items are available at good prices from supermarkets. Please don't allow your child to wear non uniform items. The uniform expectations are on the website here.

BSA
At the BSA meeting last week, £10,000 of funding was approved. This vital money improves the experiences of your child at school and also subsidises the financial requests made of parents.
Funding was agreed for the following:
KS1 playground toys £617
Swimming pool running costs - up to £2200
Handwriting scheme resources - £1017
School trip subsidy to reduce amounts asked from parents - £1750
Life Education Centre visit, to reduce amount asked for from parents - £841
Junk Percussion workshop - £600
Additional iPads - £3000
The funding raised by the BSA goes towards making the school a better place for all the children. Whilst spending is not always equally spread over year groups/Key Stages at every point, we do ensure that all year groups benefit over a longer term. The BSA also puts on events for the children for their fun and enjoymentt, such as the disco and circus workshops.
If you would like to join the BSA team, please contact bsa@bourn.cambs.sch.uk It is a really good way to get more involved in the school and to make new friends! There are currently a relatively small group on the BSA and we would love more people to join!

All money raised will go towards the charity that the house captains have chosen for this year, which is 'Make a Wish'.

Remembering Karen Monks
We started the term with the very sad news that Mrs Monks, the Acorn Class teacher had died. Karen had been recovering from her operation in November so her death was unexpected and shocking. As a staff team, we are devastated and miss her hugely.
The children in Acorn Class particularly have been supported really well by Mrs Garrad and Mrs Crome as well as their buddies in Year 6 with Miss Hensleigh.
We started the week with an assembly based on the book, The Invisible String, which is all about how we have an invisible string connecting us to those we love, wherever they are. The children did some activities based on this, helping them to think about the people important to them.
All the children have made a heart with an 'invisible' string, remembering Mrs Monks. These are being hung on the little tree in the entrance hall, and will be given to Karen's family.
Rev'd Nigel Pearson led a very moving gathering for parents after Collective Worship this morning. This was attended by very many parents and was an opportunity to give thanks for Karen's life and all she gave to us all.
Condolence Book
We have set up a book of Condolences to pass on to Karen Monks' family. It is available at the office for parents to sign. If you are unable to come in to school, please do email your message and we will print it out and stick it in the book for you. Karen's family have taken great comfort from the messages they have received.
Thank you also for all the messages you have sent to us as at school. They are very much appreciated.

Christmas Service in Church
We held our Christmas service in St Helena and St Mary's Church in Bourn. The choir sang beautifully, and children from different classes read the nativity story. We all sang some favourite carols and with a packed church, they sounded beautiful.
Thank you to Reverend Nigel for this service and for our weekly collective worship in school. Thank you also to Mervyn Bradford and Elinor Cole from the church who always help to set up the church, organise the heating and the bells, which were ringing as we arrived today!
Christmas Parties
All the children had Christmas parties this afternoon. The Acorn and Oak buddies had a joint party and the Oak children gave their buddies a soft toy that they had made.
Choir
This is the second year of Jo Davidson running an after school choir at the school. She dedicates a huge amount of time weekly, both in school and behind the scenes to making the choir so successful. It is an important addition to our musical school and we are very grateful to Jo for running this.
Book Bus
We are very fortunate to have the amazing Book Bus, which holds our fiction library. Not only do classes visit regularly during the week, but the bus is open to parents and children every Thursday after school. A huge thank you to Simone and Heath Glennen and Louise and Emily Burch who open the Book Bus after school every week, sort out and catalogue the books and keep it all organised. Thank you also to everyone who has dontated books over the year!
Helpers in School
We are also very lucky to have so many people who give up time every week to come and help in school. This is often hearing chidlren read or helping them learn their times tables. This really does make a difference to the children and we appreciate the time they give. Thank you to: Huiseung Atkinson, Carlie Philp, Kirsty Cornwell, Lucie Zubrik, Barbara Steward, Jane Jenkins, Jo Proud and Sally Ward.
Cambridge Foodbank Hamper Appeal
Christmas can be a tough time of year, and many households in Cambridge are struggling with the cost of essentials. By donating a hamper, you can make a huge difference to a household in Cambridge this Christmas. If you are able to help, please click here for further information
If you would like to donate any individual items, please drop these in the box outside the office.
Christmas Lunch
The children and staff had a fantastic Christmas lunch on Wednesday. It was prepared by Jules, Linda and Tyler and was delicious! We all had a lovely time listening to Christmas music and pulling crackers!
I'd like to also thank the Aspens team, Jules, Linda, Alex, Kelly and Tyler for their hard work during the year. They are always so accomodating to children's needs - and always remain so cheerful, despite cooking hunderds of dinners each week!
BSA
This year, as ever, the BSA have run a huge variety of events which have contributed to making the school a better place for all the children. This term, they have organised: Roald Dahl Day, Quiz Night, Bag Drop, Christmas Gift Shop, Christmas cards, KS2 panto trip and of course, Christmas Capers! BSA funding also paid for the whole school Junk Percussion workshops during Music Week.
This is a huge amount of work behind the scenes, as well as on the day of any event. I would like to especially thank the Committee members; Catherine Byfield (Chair), Mimi Wheeler (Treasurer), Lucie Zubrik, Dee Sturdy, Simone Glennen (Secretary), Andy Johnson, Phil Cavanagh, Carly Philp and Sarah Brown. Thank you also to Linda Eves for organising the Bag Drops. They give up so much time and work in making these events enjoyable and their dedication is very much appreciated.
These events are often organised and run by only a small number of people, which makes it very time intensive. It would be great if we could lighten the load by having more parents involved in the BSA. If you are interested in helping out, please email bsa@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Music Week
We held a very successful Music Week before half term. The parents who helped with this made the week so much richer - thank you especially to Michelle Harvey-Hyde and Archana Paikray for their time preparing and delivering dance workshops and to Colin Mackay for support with the sound system.
Parents and Carers
Thank you to all our parents and carers for your support for the children and staff this year. We truly appreciate your support in so many ways, including the Christmas gifts you have so generously given and your best wishes.
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and we look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Gardening Club
I would like to thank Julie Dore and Ailsa Potter for running our Gardening club and to Annie Davenport from Bourn Gardening Club for planting bulbs and flowers in the flowerbeds and baskets by the Reflection Garden. They make the school a brighter place!
Divali
Thank you also to the parents who came to talk to the children during Divali this year, and gave the children in Acorn class sparkers - which they loved! Thank you to Ramesh and Lalitha Ramesh, Archana Paikray and Shivika Sharma.
Parent Helpers on Trips
Whenever we go on trips, we also ask for parents to help. We are very grateful to everyone who has helped this year with the Cross Country Competition: Feliz and Russell Berry, Jo Davidson, Clare Rebbeck and the Panto Trip: Debs Rivers, Dee Sturdy, Feliz berry, Georgie Barnes and Catherine Byfield, who also organised the coaches and booked the performance.
Thank you also to the parents, too numerous to mention by name, who have walked to and from the church for Harvest and Christmas services.
Governors
The work of the school's governors is very much behind the scenes, but it is a crucial role and they do it with great dedication. They have been especially supportive this term, when things across the school have been so challenging and I would like to thank all the governors for their support and hard work: Vince Chaney (Chair), James Davenport, Sally Ward, Jen Collard, Penny Bell, Richard Zubrik, Simone Glennen, Hong Wang, Pete Watts and Andy Johnson.
Staff
I would also like to especially thank all the members of staff for their exceptional dedication, flexibility and hard work this term in keeping the school running as smoothly as possible. I am privileged to lead a team of such incredible people.

Panto Visit
Today, Key Stage 2 children went on an exciting visit to The Junction to watch the panto, 'The Tiger's Tale'. There was huge excitement as they set off, especially as there was a double decker coach!! They had a wonderful time! Thank you to the BSA for funding the cost of the coaches.
Panto in School
Acorn, Willow and Hazel classes also had a panto today in the school hall. They watched 'Mother Goose' and joined in so enthusiastically with the audience participation I could hear them from my office!
BSA Christmas Gift Shop
The BSA held their Christmas Gift Shop today so children can buy surprise presents for their family. This is always enjoyable for the children who love to choose the presents. Thank you to Dee and the BSA who organised this.

Acorn Nativity
On Wednesday, the children in Acorn class performed in their first nativity play, 'Shine, Star Shine'. They acted, sang and danced beautifully and it was wonderful to watch them all.
Here were the children 'backstage' before the performance!
A huge thank you to Mrs Crome and Mrs Verwoerd for stepping in and making it the success it was.
Willow and Hazel Nativity
On Wednesday and Thursday, Willow and Hazel children performed in their play, 'Prickly Hay'. The quality of their acting, singing and dancing was exceptional and it was obvious how much they enjoyed it!
Huge thanks go to the staff involved in putting this together - co-ordinating and coaching 58 children is no mean feat: Mrs Cornwell, Mrs Wilson, Mrs Vajzovic, Miss McCollum, Mrs Lauria and Miss Hennessy.

Thank you to everyone who helped in any way at the Christmas Capers on Saturday. Despite the wild weather there was a good turnout and the school was packed. Cross Country Competition
33 children in Key Stage 2 took part in the Cambridgeshire Schools Sports Partnership cross country competition this week. It was a bright crisp day, perfect running conditions and the children really enjoyed their run! As a team, Bourn came 4th in both the Year 5&6 competition and the Year 3&4 competition, which is excellent.
Some children from Bourn were also placed - well done to Albert, who was second in Year 5&6 boys; William who was first in Year 3&4 boys; and Yasmin who was first in Year 5&6 girls and Dorothy who was third in Year 5&6 girls.
Well done Bourn! Thank you to Mr Puckey who organised our team and to the parents who helped on the day.

Cedar Class Assembly
Cedar class wowed us with their assembly this week! It was all based on an animated story based on the game Rock, Paper, Scissors. The children have been re-writing the story and focusing on using adjectives and similies to make the story more interesting. The assembly finished with the children singing to the song, Rock, Paper, Scissors, by Norwegian band Katzenjammer. They had a great time and Miss Carmisa, Mrs Collins and I are so proud of them all! Well done Cedar Superstars!

Bourn to Run
It was a sunny Sunday for Bourn to Run! Hundreds of runners joined the 3k or 10k route and we were all especially impressed by the fastest children from Bourn School! A huge well done to:
Stella - fastest KS1 girl
Henry - fastest KS1 boy
Enid - fastest KS2 girl
William D - fastest KS2 boy
There was also a prize for the best fancy dress which was won by Sasha!
It was a fantasic day for all concerned with food and drinks, relaxation sessions, henna and facepainting and an opportunity to soak in the atmosphere.
This was the 17th Bourn to Run and it is hoped that the funds raised from this event will mean that in total £100,000 has been raised over the years.
On behalf of the school I would like to thank Tara Watts and the Bourn to Run committee who did an amazing job of organising the whole event, everyone who helped on the day in any way and the sponsors of the event, including local businesses who provided raffle prizes.

BSA Class Reps
The BSA are looking for Class Reps for Oak, Rosewood, Hazel, WIllow and Acorn Classes. The role of the Class Rep is to be a communication link between the BSA and the Class WhatsApp groups. The BSA will message class reps and ask them to put information on the class WhatsApp group, and encourage people to get involved in BSA events. It doesn't involve any meetings and can be done from the comfort of your own home! If you can help with this it would be very much appreciated. Please email catherine.byfield@yahoo.co.uk.

Welcome to our New Acorn Children and Families
The new Acorn children have started school this week and have looked so smart and grown up in their uniforms. We start with small groups so that the staff have lots of time to get to know each child, and give them as much attention as they need as they settle in to school. The children have explored the classroom and outside areas, the playground and the trim trail and are getting to know their new friends. They have all had a lovely time!

Leavers' Day
Today is the day we say goodbye to our wonderful Year 6 children as they move on to their secondary schools. Miss Hensleigh spoke about each child and the children shared their memories of their time at Bourn. The choir sang beautifully and there was hardly a dry eye in the house!
We also said a fond farewell to some members of staff: Mrs Cox is retiring after 23 years of working at Bourn; Mrs Mackridge is leaving to train as a teacher; Miss Grist is leaving to pursue different career options and to get married; Mr French is continuing his career in sports and education but teaching adults; and Mrs Culley is leaving after 13 years at Bourn to specialise in writing teaching resources for modern foreign languages. (Look out for her on Oak National Academy teaching videos!)
We will miss all the children and adults who are moving on, but we know they will all continue to grow and achieve great things! It has been great knowing and working with you all.
Thank you
A school relies on so many different people to run in a smooth, efficient and caring way. There are some people who's work often remains in the background, but without their contribution, we would quickly fall apart! Lesley, our Finance Manager, keeps us financially stable, orders everything we need, makes sure everything works as it should; Debs does a huge amount of administrative work that keeps the school running, as well as being the warm welcome on the other end of the phone and in the office; Jason keeps everything working, fixes things and makes sure the building and grounds are safe and Fiona works her 'magic' around the school to keep everything clean!
Thank you also to all the staff, whose dedication to improving the lives of all the children blows me away on a regular basis.
Thank you to all our parents who are so supportive and make our work easier and more enjoyable. Together, we make the school the best place it can be for all the children.
I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing everyone again on Thursday 5 September.
Year 6 Play - The Rocky Monster Show
Oak Class treated us all to a fantastic performance of The Rocky Monster Show this week! All the children shone in their performances and the whole play was excellently directed by Miss Hensleigh. Thank you to everyone who helped make this performance so memorable. Here are just a few photos of the play!
Choir
The choir gave a performance to their parents of all the songs they have learned over the year. They sang beautifully as ever.
Thank you again to Jo Davidson, who set up the choir this year and has achieved such a high standards with the children.

78% of our children gained the expected standard in reading, writing and maths, which puts Bourn in the top 11% of all schools nationally.
16% of our children gained the higher standard in reading, writing and maths, which is more than double the figure nationally (7%).
Further, more detailed information will be put on our website over the next week.
Multiplication Tables Check
Children in Year 4 are required to sit a national Multiplication Tables Check. After lots of hard work and practice, the children in year 4 did really well, with 68% scoring full marks (compared to the national figure of 34%). This puts Bourn in the top 4% of schools nationally.
Well done to Year 4 and to Mrs McWilliams on your hard work in ensuring children know their times tables, which is a skill for life.
Cherry Community Challenge
Cherry Class have demonstrated their passion for road safety through our Community Challenge.
They were concerned about numerous issues concerning road safety such as:
•People travelling too quickly •People parking where they shouldn't •People not crossing safely •
They researched road safety initiatives and even invited Des O'Brien, a local parish councillor to come in and talk to us about the traffic situation in Bourn. He said that lots of residents shared our worries and were concerned at the speed of some drivers. He also explained how they are trying to get a zebra crossing installed on one of the roads but not the one outside of the school. He explained that it takes a lot of campaigning with the council as many villages try to bid for money and permission to do the same thing – proving that road safety is a serious issue everywhere!
The children have produced a leaflet on road safety around school for parents and carers.

Parents and families are welcome to join us for the End of Year Picnic on the school field from 12 - 1pm. Keep your fingers crossed for a sunny day!

Cedar Community Challenge
Class Cedar spent the afternoon at Merribourn day centre on Thursday this week. The children chatted to the visitors there, read to them and played games with them. They also entertained them with some of the songs from the year 3 & 4 performance and some of the children played musical instruments for them. Grace played a piece on the violin and Valentina and Ayden both played some music on the piano. The visitors seemed to really enjoy the children being there and really engaged with them. The children were given a big bag of sweets to share as we left. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit and lots of them asked if we could go back and visit again.

Sports Day - Wednesday 19 June 9.15am
This year we are doing things a little differently in honour of the Olympics! There will be 3 key sports taking place simultaneously. The children will rotate around the different sport stations, with 2 classes being at each station at any time.
Parents are invited to bring blankets/camping chairs and to base themselves in the centre of the field with the activities taking place on the edge. Children will be seated on the outer edge and we ask that although parents are free to rotate around the centre of the field, please do not approach the classes or individual children.
We hope that you will enjoy this new version of Sports Day and your feedback will be welcome after the event.
The school gates will re-open at 9am but please don't go on to the field before that as we will be setting up.
Mentor Visit
We had a visit from an athlete mentor called Alistair Patrick-Heselton. He was a Para-Olympic footballer. He talked to the whole school in assembly about how he overcame a serious brain injury early on in his football career through perseverance and self belief. He taught the children that believing in themselves and giving 100% effort in all areas of life are the secret of success.

Year 3&4 Performance
Children in Year 3&4 performed their Musical Extravaganza this week. They sang and danced to songs from musicals including The Sound of Music, Matilda, Annie and The Wizard of Oz. They received well-deserved rave reviews, such as this one below:
It was such a pleasant evening to witness a wonderful performance- "Extravaganza". We thoroughly enjoyed the show. Thank you very much for your hard work with the children. Every aspect of the performance was amazing. It was so good to see the children performing with such confidence in front of a huge audience. We can imagine the dedication and effort it took to create such a fantastic show.
Well done to all the children and a special thank you to the staff who made this possible - Miss Nutland, Mrs McWilliams, Mrs Cox and Mrs Collins.

This means they can take photographs of plants, animals, landscapes or other features of the earth, such as the sea, rivers etc. All photographs should be the children's own ideas and editing.
There will be a winner in each class.
