What we have been learning this week...

We've had a festive week this week, with lots of Christmas play practice, Christmas crafts and Christmas preparations. In our writing lessons, we have identified features of a diary entry, used time words to say when events happened and begun to write in the first person. We will apply our new skills in a diary entry about the book 'Traction Man', by imagining we are Traction Man and considering how he feels on his adventures. We have reviewed igh and oa in Phonics.

In our Maths lessons, we have subtracted two-digit numbers. We focused on subtracting the ones first, then the tens. Some questions even required us to make an exchange from a ten, so that we had enough ones to subtract. We used base 10 to help us spot when we needed to exchange, so that we could see the numbers.

On Tuesday, we loved creating our Christmas crafts. We used felt and sequins to make our decorations and used collaging techniques to make our calendars. In our Computing lesson, we continued to code and debug simple stories. We managed to include a 'collision detection' button, as well as a timer to show a magician making a rabbit disappear. We created a super-hero to help us grow our brains in PSHE and loved sharing our work with you on Wednesday.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have enjoyed our Christmas Play practise - not long to go! Tickets have been sent home in a brown envelope with your child's name on. We can't wait!

How you can help...

We want to continue to support the children in sustaining their attention for longer periods of time. A fun way you can practise this at home is by playing board games with your child to encourage cooperation, remembering instructions, and planning ahead.

Many of the children are also working on writing their numbers correctly; if you spot your child writing letters incorrectly at home, please support them to notice and edit their own mistakes.

Please continue to practise number bonds at home, so that the children can immediately recall each pair. You could play snap, number bonds tennis (one person says one number, the other says its pair) or have a go at this fun game!

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have practised our handwriting focusing on the letters c, a and o . We have also begun our new class story 'The Nothing to See Here Hotel' - we have loved hearing about the Grandma who is a troll! We have answered comprehension questions about the story and have practised our segmenting, blending and sentence skills. We have also reviewed some of our phoneme groups this week, including ai and ee.

In our Maths lessons, we have been adding two-digit numbers. We started by adding tens to two-digit numbers, then added tens and ones and practised exchanging ten ones for one ten before trying more complex addition equations such as 35 + 47 = ?

During our afternoons, we have found out what happened after the Great Fire of London, explored what advent is and thought about how to be resilient in PSHE. We were so lucky this week as a visitor came to show us how we can use Clips on the iPads to create fun, factual videos. We were keen to show off our knowledge of the Great Fire of London. Of course, we have also done lots of Christmas play practise, impressing Miss Grist and Mr Lennon with our amazing singing!

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have enjoyed our Computing workshop, where we created fun, factual videos about the Great Fire of London.

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have focused on writing shape poems. We began by investigating rhyme schemes and matching words which matched. We moved on to reading shape poems and seeing if we could guess what they about. We even had a go at writing our own poems about a shark - we were so proud that we read them out to the class! We have also planned and written our own shape poems about the weather.

In Maths, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction. This week we have added one-digit numbers to two-digit numbers, subtracted from 10, subtracted across 10 and even subtracted from two-digit numbers.

In our afternoons this week, we have sequenced events from the Great Fire of London, started writing algorithms in Computing and found out how animals grow in Science.

What we have been learning this week...

Welcome back after a restful half term. I have been impressed this week by how quickly the children have settled back into our usual routines and how well they have worked on their learning. We have begun a new writing unit this week, focusing on writing poetry inspired by Bonfire Night. So far, we have read the poem, thought about what it would be like to experience firework night and have written our first and second verse of the poem. We have focused lots on choosing a variety of verbs to include using the -ing suffix. In our Phonics lessons, we are continuing to review Phase 5 and throughout this term we will be revising all the sounds we have learned already.

In Maths, we have continued our work on addition and subtraction – looking closely at patterns which help us with our number bonds to 100. We really enjoyed being active to practise this essential knowledge.

Our afternoons this week have focused on Design and Technology. We have all really enjoyed exploring wheels, before using our knowledge to design and make pull-along toys for pre-school children. We have even used technical terms such as wheel, axle and chassis to label the parts of our toys.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have enjoyed lots of active learning this week.

In English, we created our own fireworks displays using well-chosen verbs.

In Maths, we practised our number bonds to 100 through different games.

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have finished our stories about Little Red Riding Hood, including what happened to Grandma and how the woodcutter saved the day. Lots of the children enjoyed writing about putting Grandma in the washing machine, hiding her in a cupboard or throwing her up a tree! Poor Grandma! We are continuing to work on writing on the lines, using capital letters and full stops in every sentence. In our Phonics lessons, we have reviewed our learning by practising all our speedy sounds and finding all the different graphemes for /or/ - we counted nine different ways to write the same sound!

In Maths, we have begun our addition and subtraction unit. We have started by remembering all our number bonds to 10 and noticed that we can add in any order and still get the same answer. We moved on to writing fact families for our number bonds to 20, considering how we can use addition and subtraction to talk about the same number facts. We used what we had discovered to begin to add to 100, using the same number bonds patterns as adding to 10.

In our Science lesson this week, we found out which materials were waterproof and wrote conclusions about what we observed, while in Computing we practised sending and receiving emails, whilst thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe online. We discussed why Jews celebrate Yom Kippur and why it is an important part of the Jewish calendar, as it gives them a chance to say sorry and repent.

We look forward to a restful half term, before the exciting lead up to Christmas!

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We enjoyed finding out which materials were waterproof – ask us which material would be best to make an umbrella!

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have written about the wolf. We have asked him questions about himself, described his fur, claws and tail using adjectives and chosen verbs to talk about his actions. We are beginning to check our own sentences, using our ingredients jars to make sure we have included everything we need. In our Phonics lessons, we have focused on the /sh/ phoneme which is written using the following graphemes - ti, ssi, si and ci.

In Maths, we have been practising lots of counting. We have remembered counting in 2s, 5s and 10s before comparing the patterns we could spot in each times table. We have also begun to count in 3s, ready for looking at thirds later on in the year.

In Science this week, we have made predictions about what material will make the best umbrella, by deciding whether they will be waterproof or not. Our geography lesson this week focused on what it is like to live in hot and cold places in the world, as we sorted different statements into categories. We have also enjoyed creating sunflower collages inspired by Van Gogh in Art.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have used ‘paint the squares’ on Topmarks to spot patterns in our 2s, 5s and 10s - ask us what we can remember!

What we have been learning this week...

This week, we have continued to work on place value during Maths lessons by partitioning numbers to 100 into tens and ones. We have enjoyed lots of practical activities using counters to explore how numbers up to 100 are made of tens and ones. We have started our Phonics this work, using our new Little Wandle scheme; finding alternative graphemes which make the /ai/ sound, including eigh (eight), aigh (straight), ey (grey) and ea (break). We have also learned about more graphemes which make the /n/ sound, including gn (gnaw) and kn (know). In English lessons, we have read a setting description of the ocean and drawn a picture inspired by the description. We explored outside and collect ideas for things that we would see in a forest, in preparation for story writing next week.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

The children have really enjoyed starting their designs for animal collages this week. (If you have any spare newspapers at home – please could you send them in, in preparation for our lesson next week).

How you can help...

This year, we are implementing a new phonics scheme called Little Wandle. This will replace Storytime Phonics which we have used previously. All parents are welcome to an information evening about this on Thursday 28th September at 6pm.

We will be working on Place Value in Maths over the next couple of weeks, so lots of number bonds practise would be fantastic.

What we have been learning this week...

What another busy week! This week, we have been focusing on writing super sentences in English lessons, as we work on a character description about a famous fairy tale character – see if you can work out who it is…

‘She has gold hair. She runs through the woods. She is cheeky.’

‘She has blond hair. She has green eyes. She has a blue dress.’

‘She has pink cheeks. She is rude. She has pink shoes.’

In Maths, we have started our unit on Place Value focusing on recognising tens and ones as we write numbers to 100.

We have also continued to work on our learning routines, thinking about what active listening looks like and why it is important.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

We have used our knowledge of continents to label maps of the world – I was very impressed when the children sang me a song they had learned which reminded them of all the continents. In our Computing lesson, we discussed why it is important not to ‘click, click, click’ without checking with an adult and lots of children could tell me who they could ask for help when they are online. In RE, we enjoyed a story all about the Ziz and how he found out what was the hardest word to say. Our Science lesson allowed us to think about properties of materials, as we explored what different objects were made from and what their properties were.

How you can help...

This year, we are implementing a new phonics scheme called Little Wandle. This will replace Storytime Phonics, which we have used previously. All parents are welcome to an information evening about this on Thursday 28th September at 6pm.

Today, your child should have brought home their first homework sheet focusing on work with a hundred square and six spellings to practise. Please let me know if you cannot find it - I will make sure they get another one. This will be due on (or before) Wednesday.

OUR AWARD WINNERS THIS WEEK

Congratulations to our 'Manners Award' winner of the week!

Luna - Luna shows good manners, as she makes sure to ask for permission before taking something that somebody else is using.

Congratulations to our 'Positive Learning Behaviour Award' winner of the week!

Alexander – Alexander is always one of the first children to stop and listen when I ask, making sure his eyes are on me and his hands are still.

What we will be learning next week...

Next week, we will be continuing to work on our super sentences, as well as building on our place values understanding in Maths. In Science, we will be identifying good uses for every day materials and in PSHE, we will be thinking about why everyone has a right to learn.

8th September 2023

Hazel Class - Year 2

Date: 8th September 2023

What we have been learning this week...

We have had a fantastic start to Year 2 this week. The children have impressed me with their curiosity and enthusiasm. This week, we have focused lots on our learning routines and expectations, as well as getting to know each other. In our Maths lessons, we were using our growth mindset to solve problems, whilst in English we have been thinking about what we need to include in a sentence. We have enjoyed lots of time in the afternoons focusing on what good learning looks like, as well as starting our Art and PSHE lessons.

Activities we have enjoyed this week...

In Maths, we have combined numbers in different ways to make the same total by counting feet in an animal parade and we have compared numbers by playing a game to make 25. In English, we have written some super sentences to describe ourselves and have checked that we included everything we needed. We’ve even made a time capsule, so we can remember what we were like at the start of Year 2; I wonder how much we will change this year. Finally, we have ended the week with an exciting art lesson exploring how we can use paper to make different textures as we start our unit on Collages. Phew! I’m sure we will all sleep well over the weekend, ready to start again with another fantastic week on Monday!

How you can help...

This year, we are implementing a new phonics scheme called Little Wandle. This will replace Storytime Phonics, which we have used previously. All parents are welcome to an information evening about this on Thursday 28th September at 6pm.

OUR AWARD WINNERS THIS WEEK

Elliot – Elliot has shown super active listening in class this week, always making sure that he is ready to learn.

Miles – Miles has shown excellent manners this week, by saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ throughout the day.

What we will be learning next week...

Next week, we will be starting our foundation subjects. We will be finding out about the 7 continents in Geography, learning about internet safety in Computing and beginning to understand ‘believing' in RE. In our Maths lessons, we will be learning about Place Value, using ones, tens and hundreds, whilst in English we work on our sentence construction, inspired by the text, 'Agents of the Wild: Operation Honey-Hunt' by Jennifer Bell.
