Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 12th December 2025

What we have been learning this week...

It might have been our busiest week in Year 2 yet!

We hoped you have all enjoyed our performances of The Big Little Nativity. The children have been working so hard on this and the outcome has been absolutely amazing! Thank you for all your support with helping to learn lines and creating beautiful costumes.

In English, we have been learning about diary writing and have used our knowledge from History to write a diary as though we were living in London during the Great Fire. We had to think about our use of time conjunctions, first person vocabulary and ensure we were writing in the correct tense. We have started our diary entries this week and are aiming to finish them next week.

In Maths, we have been learning about the properties of shapes with a focus on how to identify the number of vertices that a shape has. We have been focusing on 3D shapes towards the end of the week identifying the number of faces, vertices and sides they have.

Alongside our classroom learning we got to watch the Acorn's Christmas performance and we had a visit from GenR8 for an assembly. We also got to watch a pantomime performance of Cinderella.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

In RE, the children enjoyed exploring how Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus. We looked at a variety of crib scenes from different cultures and talked about what makes each one unique. The children were fascinated by the similarities and differences, and they showed great curiosity as they compared the traditions. They then had the chance to design and create their own crib scenes, putting so much thought and creativity into their work.

This term in music, the children have been focusing on becoming familiar with a variety of classical music. They have been developing their listening and appreciation skills by exploring pieces from different composers and styles. Each week, they listened carefully, shared their thoughts, and talked about what they liked and didn’t like. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they expressed their preferences and discovered new favourites.

How you can help...

I’d like to apologise for not sending the homework books out last week. This week’s homework will go home on Friday and will be the final set before the Christmas holidays. Just a gentle reminder that homework is sent home each Friday and should be returned by the following Wednesday. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Please continue to read regularly with your child and ensure their reading is logged. We encourage children to take responsibility for letting me know when they need a new book, helping them to read at their own pace. Reading together at home is extremely valuable, whether it’s their school book, a library book, a magazine, or any other reading material — every form of reading supports their growth and confidence as a reader.

Thank you for all your support and as always if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to email me.

Next week, we will be...

Next week in English, we will be concluding our diary-writing unit. The children will bring together all the skills they have practised the past weeks to complete their final diary entries, focusing on clear sentence structure, accurate punctuation, and thoughtful presentation.

In Maths, we will be finishing our Geometry unit. The children will consolidate their learning by revisiting key concepts and applying their understanding of shapes through a range of activities.

Alongside this, we will also be enjoying some festive Christmas crafts in class. On Monday afternoon, we are looking forward to joining Willow class for a special Christingle event, which we’re sure the children will really enjoy.

What we have been learning this week...

What a busy ,exciting week we have had in Hazel class this week!

In English this week, we’ve been using our knowledge from our History topic on the Great Fire of London to help us imagine what it would have been like to be there. The children explored the key features of a diary and discussed what makes diary writing feel personal and real. Together, we practised writing in the past tense and first person, learning how to describe events, thoughts, and feelings as if we were experiencing the fire ourselves. The class worked brilliantly, and these skills have prepared us well to begin writing our own Great Fire of London diaries next week.

In Maths this week, we’ve begun our new geometry topic, and the children have really enjoyed exploring shapes in the world around them. They have been identifying and naming a range of 2D and 3D shapes, counting their sides and vertices, and comparing their properties. We also started to investigate symmetry by looking closely at 2D shapes and finding lines of symmetry. The children were enthusiastic and curious, using hands-on resources and partner discussions to build their understanding. They have made a great start to our new topic and are already showing strong shape-spotting skills.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week has been especially exciting as the children took part in their first performance of their nativity in costume. Their enthusiasm was infectious—they were so proud to dress up, step onto the stage, and share what they’ve been practising. It was wonderful to see their confidence shine as they performed so beautifully. They did incredibly well, and we can’t wait to share their performance with you next week. Well done Hazel and Willow class!

This week in Science, we continued our learning about healthy eating and explored the five food groups. The children learned what each group provides for our bodies and why a balanced diet is important. They then had the chance to sort different foods into their correct categories, thinking carefully about where each item belonged and discussing their choices with partners. The class showed great curiosity and worked thoughtfully as they learned how to make healthy choices.

How you can help...

The nativity countdown is officially on and we cannot wait to share our performance with you! Just a reminder we have 2 shows; one on Wednesday 10th December at 2pm and one Thursday 11th December at 6pm. For the evening performance, could children please arrive around 5:30pm to ensure we have enough time to change and get ourselves ready. After the performance, all the children will head back to Hazel class to collect their belongings and will be dismissed from the front of the school as quickly as possible.

I wanted to say a big thank you for all your hamper donations! We have a lovely (blue) hamper ready for Christmas Capers this weekend!

Just a friendly reminder that homework is sent home on Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.

Thank you for all your support and as always if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to email me.

Next week, we will be...

Next week in English, we will be continuing to use the skills we have practised this week to begin writing our Great Fire of London diary entries. The children will use their knowledge from History to imagine what it might have been like to experience the fire, drawing on the past tense, first person, and descriptive detail we have been working on. They will focus on capturing events and emotions clearly while practising accurate sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, and presentation to create vivid, engaging diary writing.

In Maths, we will be continuing our Geometry unit, moving on to explore 3D shapes. The children will be identifying and describing their faces, edges, and vertices, as well as comparing and sorting different 3D shapes. This part of the unit will give them plenty of opportunities to apply their knowledge, make careful observations, and use mathematical vocabulary as they deepen their understanding of shapes.

What we have been learning this week...

This week has been filled with wonderful moments that highlight just how amazing the children are. From showing kindness to their peers to working hard during lessons, they’ve demonstrated responsibility, creativity, and enthusiasm in everything they do. It has been amazing seeing their confidence grow—whether it was tackling a new challenge, helping a friend, or sharing thoughtful ideas during class discussions. Each child has shown something to be proud of, and I am delighted to celebrate their progress and positive attitudes. Well done, everyone!

In English this week, we’ve been exploring the wonderful world of postcards, using Meerkat Mail as our inspiration. After receiving an exciting postcard from Sunny, the children stepped into the role of thoughtful writers, imagining what they might say back to him. They shared ideas, discussed the features of a postcard and what makes it exciting, and practised using expanded noun phrases to add detail to their writing. We also introduced the future tense, helping the children explain what Sunny will do and see in their replies. The class then put everything together to craft their own polished postcards—full of warmth, creativity, and meerkat-sized enthusiasm.

In Maths this week, we’ve been rounding off our addition and subtraction unit, and the children have tackled the final challenges with real confidence. They’ve been comparing addition statements, working out missing numbers, and building fluency with both 1-digit and 2-digit calculations. This has really helped them deepen their understanding of number relationships and choose efficient strategies. The children enjoyed discussing their thinking with partners and checking their ideas together, showing great perseverance as they refined their skills. They are now able to use lots of different tools to help them with these calculations.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week in Science, the children continued their Animals Including Humans unit by exploring the importance of exercise for our bodies and minds. We carried out a series of mini-experiments where the children tried different types of exercises — from star jumps to jogging on the spot — and then reflected on how each activity made them feel. They talked about changes in their breathing, heart rate, and energy levels, as well as how exercise can lift our mood and help our brains feel more alert. There were lots of thoughtful observations about feeling stronger, calmer, or more focused after moving their bodies, and the children were brilliant at linking this to both physical and mental health.

This week in History, the children explored how London was rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666. We learned about the challenges the city faced and the important changes that were introduced to make London safer. The children stepped into the shoes of Sir Christopher Wren, imagining themselves as designers tasked with creating a new, improved London. They carefully considered the new regulations — wider streets to stop fires spreading, sturdy stone houses instead of timber, and safer tile roofs — before designing their very own maps of a rebuilt London. It was wonderful to see their creativity and problem-solving skills as they planned thoughtful, fire-safe city layouts.

How you can help...

You should have received a email regarding the Christmas Nativity and how you can arrange to come and see. We can't wait to show you! Please could each child's costume be in school in a named bag by Monday 1st December.

We now have our Christmas Caper Hamper box ready and would be grateful for any blue-themed donations you’re able to send in. Chocolates, drinks, smellies—anything you think fits the theme (and is nut-free!) would be very much appreciated.

Just a friendly reminder to please send in healthy snacks for the children to enjoy during the day. Thank you for helping us keep everyone fuelled and focused!

Please continue to read regularly with your child and ensure their reading is logged. We encourage children to take responsibility for letting me know when they need a new book, helping them to read at their own pace. Next week, we will be...

Next week in English, we are starting a unit on diary writing, linking closely with our History learning. The children are using what they have discovered about the Great Fire of London to inspire their own diary entries, imagining what it would have been like to be there on that day. They are focusing on capturing events and emotions in detail, while practising clear sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, and presentation to make their writing engaging and vivid.

In Maths, we will be starting our new Geometry unit. The children will begin by recognising and naming a range of 2D and 3D shapes before taking a deeper dive into the features of 2D shapes. They will be exploring the number of sides and vertices each shape has, as well as investigating lines of symmetry. This unit will give them plenty of opportunities to build their mathematical vocabulary, make careful observations, and apply their knowledge as they compare and sort different shapes.

What we have been learning this week...

What a busy week we have had in Hazel Class!

In English this week we’ve carried on with our poems unit and spent time exploring all sorts of fun rhyming poems. The children have been working towards creating their very own dog-themed poem — brainstorming ideas, planning out lines, and experimenting with rhymes that made us smile. They then used their presentation skills to turn their plans into polished poems, complete with personality and plenty of wagging-tail energy.

In Maths this week the children have really been pushing themselves as we’ve stepped into more complex addition and subtraction. They’ve been subtracting 1-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers and adding pairs of 2-digit numbers, both under and across 10 — a big leap that they handled with heaps of determination. The Diennes blocks have been out in full force, helping everyone visualise the tricky parts and build confidence. They especially enjoyed teaming up with a partner, chatting through their strategies and cheering each other on as they cracked each challenge.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week the children have really enjoyed continuing their science unit on Animals Including Humans. We took a deep dive into different life cycles and compared the life cycle of a chicken with the life cycle of a human — which led to some brilliant conversations. The children chatted about how chickens hatch from eggs while humans grow inside their mothers, and they loved talking about the different stages each one goes through as they grow. There was lots of curiosity about chicks turning fluffy, humans learning to walk, and how both species slowly become more independent over time. It was lovely hearing them make thoughtful connections, spot similarities and differences, and share all the fascinating facts they’ve picked up along the way.

The children also enjoyed diving into our PSHE unit all about Growth Mindset. They had lots to share about what it means to keep trying, learn from mistakes, and believe that their brains can grow — and they were very proud to show off what they already knew. One of their favourite moments was “becoming the teacher” and helping a character who was stuck in a fixed mindset. They came up with clever, encouraging ideas to help them shift their thinking, and it was lovely watching them confidently explain why effort, practice, and positive self-talk make such a big difference.

How you can help...

Next week, an email will be sent with details about the Christmas nativity and ticket availability. You are welcome to start bringing in your child’s costume. Please place each costume in a named bag to help us keep everything organised and avoid any mix-ups.

Just a friendly reminder that homework is sent home on Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.

Random Request: We are starting to plan some Christmas crafts as the big day gets closer, and the children are excited to create some beautiful decorations to take home. If you happen to have any smooth pebbles or stones at home, we would love for you to send them in to help with our projects!

Thank you for all your support and as always if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to email me.

Next week, we will be...

This week, we are starting work on Traction Man! The children are diving into the story, exploring the characters, and thinking about how they can describe them in detail. We’ll also be innovating our own stories inspired by Traction Man, paying careful attention to sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, and presentation to make our writing clear and engaging.

In Maths, we will be concluding our focus on addition and subtraction. The children have been working on subtracting two-digit numbers and consolidating the strategies and skills they have been practising throughout the topic. They are becoming more confident in choosing the most effective method for each calculation and using their understanding of place value to solve problems accurately. This final stage allows them to demonstrate their growing independence and apply their knowledge in a variety of challenges.

What we have been learning this week...

What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Hazel Class! The children have shown fantastic effort and focus during their assessments, demonstrating just how much progress they have made. It has been wonderful to see their hard work paying off and their confidence growing day by day.

One of the highlights of the week was the “Big Write” activity. The children were inspired by a short clip called Taking Flight and created their own imaginative stories. They really enjoyed bringing their ideas to life, carefully using adjectives, expanded noun phrases, and prepositions to make their writing more vivid and detailed. Their stories were full of creativity, showing how the children are developing their storytelling skills and expressing themselves with confidence. In Maths this week, we have continued our work on subtraction, building on the children’s understanding of number relationships. The children have been learning to subtract across 10 and to subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number. They have been exploring different strategies, such as using number lines, partitioning, and visual resources, to help spot patterns and calculate accurately. The children have shown great perseverance as they tackle increasingly challenging problems, explain their thinking, and develop confidence in choosing the most efficient strategies to find their answers.

This week, we have continued our history topic on the Great Fire of London. The children explored how people tried to put the fire out and compared these methods to how we would tackle a fire today. Through drama activities, cutting, and sticking, they recreated key events and thought carefully about the challenges people faced. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and creativity as they bring this historical event to life.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week, we have continued our Nativity preparations! The children have been practising the songs and taking part in full run-throughs of the performance, working alongside Year 1s. The story is really coming to life as they focus on remembering their lines and performing with confidence. They have shown fantastic teamwork by supporting one another, listening carefully, and taking turns on stage. Their enthusiasm and effort are shining through, and we can’t wait to share their wonderful performance with everyone!

We have also continued our D.T. project this week. The children have been building their own axles and wheels for their toy vehicles, putting their designs into action. They are now moving on to the decoration stage next week, adding finishing touches to make their models unique and creative.

How you can help...

A letter will be sent home this Friday with details about your child’s role in the Nativity, along with some suggestions for costumes. Please hold off on sending in costumes for now, as we will begin collecting them towards the end of the month. Your child’s lines will also be included, giving them the opportunity to practise at home at their own pace.

Please continue to read regularly with your child and ensure their reading is logged. As a class, we are encouraging the children to become more independent in letting me know when they need a new book. This approach helps ensure that children can continue to read at their own pace, as it is not always the teacher who reads with them, and changes may not be immediately noticed otherwise.

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have been exploring a range of poems, focusing particularly on those inspired by fireworks. The children have enjoyed reading and discussing different poems, identifying powerful verbs and nouns that bring the images to life. They also had the opportunity to watch a fireworks display, which helped them to gather ideas and sensory vocabulary for their own writing. Using their findings, the children created a word bank full of exciting descriptive language. They then used this to plan and write their own shape poems, capturing the sparkle, colour, and energy of fireworks.

This week, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction, building on our understanding of number relationships. The children have been learning to add three one-digit numbers efficiently, exploring different methods to make ten and find totals quickly. They have also been working on adding to and beyond multiples of ten, using number lines and visual resources to help spot patterns and make connections. Towards the end of the week, we began looking at subtracting to and from ten, using practical equipment and number facts to support our reasoning. The children have shown great perseverance as they apply their knowledge to increasingly tricky problems, explain their thinking, and develop confidence in choosing the most efficient strategies.

This week, we have started our new science topic all about Animals, including Humans. The children began by exploring what all living things need to survive, identifying the importance of food, water, air, and shelter. They discussed why each of these is essential for life and compared them to the things we want rather than need. Through group discussions and practical activities, the children thought carefully about how humans and animals meet their basic needs in different ways. It has been lovely to see their curiosity and thoughtful ideas as we begin to explore this exciting topic further.

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have been continuing to explore Little Red Riding Hood and encouraging the children to be creative with the story. They have been experimenting with new characters and inventing their own settings, thinking about how these changes affect the story. Using their knowledge of narrative structure — opening, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending — the children have been planning and writing their own versions of the tale. I’ve been really impressed with their creativity and imagination. They have been using expanded noun phrases, engaging sentence starters, and descriptive vocabulary to make their characters and settings come alive.

This week, we have been starting our work on addition and subtraction, focusing on consolidating the children’s understanding of number bonds to 10 and 20. They have been learning how to use these bonds to solve calculations more efficiently and to see connections between numbers. The children have also been exploring fact families and using 20 frames to help visualise the addition and subtraction calculations. It has been wonderful to see them reasoning with numbers, spotting patterns, and using their knowledge to solve addition and subtraction challenges with increasing confidence. These activities are helping them build a strong foundation for future work with larger numbers and more complex calculations.

This week, we have been exploring our creativity through flower design. The children have been experimenting with mixed media, trying out different materials and techniques to bring their ideas to life. They have been building their skills step by step, with the goal of re-creating Van Gogh’s famous sunflowers in our final week. The children have been thinking carefully about colour, shape, and texture, and supporting each other by sharing ideas and giving constructive feedback. Their enthusiasm and creativity are really shining through, and I’m excited to see how their final sunflower creations will turn out!

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week in PSHE, we have been thinking about consequences and behaviour. The children discussed how our actions can lead to positive or negative outcomes and reflected on the impact of their choices on themselves and others. We have also been focusing on collaborative learning, practising how to work together, take turns, and listen actively to each other’s ideas. It has been wonderful to see the children showing thoughtfulness, respect, and teamwork during discussions and activities, and they are becoming increasingly aware of how their behaviour affects those around them.

 How you can help...

Please continue to read regularly with your child and ensure their reading is logged. As a class, we are encouraging the children to become more independent in letting me know when they need a new book. Just a friendly reminder that homework is sent home on Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.

We are still on the look out for resources for the children's DT project for this term: Wheels and Axles. I would be very grateful if each child could bring in a cardboard box (shoe size or smaller) and any spare milk bottle tops you may have at home. If these could come in by the half term that would be ideal.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at Parents’ Evening, where we’ll be sharing how the children have settled in and are getting on with school life. It will be a lovely chance to celebrate the small, important steps they are taking in adapting to their new routines and environment.

Thanks again for all your support and kindness and as always any questions or concerns, please feel free to email.

Next week, we will be...

Next week in English, we will be practising key writing skills. The children will focus on using expanded noun phrases, imperative and action verbs, and will pay careful attention to SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar). This will help them strengthen their writing, making it more precise and engaging, while consolidating the skills they have been learning so far.

Next week in Maths, we will be continuing our work on addition. The children will focus on using number bonds to 10 to help with calculations and will practise adding three-digit numbers. What we have been learning this week...

This week in English, we have been continuing our work on Little Red Riding Hood, focusing on how a story is structured. The children have explored the key parts of a narrative — the opening, build-up, problem, and resolution — and have thought carefully about how events unfold and how characters respond to challenges. I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the children’s writing. They have shown great imagination and have started to use expanded noun phrases, interesting sentence openers, and descriptive vocabulary to bring their ideas to life. All of this will help prepare them for writing their own creative stories in the coming weeks.

This week in Maths, we have been concluding our work on place value, consolidating the children’s understanding of how numbers are made up of tens and ones and how they can be partitioned in different ways. The children have been practising counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 3s, building their confidence with number patterns and strengthening their understanding of multiples. It’s been fantastic to see how much progress the children have made — they are becoming much more confident when working with numbers and are developing strong foundations for future work in multiplication and division.

This week in PSHE, we have been thinking about consequences and rewards. The children discussed what makes a consequence or reward appropriate and explored how our actions can have different outcomes. They showed excellent teamwork and thoughtful ideas during their partner discussions, really listening to each other and sharing sensible, reflective responses.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

This week in Geography, we have really enjoyed learning about what it is like for humans to live in hot and cold countries. The children explored different parts of the world, showing off their fantastic knowledge about the Equator and how it affects climate. They thought carefully about how people adapt to living in different environments and reflected on what kind of country they would like to live in and why. It was wonderful to see such thoughtful ideas and enthusiasm during our discussions!

How you can help...

Please continue to read regularly with your child and ensure their reading is logged. As a class, we are encouraging the children to become more independent in letting me know when they need a new book. This approach helps ensure that children can continue to read at their own pace, as it is not always the teacher who reads with them, and changes may not be immediately noticed otherwise.

I have been truly impressed by the quality of the homework that has been coming in. It has been a lovely experience to share some of the children’s projects with the class, and it is wonderful to see how proud and enthusiastic they are about their work. Just a friendly reminder that homework is sent home on Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.

In the coming weeks, the children will be starting their DT project for this term: Wheels and Axles. I would be very grateful if each child could bring in a cardboard box (shoe size or smaller) and any spare milk bottle tops you may have at home. If these could come in by the half term that would be ideal.

Thanks again for all your support and kindness and as always any questions or concerns, please feel free to email.

Next week, we will be...

Next week in English, we will be working on our Little Red Riding Hood story innovations. The children will use the familiar structure of the tale — the opening, build-up, problem, and resolution — to plan and create their own versions with imaginative twists. They will think carefully about how to change characters, settings, and events while keeping the story’s key structure. This will be a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their creativity and use the descriptive language skills they have been developing.

Next week in Maths, we will be starting our new unit on addition and subtraction. The children will build on their understanding of place value to help them add and subtract numbers confidently, using practical equipment and written methods to show their thinking. They will also continue to practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 3s to strengthen their number fluency.

Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 3rd October 2025

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we began exploring the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children have been focusing on understanding the characters and settings, which will help them when they create their own versions of the story in a few weeks, complete with their own unique characters and adventures. We also incorporated a drama lesson, where the children enjoyed acting out the story, bringing the characters and scenes to life and helping them understand the story even better. In our lessons, we have been practising key writing skills, including the use of expanded noun phrases, adjectives, and verbs, to make our writing more detailed and engaging. The children have been excited to bring the story to life through descriptive language and imaginative ideas!

In Maths, we are coming to the end of our place value unit, and the children have made excellent progress in understanding how numbers are made up of tens and ones. They have been learning to read, write, and represent numbers in a variety of ways, including using base-ten blocks, drawing pictorial representations, and partitioning numbers to show their value. This week, we also created a whole-class number line, which allowed the children to practise comparing numbers, identifying which numbers are greater or smaller, and understanding their order. In addition, the children began counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. They enjoyed practising these sequences in a variety of ways, including chanting, moving along the number line, and applying their counting to real-life contexts.

This week in Computing, the children have been learning about how to share things safely online. They explored the importance of keeping personal information private, thinking carefully about what is safe to share, and understanding how to use online tools responsibly. As part of this, the children created their own self-portraits using digital tools and then shared them on the Purple Mash dashboard. This activity helped them practise their digital creativity, while also reinforcing safe online behaviours and how to interact positively in a digital space.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

The children have really enjoyed creating posters to show how we can help look after God’s creation. They came up with amazing ideas and demonstrated a strong understanding and knowledge of caring for the environment. Their posters reflected thoughtful thinking about ways we can protect nature, reduce waste, and care for animals and plants, showing both creativity and awareness. It was wonderful to see them engaging with these important ideas so enthusiastically and sharing their learning with the class.

Next week, we will be...

In English, we will continue exploring Little Red Riding Hood, starting to think about how a story is structured. The children will be exploring the opening, build-up, problem, and resolution, developing an understanding of how events unfold in a story and how characters respond to challenges. This will prepare them for creating their own stories with imaginative characters and plots in the coming weeks.

In Maths, we will be concluding our place value unit, consolidating the children’s understanding of how numbers are made up on 10s and 1s and how they can be partitioned. We will also continue practising counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 3s, building confidence with number patterns and laying strong foundations for future work in multiplication and division.

What we have been learning this week...

This week in English, we explored the story of Paddington. The children enjoyed reading about Paddington’s adventures and discussing the exciting places he visits. They focused on writing setting description about Paddington station, using sentences that included adjectives to make their writing more interesting. We also practised using the suffixes -er and -est to describe things, comparing objects and places in our sentences. The children worked hard to include these grammar skills in their writing, making their descriptions detailed and engaging.

In Maths, we focused on developing the children’s estimating skills. The children enjoyed estimating quantities in pictures as well as guessing where numbers should be placed on a number line before checking their answers. I have included a link just below to a fun estimating website, in case you would like to try some activities at home with your child. We also started to compare objects and numbers using the symbols <, >, =, and the children practised explaining which number or object was greater than, less than, or equal to.

https://estimation180.com/days-21-40/

This week in science, we explored the absorbency of different materials as part of our preparation for creating umbrellas next week. The children tested a variety of fabrics and papers to see how much water each material could soak up. They made careful observations, recorded their results, and discussed which materials were most absorbent and which were least absorbent.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

The children have really enjoyed their visit to the book bus this week, it is lovely to see children sharing different books with their friends in such a lovly, calming environment. The children have also enjoyed using playdough to create their own models in R.E, then carefully destroyed them and reflected on how this made them feel. We discussed how our feelings about our creations can help us understand how God might feel about His creation. The children shared their thoughts and emotions, showing a growing ability to connect their experiences with the ideas we learn about in R.E. This activity helped them think deeply about respect, care, and responsibility for the world around us.

How you can help...

Please continue to read regularly with your child and log their reading. If your child is feeling confident with their book you can challenge them by asking them questions about what they have read or by asking them to recall the story they have read. Reading books and logs should be brought back into school each day.

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and is due back in the following Wednesday. Please can you encourage your child to complete as much of their homework as possible, homework will build on skills taught within school or be a task that will build their confidence ready for an upcoming lesson.

We would still be very grateful for any old newspapers that you could send in with your child to help us with our creative projects in Art.

Next Friday, we will be visiting the church for our Harvest celebration. We will be walking to the church, and we would greatly appreciate parent volunteers to help us on the walk.

Thanks again for all your support and kindness and as always any questions or concerns, please feel free to email.

Next week, we will be...

In English, we will be exploring the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The children will be retelling the narrative, acting out some important parts and having a go at writing their own version of the story, applying their learning from this week. We will focus on using adjectives, verbs, and conjunctions to make our sentences more exciting, as well as practising writing in full sentences with correct punctuation.

In Maths, we will be starting to look at the 2, 5, 10, and 3 times tables. The children will explore patterns in these times tables, practise counting in multiples, and begin to apply their knowledge to solve simple problems. We will use a range of practical activities and games to help the children develop confidence and fluency with these times tables.

What we have been learning this week...

This week in English, we explored the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk. The children enjoyed identifying the key events and characters in the story, then worked together to create colourful story maps to show the sequence of events. We also revisited important grammar skills—using verbs, adjectives, and conjunctions to make our sentences more exciting and detailed. In Maths, we focused on being flexible thinkers by finding different ways to represent a number. The children experimented with number bonds, part–part–whole models, place value, and even visual representations to deepen their understanding.

This week in Art, the children explored different strategies for collage. They experimented with layering, cutting, tearing, and arranging various materials to create unique and imaginative pieces. It was fantastic to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action as they discovered new ways to express their ideas.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

The children really enjoyed their P.E. sessions this week. The children focused on communication and teamwork. They participated in activities and games that encouraged them to work together, listen to each other, and support their teammates. It was wonderful to see their collaboration, problem-solving when asked to order themselves in alphabetical order without talking!

What we have been learning this week...

What a lovely first full week we have had in Hazel class!

In English this week we have been exploring the book ' I like bees but I don't like honey' to help us describe ourselves and what we can do. We have been practising neat presentation, labelling pictures of ourselves, writing sentences using conjunctions such as because and but and developing our confidence in speaking and sharing ideas with the class. In Maths we have continued our place value unit; we explored different the different ways we can represent 10s and 1s and had lots of hands on experiences with dienes, multi-link and place value charts.

This week in RE, the children revisited the Christian creation story from Genesis. We began with a lively “busy-busy” music activity, moving our pencils to jagged, mechanical rhythms before switching to calm, flowing music—helping the children feel the difference between work and rest. They reflected on why rest is important for our bodies, minds, and families, just as God rested on the seventh day. After reading the story together, the class eagerly recalled what was created on each day and explored beautiful artwork inspired by creation. To finish, they chose their favourite day of creation to draw—producing vibrant, expressive artwork that truly captured the wonder and excitement of the story!

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have enjoyed spending some time on the book bus this week as well as choosing their favourite day of the Christian creation story from Genesis to draw— producing vibrant, expressive artwork that truly captured the wonder and excitement of the story!

How you can help...

I am delighted to share that your child is now bringing home a reading book every day. It would be very helpful if these books could come back to school each day as well. Please continue to read regularly with your child and record their reading. If your child feels confident with their book, you can extend their learning by asking questions about the story or encouraging them to retell it in their own words.

Homework books will be sent home on Fridays and contain a variety of activities linked to our current topics and themes. We kindly ask that these are returned by Wednesday so that we have time to provide feedback and add additional work in Maths, English, and spellings.

Thank you so much for your support during this first full week — it really helps to make the start of Year 2 such a positive experience for everyone.

If there are any questions, please do ask.

What we have been learning this week...

We have had a very busy week this week.

This week in English we have been focussing on SPAG skills. We have looked at subordinating and coordinating conjunctions and tried to use them accurately in sentences. We also used unusual adverbs in our writing and tried to use words we have not used in our writing before. In Maths, we have been learning about position and exploring types of turns. This has been really tricky especially when we then had to think about anti- clockwise and clockwise turns.

In Science, we looked at different plant types and explored different weather conditions around the world. We enjoyed some team games as part of PE this week and used our History lesson to create fact files on Martin Luther King Jr. We enjoyed having our visitors for open classroom and we hoped you liked seeing all the hard work the children have done.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We liked having the beebots out in class to help us learn about direction.

It has been a lovely week this week.

We have been keeping cool from the heat and the children have done very well with still trying their best. In English, we have been looking at the story of Meerkat Mail. The children have learnt about postcards  and how they are different from letters. We wrote a postcard from the perspective of Sunny and used facts about the place to make our postcard accurate. In Maths, we have been learning about position and direction. We looked at language to describe position and had a go at using and following the language accurately ourselves. In art, we explored pointillism by studying leaves and their patterns in detail. During PSHE, we thought about the type of touch that we like and what type of touch is not ok. Our history had us thinking more about the impact of Rosa Park's actions and how it helped change and impact on people's lives. We went on our walk to remember Mrs Monks and the children showed great respect and listening during this time. We enjoyed hearing the poem that Mrs Crome read which was 'Oh the Places You'll go'.

What we have been learning this week...

It has been a lovely week in Hazel.

In English, we have been exploring empathy and looking at the text 'The Friendship Bench'. We acted out scenarios with our friends where we might experience conflict and thought about how to resolve this. We also rewrote the story from the perspective of the character Flint to help understand why he needed a friend too. During Maths, we explored non-unit fractions and learnt how to identify and find three quarters of amounts and shapes.

Our PSHE taught us about who we can trust and what different roles adults can play to help use be safe. During Geography, we explored Cambridge and learnt some facts about the local area. We presented these in a mind map and found all our favourite places. In PE, the children were practicing their cricket skills and were learning the different roles. They had to work as a team to ensure that they were all playing fairly and giving each other the best chance of success. In Computing, we made fact files on a topic of our choice using the template design that we were given.

What we have been learning this week...

We have been working hard this week.

In English, we have been exploring our use of language. We have been looking at vocabulary that features in our story that we have not heard of before. This involved us learning how to use the class dictionaries. We have been using our new words to help us improve our sentence writing. In Maths, we have been learning how to recognise half in different forms. We have looked at how we can show half even when an object is split into more than 2 parts. We have used this to help us split large shapes and numbers.

In Art, we are continuing to work on our space art topic and have been looking at perspective to create a new effective on our work. We have continued to use shading and are now starting to incorporate abstract colour as well. In Science, we are exploring the health of different types of plants. We compared different plants and used our observational skills to comment on plants around school. In PSHE, we thought about conflict resolution with friends. We created a script and thought about the word 'stop' and what it means to us. We explored different scenarios and considered what could cause the conflict. We then used our script to try and solve the problem. During Geography, we went for a virtual walk around Bourn with the children using navigational language to help us find local areas of interest in Bourn.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have been starting to draw our planets. We begun by learning how to shade effectively.

What we have been learning this week...

It has been another busy week for Hazel!
We have been taking part in our sponsored read to raise money for the book bus. We have been reading in unusual places around school. We even had the chance to do a shared read with Year 5! The children have enjoyed the chance to enjoy the different types of texts that we have in the classroom.
In English, we have started our unit on Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure. We have been working on descriptions this week and had to describe Mr Penguin using expanded noun phrases. We also had to use the museum map to help us navigate around. We picked our favourite room and designed and described it to inspire others to want to come and visit. In Maths, we finished our topic on volume, capacity and temperature. We have been learning how to read different scales and have had to read word problems containing different operations. We have had to read the word problem and look at the language to identify which operation we need to use.
During Art, we have been exploring abstract and realistic images of space. We picked our favourites and tried to copy the piece. Our topic in PSHE has been on physical contact and considering when contact is and isn't appropriate. What we have been learning this week...

We have a lovely start to our summer term!

In English this week we have been thinking about past tense vocabulary. We have been learning different rules for the suffixes that we can use in past tense words. To practice our skills we wrote a recount of our trip to Wicken Fen. We thought about correct punctuation and made sure that we wrote in the past tense consistently. In Maths, we have been continuing with volume and capacity. We have been learning how to solve multi step problems involving the 4 operations. This has helped us to practice applying our known facts to a new concept.

In PSHE, we started a new topic of relationships. We started by exploring the different types of families that there can be. We explored our families and considered how they are all different. We then wrote up a recipe for a happy home. The children had to think about the different ingredients that we wanted. For our art topic this term we are exploring space art. This week we explored different examples of space art and compared them to each other. We discussed what we liked and didn't like before trying to replicate one ourselves.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We followed instructions from each other exactly as they were written!

What we have been learning this week...

It has been an exciting week in Hazel!

Our school trip to Wicken Fen was a big success. The children had lots of fun exploring the ponds and discovering all the animals inside. They had to work hard to identify all the animals that they had caught. We went out into the wild and used our senses to explore what was around us. We had to use our ears to explore the different sounds of the fen. The children had to colour match using different beads to find the colours of the fen and we went to see the Wicken Fen water pump (not windmill!) and learnt some interesting facts. The children also got to go mini beast hunting. We had to use magnifying glasses to help us count the legs on different minibeasts. The children had to catch and sort their animals according to the amount of legs. We got to see a range of animals up close. The children had lots of fun working in groups throughout the day to complete their activities. They behaved brilliantly throughout and were great representatives of the school.

On Friday we have our Easter experience day and we are taking part in different craft activities to help us memorise and explore the Easter story in depth.

In English, we have been making our own lolly stick superheroes. The children had to make their own and create a set of instructions for other children to follow. They had to think carefully about the equipment they need and carefully word their instructions to help the other children be successful in making their own heroes. We were able to follow the instructions successfully using lots of imperative verbs to help us.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We had a great time on our trip!

What we have been learning this week...

This week in Hazel we have been working hard. We have been learning our lines for our class assembly today. The children have done a really good job and we are excited to show it to the school.

In English, we have been writing letters to Duncan as though we are crayons. We had to come up with our own colour and think of an argument to convince Duncan that we could or could not be used anymore. This involved us thinking about sentence structure and using descriptive language. In maths, we have been working on comparing length and height of different items. We have been out and measured length and height around the school and have been working hard to ensure we are measuring accurately.

In Science, we have been summarising our learning on living things and their habitats. Our trip next week will help bring the learning alive. It has also been Science Week and we have been exploring different animal adaptions. We went on a scavenger hunt using different clues to help us find the right animal. The children have been working hard in PE and have been practicing their ball skills. They have had to work collaboratively and ensure they are using the taught techniques.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We had fun learning about animal adaptions.

What we have been learning this week...

It has been a busy week in Hazel.

This week we have been showing how great we have become at our Year 2 skills by completing our assessments. Everyone has worked really hard. In English, we have been using adjectives, nouns and verbs to create sentences. We played some games to help us reinforce the meaning of the words. In Maths, we have started our new topic of length and height. We have been learning how to add and subtract different heights and have been doing some measuring too.
In the afternoons, we have been completing our DT project. We have been making penguin hand puppets. Our week started by exploring and learning about different types of puppets. We have then progressed to learning how to sew a running and overstitch. Part of our tasks was to design the puppet and think about the accessories. The children had to create their equipment list and ensure they were ready to build their puppet. Our week ended with sewing together our puppets and putting them to the test. We needed to evaluate the techniques used and the strength of our puppets.
A polite reminder to please ensure your children are not bringing toys or fidgets into school unless this has been prearranged with myself. Thank you for your support.

What we have been learning this week...

We have been working hard this week.

In English, we have been continuing to explore 'Lost and Found'. We have been looking at different sentence types. As part of this, we have been learning how to use punctuation at the ends of sentences correctly. We have been working from the perspective of the boy and the penguin and interviewed them using the work we did. During Maths, we have been consolidating our use of addition and subtraction strategies. We have been exploring how to do this when the tens do not cross. We have explored column, base 10 and hundred square techniques. Part of this involved us doing lots of work to ensure we were fluent in our number bond facts. We also had the challenge of using word problems to look at the different language to help us decide if we need to add or subtract.

For History, we have been looking at the difference between the suffragettes and the suffragists. We had to write sentences to compare them and considered the effectiveness of their methods. In Art, we explored how to create animals and human pictures using line drawings. For Science, we have been taking part in an investigation to compare the connection between our height and arm and foot length. We have been learning how to record results on a table accurately.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have been enjoying learning how to create line drawings.

We will now be having weekly spelling tests on a Wednesday. This will be testing your child on the spellings that are sent home as part of their homework. Please ensure you are spending some time learning these with your child in preparation for this. Thank you.

The children are learning their 2,3,5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. We will be working on these throughout the school year and any practice you can do at home will help your child to feel more confident in maths lessons.

What we have been learning this week...

We have been working hard this week.

In English, we have been reading 'Lost and Found'. This week we have been thinking about feelings and looking at pictures carefully to find evidence to support our opinions. We have been learning how to use expanded noun phrases and commas as part of this. For Maths, we have finished our topic of multiplication and division. We have been spending the rest of the week recapping place value and using concrete resources to support this.

In History, we learnt about what the suffragettes did and made knowledge posters pitched for other children. We have started reviewing our spelling rules in phonics and are learning different ways to spell familiar digraphs and trigraphs. This should help to build confidence with our independent spelling. In PSHE, we have thought about what it means to be healthy and have considered different ways that we care for ourselves.

For our World Book Day activities we explored the text 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. We looked at the personalities of the different crayons and used this to create our own crayon. We then did some buddy reading with Cherry Class and went for a visit to the book bus to celebrate further.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

What we have been learning this week... I

It has been an action packed week in Hazel.

We started our week with a visit from Safari Stu. We have been learning about different animal habitats and this helped us to understand where the animals come from. We saw snakes, giant cockroaches and many other exciting animals. We learnt facts about the different animals and had the chance to hold the animals and care for them safely. For our visit to the life bus, we went and learnt about how to understand our feelings more. We thought about friendships and looked at body language and how we can tell what others are feeling. The children were really sensible for both these sessions and made great contributions to the activities.

In English, we have been reading Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. We have thought about time connectives and have been exploring how to use these in sentences. We ended the week by writing our own silly innovated versions of stuck. We got very creative with the different language that can be used to describe how something is thrown into a tree!

During Maths, we have been exploring the 5 and 10 times table. We have also been learning how to share into these amounts equally. We have been looking at picture representations and have been trying to identify the equations that we can see in the picture.

During History, we have started to learn about our topic of how women got the vote. We considered what the word 'fair' means and how we can create a fair voting situation. We had to then timeline they key events we will be learning about over the next few weeks.

In Art, we have been starting to explore what a pencil drawing is and how we can create our own over the coming weeks.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

An animal filled week with a visit from Safari Stu and a trip on board the life bus where we got to see Harold the giraffe!

What we have been learning this week... I

We have been busy this week in Hazel.
During English this week we have been exploring the text 'The Secret of Black Rock'. We started by using inference to see if we can figure out the plot of the story. When we got to hear the story we then had a go at creating an alternative exciting ending. During Maths, we have been exploring how division and multiplication are connected together. This has been testing our fluency skills in multiplication.
In PSHE, we had to work as a team to create a piece of art that we all agreed on. This was really tough as we worked in big groups to achieve this. For Art, we finished our topic of portraits by sketching portraits of our friends using our new skills. We had to use grid lines to help create accurate spacing and positioning for our portraits. In Geography, we finished our topic with a journey and expedition quiz. We tested our knowledge of the definitions of words, map symbols, the expeditions of Ernest Shackleton and familiar routes that we know.
It has been a lovely half term and I hope the children enjoy a well earned rest!

What we have been learning this week... I

It has been another great week in Hazel Class!

In English this week, we have been exploring the film 'Marshmallows'. We have been creating a lair for a creature and using expanded noun phrases to write descriptions. We then had to think about the character of the creature and consider its appearance and personality. We have ended our week by using conjunctions to write sentences about the story.

In Maths, we have been learning how to use repeated addition and multiplication to describe different maths images. We have been working on our fluency of these facts as this will help us to solve our maths challenges quickly.

In PSHE, we worked as a team to share our opinions on different pictures. Everyone in the group had to play a specific role to keep the conversation going. We did really well at this. During PE, the children continued to learn their animal dance with Mr Puckey. They had to think about the behaviour of the animal and try to recreate its movements. For Geography this week, we had to order the events of Shackleton's life. We learnt how to read dates correctly and used this to help us create a correct timeline.

What we have been learning this week... I

We have been busy this week.
In English, we have been writing out our twisted tales. These had to have a wolf in them but the children could make the decisions about the plot and character personalities. We then followed this up with some self editing time before learning how to peer mark our writing. In Maths, we started our new topic of multiplication and division. We have been learning how to use our times table facts to help us quickly share into equal groups.
During Science, we thought about microhabitats and were off out again to explore the school and find evidence of minibeasts. See our photos below! During Geography, we started to learn about Ernest Shackleton's adventures and we thought about how to be a successful explorer. We wrote job adverts as though we were Shackleton. In PSHE, we worked as a team to tackle a challenge and make it easy for each other and had to learn some new French numbers! In Art, we learnt how to accurately draw a face, shoulders and neck using a guide. We then turned this into a self-portrait.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We went into the nature reserve to look for microhabitats. Look at the photos the children took! One group decided to make a camouflaged shelter for us to watch from without disturbing the animals.

What we have been learning this week...

This week it has been our DT week. Each afternoon we have had a different focus linked to our topic of wheels and axels. First of all we thought about how wheels work and went on a hunt for wheels around school. We also had to get ourselves into groups and come up with a design brief for the pull along toy that we were creating. This involved us considering the amount of equipment and materials that we needed and how we were going to use them effectively. We knew we could only use what was on our design brief so we had to think carefully! As a team, we worked together to build our toy, we then tested out the quality of our toy and ensured that it did what we intended. This formed part of our final afternoon of evaluating our toy. Thank you to everyone who donated cardboard for us to be able to do this activity.

During Maths, we have been thinking about how to use base ten to exchange. We were using one-digit numbers at the start of the week and then progressed to subtracting two-digit numbers. In RE, we have started to think about why Christmas is important to Christians and we looked at the role of people in the Nativity story.

We have been continuing to practice our Christmas performance. Costumes can come into school at any time however please could you ensure they are in school before our dress rehearsal on the 10th December. Thank you.

What we have been learning this week...

This week in English we have been thinking about riddles. We had to solve lots of different riddles to start the week off before we had a go at planning our own animal riddle and using 'I' and 'my' to write our own. We had lots of fun doing this and it really made us think about how to use detailed description. In Maths, we have been recapping some key addition and subtraction skills to ensure we are building on our number fluency.

During History, we thought about how the Great Fire of London affected the amount of people being infected by the plague. We looked at what life was like and summarised our findings. In Art, we used rollers to practice making our own prints to get used to the printing technique needed to make our Adinkra cloths. In Science, we explored the benefits of exercise and considered how each activity we did made us feel. We had to answer some questions after we took part in some fun workouts.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We listened to some pop song versions of hymns and thought about what we learn about God from them. Have a look at what we added to our reflection area.

What we have been learning this week...

It has been another great week in Hazel Class!

In English, we have used our Goldilocks and the Three Bears story from last week to inspire some descriptive writing about the woods. We thought about the nature reserve as part of this and how we can link our adjectives to our 5 senses. In Maths, we have been continuing with our learning about tens and ones. This week we have been looking at how to flexibly partition numbers into the different tens and ones combinations that they can make.

For Science this week, we explored how to change the physical state of a solid. We had to twist, bend and scrunch different solids and assess whether it was possible for that solid to change. During Geography, we had to complete our climate map using the Equator, North Pole and South Pole as our temperature guides. In Art, we started to think about crops that can be grown in the UK to link with harvest and then began to make our collages of these crops. In PE, the children were working on their team building skills and thought about techniques to allow them to use a tennis racket and ball to get a ball from one side of the playground to the other without dropping it.

Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 20th September 2024

What we have been learning this week...

It has been a busy week in Year 2 and we have been getting stuck into lots of new learning!

In English, we have started our new topic focussing on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been thinking about adjectives and verbs to talk about Goldilocks and have become familiar with the story by creating story maps in pairs. During our maths lessons, we have been learning about how we partition numbers into tens and ones. We have been using base ten to practise making our own numbers and then challenged ourselves by using pictures of base ten to identify the number.

During PSHE, we thought about the rights that the children have and we discussed which rights that the children felt were the most important for them to have. Our science lesson this week involved us thinking about different objects and whether various different materials had the right properties for it to be a good choice to use. For example, we talked about whether a window made of wood would be useful and why not. In Geography, we identified the oceans around the world and labelled them correctly on a world map.

This week was our first visit to the nature reserve where we played some running games and several children worked in a big group to build a den for themselves to play in.
Congratulations to our school council representatives Nolan and River! It was lovely to see how much effort all the children had put into their presentations on what a good school councillor does. Well done everyone.

Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 13th September 2024

What we have been learning this week...

We have had a great start to Year 2 in Hazel Class! It has been lovely to see so many happy children coming into class each day and they have settled so well.

Our English topic this week has been all about getting to know each other. We have had to label images of ourselves using vocabulary about parts of the body. We then expanded this to include descriptive sentences about our appearance using exciting adjectives. As a class, we thought about how we could upscale our vocabulary to make our sentences even more interesting, for example using 'light blue' instead of just 'blue'. To end our week, we challenged ourselves by using the word 'because' to expand our writing.
In Maths, we have been exploring addition and subtraction. We used the equipment in our maths boxes to help us solve the equations. The children have been fantastic at presenting their work really neatly in their book and using one digit per square. To end our week, we have been using a growth mindset to help us tackle tricky maths problems where we have to use more than one step to solve the problem.
During PSHE, we have thought about things that might worry us and the children have met our class worry monster who is there to help get rid of the worries that the children may have. George the Monster (named by the children!) will be spending the year with Hazel Class.
Our Science topic is focussing on materials around us and we thought about different classroom objects and the material it is made of. We practised this skill by going out on a material hunt.
This half term we are looking at a Geography topic where we will be learning about hot and cold places around the world. This week we started by naming and locating the seven continents. We listened to the continent song and this helped us to locate which continent we live in.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have had an amazing time exploring our class free reading books!

Geography will be focussing on identifying the different oceans and in Science we will be further exploring materials and their properties.

Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 19th July 2024

What we have been learning this week...

This week has been our final week together in Class Hazel. What a lovely week it has been! In our English lessons at the beginning of the week, we wrote setting descriptions inspired by different pictures - one focusing on a beautiful lake and another on the African Savanah. Lastly, we all design a character to live in our lake setting and wrote some sentences. Throughout the week, we have talked about nouns, adjectives and prepositions.

In Maths, we practised telling the time in chunks of five minutes, using past and to. We are still getting the hang of it and will continue to practise next year.

Our afternoons have been the perfect time to focus on our final artwork for the year. We created the background using different painting techniques, used our shading skills to design planets and rockets and finally put it all together. As I'm sure you'll agree, we created a masterpiece!

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

Look at our AMAZING Space Art masterpieces!

How you can help...

We want to continue to support the children in sustaining their attention for longer periods of time. A fun way you can practise this at home is by playing board games with your child to encourage cooperation, remembering instructions, and planning ahead.

Please continue to practise number bonds at home, so that the children can immediately recall each pair. You could play snap, number bonds tennis (one person says one number, the other says its pair) or have a go at this fun game!

Hit the Button - Quick fire maths practise for 6-11 year olds (topmarks.co.uk)

We are always looking for parent helpers to come and support us with reading in school. Even if you have just one afternoon to offer per week, this could make all the difference!

OUR AWARD WINNERS THIS WEEK

There we no certificates this week, as we said goodbye to our lovely leavers.

Next week, we will be...

Next week will be SUMMER. Have a wonderful break... I wish the children all the best and wish them lots of luck for Year 3.

Signing off for the final time,

What we have been learning this week...

This week has been another busy one.

We started our week planning, writing and editing Thank You letters to Paxton Pits, before writing and illustrating a polished version. Later in the week, we have focused on using nouns, adjectives and prepositions to write a setting description. We loved it so much, we can't wait to have another setting to focus on next week!

In Maths, we have continued to practise telling the time. We revised quarter past and quarter to before concentrating on telling the time past the hour in chunks of five minutes. Lots of us found this tricky, so we have practised in different ways starting with the minute hand first, then adding in the hour hand once we had the hang of '... minutes past'.

We have really focused on RE this week by exploring the Torah. We found out why it is a Jewish person's favourite book, heard and retold the creation story (which is the same as in the Bible!) and heard and retold the story of Moses in teams. In our Art lesson, we explored different tools to create patterns for the backgrounds of our Space Art inspired by Peter Thorpe.

In Zippy's Friends this week, we have discussed how to solve a problem between friends, how to calm ourselves down when we feel upset or angry and remembered what we can do if someone is being bullied.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We loved exploring different textures in Art.

What we have been learning this week...

This week we have been very busy!

We started our week planning for our Big Write as we thought about what happened during Sports Day. We have finished our Big Write today by writing our recounts. Meanwhile, in Maths we have practised telling the time using o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. The rest of our week has been filled with lots of lovely extra-curricular activities!

We absolutely LOVED our visit to Paxton Pits Nature Reserve where we got to explore living things and their habitats in so many different ways. We went pond dipping to find living things in ponds, then used our knowledge to build our own. We built otter holts using different logs, sticks and twigs and enjoyed a walk to a bird hide to see if we could spot some cormorants. We made beautiful crowns using plants and rocks that we found in a special location where the rangers had given us permission to pick our favourite plants. We even got to go on a minibeast hunt by looking under rocks, logs and... cotton rugs! Some children even found newts! We would like to say a huge thank you to our parent helpers for coming with us and sharing our adventures with us throughout the day.

Yesterday, we loved our move up morning, where we got to spend some more time with our new teachers - Mrs Latham and Mrs Nutland. We started by sharing some of our favourite things until we got to discover real artefacts in rocks after break!

The rest of our afternoons this week have focused on our Community Challenge. We have researched and created informative posters about why plants are so important and what their benefits will be in our classrooms. We shared our new found knowledge in assembly and gave each class an aloe vera plant to take care of. Many thanks to the BSA for providing them.

We have paused our Zippy's Friends lessons this week due to lots of changes to our timetable, but we look forward to continuing to solve problems next week.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We had such a fantastic time at Paxton Pits Nature Reserve.

What we have been learning this week...

This week has been our assessment week. We have worked really hard with Reading 1, Reading 2, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar, Arithmetic and Maths Reasoning test papers - whew! The children have really impressed me with their focus and dedication to trying their best with their learning.

In our afternoons, we have found out that cress grows best with water and sunlight but cannot survive without any water at all. Even the cress in the dark cupboard grew a little with water, even if it was unhealthy! We also worked on our class community challenge by finding out why plants are so good for us. We can't wait to share the information on posters next week. In PSHE we continued to talk about human life cycles and thought about what we would be able to do at different stages of our lives. We loved making clocks using split pins, ahead of our Maths lessons on time next week.

To end the week, we spent some time watching puppet shows created by Year 5 about Picot - a very bad person from Cambridge. We found out he was a Norman landowner and called himself the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. He was described as lots of different animals, including a hungry lion and cunning fox! With the help of our Year 5 friends, we then created our own animal finger puppets and used them to imagine new stories.

In Zippy's Friends, we have continued our unit about how to solve problems. We thought about what bullying was and what we can do. We discussed that everyone has a right not to be bullied and that if we see someone being bullied we should do something about it. Next, we thought about what solutions we could use. Finally, we thought about how the bully might be feeling and what we could do to prevent ourselves from becoming bullies by sharing our feelings and asking for help if something is bothering us, rather than being unkind to someone else to make us feel better.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We loved seeing the Year 5 puppet shows!

What we have been learning this week...

In our English lessons this week we have planned and written our own versions of The Friendship Bench. First, we looked at the five major plot points of the story and added our own twists. We drew a picture to remind us what decisions we made about the story. Then, we wrote small chunks about each plot point, making sure that we included capital letters and full stops in every sentence. We have also done lots of reading practise this week by reading small chunks of text and answering questions about them. In our spelling lessons, we have focused on swapping the y for i and adding -es to different words.

In Maths, we have noticed that one half is equal to two quarters . We have also recognised three quarters of shapes and found three quarters of quantities. We needed to find one quarter first by sharing the whole amount into four equal groups, then counted three of the groups to find three quarters.

In Science, we started our cress experiment to find out what plants need to grow. We remembered that all plants need water, air, light and the correct temperature. We've put one pot in sunlight with water, another in sunlight without water, one in the dark with water and one in the dark without water. We loved the Circus workshop on Tuesday, where we got practise juggling, plate spinning and the flower sticks. Thank you so much to the BSA for organising this fantastic event.

We also had so much fun on Sports Day! We were fantastic at throwing javelins, sprinting and hurdles. Thank you so much to Mr French for organising a great morning!

In Zippy's Friends, we have started our unit about how to solve problems. We thought about what steps we needed to follow to think of a solution. We created posters to remind us what we need to do.

  • Calm down. Take deep breaths.

  • Notice how we are feeling and think about the problem.

  • Think about ALL the solutions (even the bad ones!)

  • Choose the best solution for the problem.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We loved our circus workshop! Look at our skills!

What we have been learning this week...

Our English lessons this week have continued to focus on writing a story. We have carried on our stories throughout the week. We started by thinking about how it feels to be lonely and collected adjectives to describe different feelings. Next, we wrote a section of our story using verbs to describe different playtime activities. We also wrote a section using speech to imagine what a character would say. Today, we worked in a team to collect different vocabulary, ready for our work next week. In our spelling lessons, we revisited adding the suffixes s/-es and -ing to our /w/ sound words.

In Maths, we have recognised thirds of shapes and quantities. We also found out what unit and non-unit fractions were. We know that unit fractions are one equal part out of the whole, whilst non-unit fractions are more than one equal part out of the whole. We practised writing different fractions, ensuring our numerators and denominators were correct.

In History this week, we found out who Rosa Parks was and why she was so inspiring. We discussed how important it is for everyone to be treated equally and thought it was unfair that sometimes people are treated differently because of how they look. In Science, we planned an experiment so we can prove that plants need water and light to grow. In RE, we found out that the Torah is a scroll which Jewish people read and celebrate at Simchat Torah.

In Zippy's Friends, we have continue our unit focusing on friendship. We thought especially about conflict resolution and what we can do when we fall out with a friend. Some of our ideas were fantastic, as we thought we could make them a card, ask them to play, say sorry, talk about it, offer them a handshake or do a nice thing for them.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We loved working in different teams to build the tallest tower with paper and tape!

What we have been learning this week...

Our English lessons this week have focused on writing a story. We have been inspired by The Friendship Bench by Wendy Wetlock. We started by predicting what the story might be about and asked questions about the text. Next, we wrote the first section of our story by using expanded noun phrases to describe the view of the sea. We used excellent adjectives like crashing waves and shimmering blue sea. Then, we wrote the second section of our story, focusing on the actions of our characters and describing how it might feel to start a new school. In our spelling lessons, we have learned about how the /w/ sound changes the spelling of the /or/ sound.

In Maths, we have started our Fractions unit. We thought about splitting shapes and quantities into equal parts. We then moved on to recognising a half and finding a half of quantities. We remembered to write half with 1 as the numerator and 2 as the denominator by thinking about ONE equal part OUT OF TWO equals parts (1/2). Next, we recognised one quarter and found a quarter of quantities by sharing between four equal groups. We noticed that we can HALF, then HALF again to find a quarter.

Our wider curriculum this week has focused on Art, as we finished our landscapes ready for the Art Exhibition. Thank you so much for everyone who came to support us with this event. It was wonderful to see the progression of children's work throughout the school.

In Zippy's Friends, we have started our unit focusing on friendship. We have thought about what makes a good friend and how to keep them. We might play with them, comfort them, make them laugh or be kind to them. We thought that a good friend wouldn't hurt us, say unkind words or upset us on purpose. We also thought about how sometimes we can feel lonely or rejected. We thought about some strategies we can use when we feel this way, like asking another friend to play, making a new friend or telling someone how we feel.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We used our observational skills to create pictures of our school landscape.
