Staffing Changes
Mr Lennon (Willow Class teacher) will sadly be leaving at the end of this term for a post in a school much closer to home. We will miss him but wish him all the best for his new job (and much shorter journey!)
We have appointed Mrs Kirsty Hawkins who we are pleased to welcome to the staff team at Bourn. She will be teaching in Willow class with Mrs Vajzovic from the start of next term.
Christmas Capers
Christmas Capers was a huge success, with something for everyone to enjoy, from Santa's Grotto to a scented candle stall. Well done to the Year 6 children whose stalls were particularly popular!
Thank you to everyone in the BSA who organised the event and to all the other parents who helped in any way, from serving refreshments, putting together the hampers and running a stall - and much much more!
It was a lovely event and a great kick start to the festive season!
Online Safety Newsletter
This week’s online safety parents/carers guide, produced by National Online Safety as part of their #WakeUpWednesday campaign is all about Disney +.
Christmas Decoration Day
This week, all the children spent time making Christmas decorations and cards. They had to apply lots of different skills, as well as patience and perseverance, and what they produced was very high quality! The papercrafts below are from year 4 and year 5.

Contact Details
It is really important that we have more than one phone number we can ring if your child is ill at school. Please can you check your details on the MCAS app and check the numbers are up to date and there are back up numbers if the priority number is unavailable. Thank you.
NO NUTS & SESAME SEEDS IN SCHOOL
A reminder that we have children in school with severe allergies to the following items: peanuts, sesame, soya, hazelnuts, cobnuts, almonds, pistachio, cashew, walnuts and tahini (key ingredient in hummus). Please avoid bringing in items that have these ingredients.
Lost Property Prevention
PLEASE label your child's clothes, bags and lunchboxes. Children regularly leave their things lying about, but we quickly reunite them when the things are named. We really want to avoid the huge pile of unnamed clothes we ended up with at the end of last year. Biro or Sharpies work well for writing names on labels. We may write your child's name on the label of unnamed clothes.

Our Giraffe
Our giraffe, named Hope, is now off on her travels as she has gone to meet her other giraffe friends before being displayed in Cambridge next year.
The design of the giraffe was taken from the ideas that children submitted. The most common themes of our values, our House names, music, our class trees and butterflies were all included. We also took inspiration from the flowers and leaves from the stained glass by the office. Children in Rosewood class in particular wanted to remember their friend Lyla, so there is also a purple heart on the design.
All the children contributed to the painting, but the design and details were pulled together by Miss Nutland. I am sure you will all agree they all did a fantastic job!
Hope, Our Giraffe!
Online Safety Newsletter
This week’s online safety parents/carers guide, produced by National Online Safety as part of their #WakeUpWednesday campaign is all about the Online Safety Act, which was passed into law in October 2023. The aim of this important Act is to establish new layers of protection from children when they are online.

School Start Time
A reminder to parents that the school day officially starts at 8.50am when the register is taken. If children arrive at the gate at 8.50am, they are already late for the register by the time they get to the classroom.
As the children arrive in the morning, they complete morning work, which is core English and maths skills. This is also the time when children in KS2 take AR tests.
Children who get to the classroom after the register starts are missing nearly an hour's worth of core skills practice each week.
Cosy Clothes Day
Every now and again we have a Cosy Clothes Day just because... Next Friday is our first Cosy Clothes Day of this winter. Children can come in whatever clothes that make them feel nice and cosy!
Book Bus After School Session
The Book Bus will be open after school on Wednesday 6th next week. Please do drop in for a browse, to borrow books or just to read a story to your child. Thank you to Simone and Heath for running these sessions.
Year 5 Traffic Monitors
This week, Lucy, Tilly and Jadon have been on duty. They want to remind everyone to look both ways when crossing the road, as cars sometimes do come from both directions.
Please also ensure that you do not park over anyone's drive as we have been contacted again by neighbours who have been blocked in.
There was also the sad news that a cat was run over and killed during the morning school run this week. Please do take extra care to drive really slowly around the roads near school.
Thank you.

Music Concert
This week, parents, friends and families were treated to a music concert, complete with tea and delicious home made mince pies (courtesy of Jules from Aspens!) Performing were the orchestra, the school choir and many individual children who played the instruments they learn. The standard of performances was excellent and the children and audience clearly enjoyed themselves very much.
This was the first public performance of the new school choir, who sang beautifully. Jo Davidson has done an amazing job in teaching the choir to perform at such a high standard in less than a term!
I would also like to especially mention Mrs Verwoerd for the incredible work she does with the orchestra. There are over 40 children involved and she manages to inspire and co-ordinate all of them so that they produce an excellent standard of playing. I am sure you will all join me in thanking her for everything she does to make the music provision at school so impressive.

Measles Information

Childhood vaccination rates have fallen over the past ten years and this week statistics show that over 102,000 children aged four and five years old starting in reception are not protected against catching measles, mumps and rubella. Measles is highly infectious and if left unvaccinated nine out of ten children in a classroom can catch the disease if just one child is infectious. If you are unsure if you or your child are up to date, check your child's red book or GP records and make an appointment to catch up any missed doses. For more information on the NHS vaccination schedule, please visit the NHS website.

Please remember to cross between the blue cones. Thank you.

House Captains
We are very proud of all the children who put themselves forward for election. It takes a lot of courage to stand up in front of the whole school and say why they would make the best House Captain - even more so when there can only be 2 Captains in each house.
The children have now voted and the new House Captains were announced today in Friday Collective Worship.
Congratulations to:
Freddie and Ivy - Shackleton
Ben and Ava - Seacole
Fifi and Annabel - Hawking
Rishabh and Jack - Pankhurst

Each class will work on their Challenge over the year and will give regular updates. We want the whole school community to be engaged so please do talk to your children about what ideas they have and maybe add some of your own! We will share the Challenges for each class once they have been finalised - watch this space.
You can find further information about What's New this year by clicking below. These are slides from the Welcome to the year Ahead presentation.

Year 5 Traffic Monitors
This week, Rosie, Ethan and Delilah have been on duty. They have noticed that many people have been crossing the road opposite the bus stop. They would like to remind everyone to cross the road between the blue cones where it is safest.
If You Have a Concern
From time to time, there may be something you are worried about in relation to your child, their learning or their interaction with other children. If you have any concerns, please contact your child's class teacher to discuss this. Their email addresses are on the Our Staff page of the website.
Absence Reporting
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please email
absencereporting@bourn.cambs.sch.uk.
Please remember to cancel any pre- ordered lunches if your child is off sick or you may be charged by Aspens for it.

Bourn Primary Academy
8 September 2023

Welcome Back!
The children have settled brilliantly into their new classes and new routines, with the Year 6 setting an excellent example as positive role models to the rest of the school.
A quick snapshot of the learning happening in each class before break today!
Parent Meetings
All parents are invited to the Welcome to the Year Ahead Meeting on Thursday 14 September. We will start with a 30 minute session in the hall and this will be followed by 2 sessions in the classroom.
Please note, Acorn Class parents only - the first classroom session will be 5.30-6pm, and the second will be 6.30 - 7pm.
Phonics Information Evening
On 28 September from 6-7pm, we will be holding a Phonics information evening, to introduce parents to our new Phonics Scheme, Little Wandle. There are quite a few changes to how we teach and when books will be coming home, so please do try to attend if your child is in Acorn, Willow or Hazel classes. All other parents are also welcome to attend. Please book a place here:

House Captains
Children in Year 6 have the opportunity to put themselves forward to be House Captains. They are currently preparing their applications and voting will take place soon.
Getting Ready for Cycling Lessons!
At Bourn, we view cycling as an important life skill. Cycling is part of our PE curriculum, from teaching children to ride balance bikes in reception, Bikeability in Years 3,4 and 5, and cycling lessons in PE. Mr French is currently servicing all the bikes to make sure they are safe! Children in Year 5 and 6 will be doing cycling first - please remind your child to bring in their helmet!
Bourn to Run - Sunday 17 September
A reminder to sign up to Bourn to Run - registrations close today. Lots of the children are already signed up to the 3k race and lots of those not already signed up are really keen to join! Online registration ends today but you can also register on the day.
It is also a really fun day, so even if you don't want to run - come along and cheer on the runners and enjoy the atmosphere!

This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the school, and provides funds to buy things to improve the experiences of your children whilst they are at Bourn
CB23 Schools Careers Convention
The Network BC23 Schools run a highly successful Careers Convention for Year 5 pupils (and year 6 pupils this year) in all of the primary schools in Network CB 23 and it is held at The Great Barn in Bourn!
The aim of the day is to introduce the children to a wide range of career options and help them to make connections between learning and “working life” whilst still at primary school. We hope that by doing so, we will inspire them to value learning, open their minds to new possibilities and help them raise their own ambitions.
The organiser is looking for new exhibitors for this year’s convention. They are keen to have a wide range of careers and jobs; from Accountants to Zoologist, Bakers to Yoga instructors, Lawyers to Engineers, pilots, TV engineers, photographers, HGV drivers to Surveyors and everyone in between.
If you can help or know of someone who would be perfect, then please contact Jill Foster at the email address below and she can provide more details and an exhibitor’s form. Information about the event in previous years is on the Network CB23 website. www.networkcb23.com/careers-convention.html

Traffic and Parking
Yesterday there was a serious situation whereby a fire engine was stuck as a result of inconsiderate parking. The outcome of this could have been disastrous.
I am asking all parents, again, to think about the safety of others when you park. Do not park in the following places, even if you are late or there are no other places nearby to park:
- in or behind the bus bay
- on double yellow or yellow zig zag lines
- across people's driveways (even slightly)
- where there is a dropped kerb
- the private road up to the residential garages
-on corners
Please do let the school know if you see parking on these areas, so we can remind individuals as necessary.
Parents are encouraged to park at the Manor Barn car park and walk from there. It's only a short walk and the fewer cars we have around school the safer it is for everyone, especially your children.

Message from Parents' School Preference Adviser
My name is Tiff Christian and I am the Parents' School Preference Adviser for Cambridgeshire, as part of the SENDIASS team. I have recently been appointed after a long period of vacancy and would like to introduce myself to you and your families.
The service offers families advice and support when applying for schools, either when admissions open for transition on the 11th September 2023 or for in-year applications. I am able to advise how the transfer and admissions process works, as well as supporting the understanding of policies and criteria for different schools. Also, I can support in the appeals process and issues concerning transport.
