Bourn Church of England Primary Academy

Mathematics

Our maths curriculum at Bourn Primary Academy aims for pupils to develop a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about maths. Mathematics is a creative, collaborative and highly inter-connected discipline that is essential to everyday life, and critical to science, technology and engineering. In a rapidly advancing world, maths is necessary for our pupils to live and work as citizens of the future.

Children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, and secure in their conceptual and procedural understanding with the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. This involves learning maths number facts off by heart including times tables and number bonds. We develop children’s resilience and reasoning and model and encourage the accurate use of mathematical language.  We equip children with enthusiasm, knowledge and skills to solve problems of all kinds, with the belief and confidence that everyone can do maths.

Progression through the subject is informed by the White Rose Schemes of Learning, and is underpinned by the latest research in Mastery Maths from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) resources. Mathematical topics are taught in blocks to enable the achievement of ‘mastery’ over time. Each lesson phase provides the means to achieve greater depth with more confident children being offered enriching problems as well as investigations, to deepen their understanding.
