Challenge 5 – A Simple Task!

Inside the surprisingly dark world of Rube Goldberg machines | The ...

Rube Goldberg machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, is a machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way. They usually involve creating chain reactions using lots of everyday items from around the house! Click on the image above to see a Rube Goldberg inspired machine in action!

This week, we challenge you to create a Goldberg machine of your own! Use things you can find to create an over-complicated system to complete a task or to get an object to travel from one destination to another! Send entries to: hculley@bourn.cambs.sch.uk

Here is a Rube Goldberg machine to staple a piece of paper! It took 10 times to complete it but he did it! “It was a lot of fun!” What excellent design skills and determination!

Here is a sequence of action by tying thread to a Nerf gun, then putting the thread under 3 bottles. He shot the first bottle and the bottles fell one after another! Very thoughtful and well-designed!

Here’s a video of another Goldberg machine to feed the dog her treats! Fantastic work!

Here is a ‘bowling chain-reaction gizmo’. I think this deserved to score a strike! Excellent work!
