Physical Education
Physical Education (P.E.) and Sport play an important role at Bourn Primary Academy, contributing to children’s well-being, confidence and self-esteem. Children have two P.E. lessons a week - one taught by specialist sports coaches and the second by the coach and their class teacher in partnership. This team teaching is funded through the Sports Premium and ensures ongoing professional development for the teachers as well as high quality teaching for the children.
We have our own swimming pool, and every child, from EYFS to Year 6 has two swimming lessons a week in the Summer term. Additional small group or 1-1 lessons are provided for children who are very anxious about swimming, or need a lot of additional support.
A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation. We also know that physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression). Children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement. therefore, we aim to ensure that children are given every opportunity to lead active lives.
Children have regular opportunities to run for 15 minutes during the school day (the 'Daily Run'), and we encourage them to aim to beat their own record of the number of laps they do in this time. We also offer after school and lunchtime clubs so that pupils have regular opportunities to enjoy a wide range of sports and activities.
We encourage our pupils to participate in teams and enjoy competitive sport. There is a competition programme that runs throughout the year, which encourages our pupils to participate within school time in their school teams.
We have children who participate in a range of sporting activities outside school to a very high level, including National BMX competitions, horse riding and wake boarding. These are celebrated within school too - we are very proud of our potential future Olympians!
